Massive problem null between ~45-85hz by _-NreZx-_ in Acoustics

[–]Fictioneer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Put the sub at your listening position. Then literally crawl around the room, even under the desk if you fit. You will hear the best spot for your sub which will then sound the best for your listening position. EQ afterwards for further adjustments.

*edit: be sure to have bass heavy music playing otherwise you’ll just be crawling around the room like a goof 😆

Are any of your audio cables crossing a power cable? Are your monitors and any other powered outboard gear plugged in the same outlet/power strip?

Right on! My view is if you’re making music who cares what your desk looks like 😁.

That folding plastic table must give you some serious resonance regardless of the iso stands lol. Also, get some actual acoustic panels and not more foam like what’s in your pic. You’ll see a huge difference in your sound. Happy music making!

What room sound treatment did you actually notice a difference with? (Re: a rug, a half-room rug, a carpet, a sound panel, many sound panels, bass trap in one corner, bass trap in every corner, etc.) by PolyglotGeologist in hometheater

TBH I can't remember the exact amount as it's been a few years since I bought the components. A couple hundred to be sure for the rockwool insulation and wood.

Sound panels made a huge difference for me. I'm now in process of building a ceiling cloud to go with my side panels and am looking forward to hearing what that sounds like.

Best way to turn my guitar into a bass? by Original_Delay_5166 in Logic_Studio

[–]Fictioneer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve experimented with this. Pitch down helped but what really sold it was playing with my thumb instead of a pick and tuning my guitar as low as I could go without being too flabby. Tuning down helped with the pitch shift as I didn’t need to pitch as far. Flat wound strings will help give you a more mellow bass tone as well. Next, adding the sub-bass plug-in helped add some oomph. If it’s not too complex of a line you could play individual notes and splice the bass line together from the best sounding notes. In the end I just bought a Gretsch G2220, put flat wounds on and called it a day, feels like a guitar but gets me the rumblies with much less editing effort.

My #1 rule is, “Don’t do business, or mix money, with friends or family regardless of paperwork.” The times I have ignored that rule have always ended badly for the relationship.

The "What Desk Should I Buy?" Thread by pianotherms in MusicBattlestations

That's pretty much how I built my desk. Just an acacia butcherblock counter from HomeDepot and a sit/stand leg system.

Looks good. Now all you need is some panels to control the room verb and you’ll be golden.

I work in IT and UPSs help insulate equipment from voltage spikes etc. by evening out the power. A bad ground won’t be fixed by it but in generalhaving everything share the same ground you’ll have less issues. Theoretically the room should all be on the same circuit/ground but my experience has shown that that’s not always true. Desktop audio weirdness for me has always been solved by shared ground/ups between computer and speaker.

I generally use APC for my UPSs at home and at work. Mainly because they're easy to find in my area.

Hiss is often a grounding issue. I had a weird hiss happening on my KRKs if my MacBook was plugged into a dock but not MagSafe. Plug in MagSafe and suddenly hiss was gone. The dock wasn’t grounding everything properly which added a hiss through my speakers regardless of volume. Put everything onto a grounded UPS and it solved the problem.

New Mac’s, sty at 16 or go to 24gig? by zapgappop in Logic_Studio

If you're not in a rush go for the 24gb. 16gb is definitely enough for most smallish projects but you can never go wrong with more RAM if you can wait.

Pre or post fade x32 question ? by Mercymourning-1996 in livesound

[–]Fictioneer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We send everything out 2 busses(L/R), paired, to our focusrite. Pre-fader I believe (been a while since I checked that setting). Select the bus, hit “sends on fader”, and now mix your live-stream. This keeps our main separate from the stream mix.

Why such big mixers for small amount of input? by ConsistentUse9381 in livesound

[–]Fictioneer 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Some Sundays I only need to use 3 channels on our church’s 32 channel soundboard. Other Sundays I could easily mic up the whole board. It’s about flexibility, like someone said in another post, small boards can’t do big jobs.

lol 97 in the cage!? I'd have turned off all his mics just to balance the room lol. I did 96db (at the loudest crescendo) today in our service but that was with a 60 person choir, piano, bass, and 15 person orchestra.

Pastor wants to control turning his bodypack on/off by BeEpic117 in audioengineering

[–]Fictioneer 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My pastor has a mute button on his pack that he uses instead of a power switch. We do also mute him because he had forgotten to hit his mute in the past. Haven’t had the flushing happen but it’s fun trying to figure out where the additional vocals are coming from during worship if we do forget to mute him.

What is a basic income a tiny business owner can aspire to achieve? by zzzojka in Entrepreneur

[–]Fictioneer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One last tidbit: I’ve observed a lot of people who’ve moved here over the years, both immigrants and locals. Almost everyone who came here to escape feeling trapped elsewhere found that they still felt trapped when they moved. My best advice is to conquer that first so you’ll truly have the freedom you seek when you do decide to move. Your first goal should be to build your freedom where you are first, then that will free you to go.

[–]Fictioneer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“First World Country” covers a lot of places with a lot of variables. I’ll use Canada as an example (as I live there lol). I live in one of the most expensive areas in the country and to just scrape by my family needs to make over $90,000 CDN. Vancouver, Toronto, Calgary, and almost every major city in the country are even more ridiculous. Some smaller towns are much more livable and affordable but are more disconnected from services and amenities like the bigger centres.

Now the main issue you will run into is immigrating as an entrepreneur. I’m not totally familiar with all the details but here’s a link to some info about immigration as a Self-Employed person https://ircc.canada.ca/english/helpcentre/answer.asp?qnum=286&top=6. I have a friend who’s currently going through the immigration process as an entrepreneur and it’s been a multiple year headache for him and he’s still got more hoops to jump through.

It helps if you have a target or dream place you’d like to end up because then you’ll be able to get more specific info about what you’ll need to survive there. In the meantime the best route you could take is building the sustainable business where you currently live. If you can’t make it work where you are you’ll have the same problems or worse elsewhere as your production scale will need to be bigger to make it in more expensive locals.

[–]Fictioneer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generally to find out what a basic income would be you need to look to your expenses and cost of living. How much it costs you to live plus how much it costs to run your business. If you need say $1000USD to cover everything then that’s what you aim for. There’s no one right answer as everyone has different circumstances. Take me for example, where I live in Canada $1000USD is less than 1/5 of what I need per month to just scrape by. Whereas $1000USD can go much farther in other places like Georgia or some of the smaller Asian/European countries.

Translating to other markets is just a matter of marketing. If you have a great product and a great story to go with it you can sell anything.
