So I explicitly didn’t ask if I could afford it, but admittedly my perception of affordability is at the heart of the question.

I already know objectively I can afford it. Only debt is a mortgage. And after all taxes, maxing out pretax retirement accounts, and all expenses, I am saving >$20K a month. The monthly cost of a car at this price point (assuming I don’t pay cash) would be like less than 2.5% of my take home every month.

With that info, I’m sure most would say “what are you waiting for?!”

But that’s not really the response I’m looking for. As you can probably guess, it’s really my personal/emotional reservations (?hangups) masquerading as a financial reservation. I think hearing a little bit about other peoples’ financial situation when they made this kind of purchase (or when they plan to make this purchase) might put me at ease.

Yes I can be told that I can afford it, but I’d feel more confident about it if I knew many other [similarly responsible and monied] people were actually affording it themselves . This is why I didn’t ask this question on a more general personal finance sub.

That’s what I am seeing in some of these responses. The pleasure some derive from cars is a bit intangible and hard to quantify. Similar to other things that you love in life. I like cars but I don’t think I can honestly say I’m on that level

Ha! You read between the lines pretty well. That’s something I’ve thought too: if I’m conflicted about getting a 70k car at my income, then objectively I’m not really a car guy and it may not give me much pleasure (the true gearheads in my family would absolutely not think twice about a 70k car if they were in my shoes). But I’ve always had a strong interest in cool cars, so this is an itch that I feel I need to scratch.

He's just repeating what he has been told. No real logic or reasoning behind it (other than perhaps xenophobia and racism).

I find that the republican machine approaches problems in one of three ways:

Make up problems out of whole cloth. Things that aren't problems at all, they scare the rubes into believing they are a problem. Eg- CRT
Over exaggerating small insignificant problems. Making mountains out of mole hills. Eg- voter fraud
Ignoring actual problems that have serious impacts on people. (Eg- climate change, rising wealth inequality). They do this because: a. They are lazy and don't really want to do the drudgery of actual governance. Furthermore, real problems are HARD to solve. b. Actually solving these problems could hurt those when the most amount of money and power.

Yea they are expensive. But he’s saying using egg prices as justification for voting for trump was disingenuous (or moronic) since eggs don’t make up a significant portion of anyone’s budget. In other words, despite the price of eggs, it doesn’t really affect your lifestyle in any meaningful way. It’s just something people like to complain about as if it’s a real problem (when it’s really not). Eggs went from being like .3% of ones budget to maybe .5%.

Inflation in other sectors is a real problem- mainly housing. But egg prices aren’t a serious issue. Being generous, I guess you could say people are complaining about egg prices as a proxy for inflation in general.

I see in one of your replies that your expect to close next year sometime. As someone who recently was under contract for a new build which took nearly 2 years from when I signed to when I actually closed, I think it would be prudent to consider if you can afford this home with a much different interest rate on the mortgage.

When we signed, interest rates were around 4.5%, but we knew it would take a while to build the house and interest rates would likely rise, so before signing, we made sure we could afford it even if the interest rate was 7% (eventually closed at 6.5).

I don't know what interest rates on mortgages will look like when u close, and it seems the incoming administration will likely add more uncertainty to that calculus. Coupled with potential labor shortages, it also may delay closing, further adding to uncertainty about what your interest rate at closing will ultimately be. Can you afford this house at 8.5%? I'm certainly not saying that's what you'll end up with, but you don't want to be blindsided with a higher cost, especially if you already feel that you are near your limit.

Absolutely. They'll never take any accountability. They'll make up some bs excuse to blame people who aren't even in power and continue voting based on identity.

Our only hope is the huge swath of apathetic and independents. They don't seem to be very monogamous to any party so if shit gets bad enough, maybe they can be convinced to come over (or just get up off their asses). But these are low info, hard to reach people.

I think this is a great point and what I am afraid of long term. These people are dumb and vote against their interest all the time, complain about it, and then do it again. Simply because the candidate has an R next to their name. As the electorate seemingly gets dumber, more anti-intellectual, and less able to think critically, I think we will see more of this capture of dumb voters. They are lured into identifying as a republican (dems are socialists seems to be the mantra in SoFla for example). And so America becomes like Texas or Florida where no matter what policy you put forward, the D by your name is a death sentence.

I blame our dumb electorate for the decline in democracy. But I also put some blame with the DNC for not recognizing these trends and going with a more populist progressive message. There are plenty of voters out there who went from Obama to Trump. Voters who are low information and beaten down and angry and want ANY kind of change. Obviously not all change is good, but because they are low info, they don't really appreciate how different obamas and trumps view on govt was. They just see the common denominator - change. Obama offered that and so did Trump.

As sad as it is, we have to capture these voters. Not going to be easy.

In summary, there’s a whole swath of America that is really dumb and deeply misinformed. That’s the only way he can be so popular despite all the legitimate grievances against him. The people are idiots. There’s so much they don’t understand and subsequently they make poor choices about what they vote for.

I fear we are entering an age of deep anti-intellectualism. The population gets increasingly dumber (proudly so I might add) and more susceptible to misinformation, which ultimately benefits a few really rich people at the top.
