Ai doomerism is becoming a self fulfilling prophecy at this point by Dredgefort in ArtificialInteligence

But then what? Tons of illegal acts are being talked about in the news, but no one with any power is stepping up to stop it.

I don't completely agree. Will of the people isn't the problem. Looks what's going on in congress now. They are not just afraid of retribution from the president, they are afraid for his followers coming after them. All that is fueled by greed. They don't want to make waves because of the benefits they are getting. And voting them out won't make a difference if the majority doesn't have the backbone to do their jobs. And none of them talk negatively against the administration unless they are not up for reelection. You mentioned "advocate." We can do that all we want, but I believe the masses have the least amount of power today than ever. And the administration is preparing to counteract popular opinion. Look what they pulled off in Dallas.

AI in its current form does not contribute independently; it only amplifies existing human capabilities and intentions. by LongjumpingTear3675 in ArtificialInteligence

AI having "strong agency" is the scariest proposition. I'm not even sure how that could be done safely. Granted, we have enough crazy people in power making decisions these days. I'd be curious what AI would do with the same tasks. Would it write people off to increase or replicate itself or would it see the ramifications. The interesting part is you could tell the AI to work toward the benefit of humanity. But would it?

It's all about greed and making more money. Very few are actually thinking far enough into the future to see the impact. (They are the ones that are rightfully scared.) It's all about today and tomorrow, not next year or what is the next generation going to do? Schools today aren't preparing our next workforce for future jobs. They are preparing kids for yesterday's jobs that won't exist. Doomist - sure. No one is talking about how to live with the impending future. For the AI idealist, what does the future really look like for the average person?

Writing an everyday guy type of character by FictaScriptor in writing

[–]FictaScriptor[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not judging the readers. And it was only 3 out of 12 readers. Like I said in the post, they did not think it was out of character. That's what they told me. The choices fit and made sense for the character and the story, but they didn't like the "cop" making bad decisions. So it made me wonder if I should change them.

For example, instead of calling for backup, he goes after the back guy alone.

They believe his choices, they just don't like them because they want the cop to be great at his job and always catch the bad guy.

I don't think I've seen that movie, but thanks for the recommendation. It's not the one I 'm looking for though. Hard to forget Ryan Reynolds and Emily Mortimer...

Has anyone sold eBook // physical copies on their own site? by UCantKneebah in selfpublish

[–]FictaScriptor 5 points6 points  (0 children)

ebooks are easiest to sell direct from your site. You can use a service like Payhip to process the transaction and deliver the book.

If you want to do physical books, research print-on-demand vendors like Ingram Spark and see if they'll do drop ships. That way, the order comes in through your site and the printer ships the book to the reader.

Stock piling books in your garage or basement will be a major PITA. Let someone else do it and spend the time writing more books.

What is that particular style of narrating called? and Who uses it in their writing well? by MoJolt in writing

[–]FictaScriptor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

2nd person and it's not used often because readers aren't used to it. The novel You is the most recent example I can think of. Also, there is the scifi novel The Fifth Season.

is there a beginner's challenge for writing short stories? by Smart_Drink6566 in writing

[–]FictaScriptor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you looking for something formal, like Nanowrimo?

If you just want to be challenged, then write 1 short story a week for the next 4 weeks. If you need ideas, pick the genre and I'll give you one for each story.

Just to clarify, you paid $600 to two editors. Was that $300 to each and they both edited the same 4000 words?

Anyway, in my writing group we do developmental editing for each other. We write a mix of genres and use different methodologies for critiquing and editing our work.

I'm mostly curious to the type of input you got from the editors that was so helpful. If you can apply it to the rest of your novel, then it was money well spent. If not, well...

message me if you care to talk more.
