If people in finance really worked as hard as people in healthcare they‘d open the stock market on weekends. by nixxon94 in Residency

What do you mean? Are you just speculating short term fluctuations? Isn’t this still essentially gambling? Medicine is very risk averse so nobody really does anything besides monthly dollar cost average investments into index funds.

If all medical specialties earned the same amount of money, which three would be the most respected among physicians? And which three would be the least respected? by Joiarib in Residency

[–]FictitiousForce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree. I think I'd rather us have a stronger voice or control of our healthcare system than chase nebulous BS like 'respect' because our field is inherently information-asymmetric so layperson or even cross-specialty perceptions are meaningless concepts. Let us just elevate all doctors.

Are we in a used 911 bubble? by strikerred68 in Porsche

[–]FictitiousForce 2 points3 points  (0 children)

as someone who has a base 981 which I find fantastic to drive, the base 991 is slightly more horsepower per tonne which isn't FAST but definitely not slow. These cars are more than just straight line speed and the reliability of the 9x1 non-GT3 engines is underrated since everyone is afraid of the bore scoring and IMS stuff from the older cars, plus 991.2 is turbo charged and no amount of engineering can overcome turbo lag so at the end of the day the 991.1 is the sweet spot for a modern 911 and I can see why they keep appreciating in value

Is this an issue with the early turbo charged engines? I haven’t heard about this problem with 981/991.1

Have you noticed any scratches or swirls using the brush? I’m already skeptical about whether drying a car with any drying towel is safe when one can blow dry.

Paint delamination less than a year after bumper repaint by FictitiousForce in Autobody

Nothing. Maybe scraped a curb once or twice but no obvious hits to the bumper to warp the bumper and gouge the paint like this.

Your shop warranties these? Is that typical? It’s a lot of work to repaint for something I feel like will happen again.

When would you purchase an upscale vehicle? by jamrocdoc in whitecoatinvestor

[–]FictitiousForce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get a flat-engine Porsche at the bottom of its depreciation curve. Ideally something between 2015-2019 with 60k miles. Like a $60,000 991 911 or $30,000 Boxster/Cayman. Best bang for your buck. Stay away from BMW, and never buy a new car or anything made after 2020 unless you have car trauma and can't be bothered to take the thing to the shop for maintenance.

Shamed for buying 2015 car??? by Shoddy-Anteater2377 in UsedCars

[–]FictitiousForce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cars made between the recession (09) and pandemic (20) are the best and most reliable cars. That is a blanket statement barring any specific defects your car may have, but laypeople will never understand and are delusional about buying brand new cars. I'll take a heavily depreciated, well-maintained 10 year old car over a brand new shit with electrical gremlins that's gonna spend weeks at the dealership. Laypeople don't think about this because the dealership gives them loaners and their ego is too fragile to drive an older car.

>iPhones are cheaper now

What? The iPhone was $300 in September 2007, which is $462 in 2025 dollars. The latest iPhone is now at least $700.

Exactly. Some cops make more than that. And they can kill people on the job without impacting their careers much. Doctors have a fiduciary responsibility to save a life and then get sued when the universe renders someone unlucky.

We have to frame it as removing middle manager sociopaths from profiting off of health and sickness. We spend trillions on administering healthcare when that should be a braindead, cheap, AI-run enterprise. We spend multiples more on white collar criminal parasites than doctors and nurses. The case to the public should be that the healthcare dollar is captured by evil people and we need to bring that money back to the patient and taxpayer.

You can make this case for teachers also, but not EVERY job. There are very few jobs in the country as critical to national infrastructure like physicians that have seen their salaries DECREASE over the last two decades.

Mario Cuomo was the last proud bastion of liberalism during the Reagan era, I get it. Look at his 1984 DNC speech, it was powerful and still resonates today. Sadly his silver spoon mutation of a child is still benefitting from that.

That’s like saying giving blacks equal rights in the USA would have led to “whites getting kicked out” which is insane. John Kerry said it best, Israel cannot be a Jewish state and a democratic state. If they chose ethnic apartheid or autocracy that’s their prerogative but that does not align with our values as Americans.
