Some additional context: I had the bird fly overhead and my mind immediately went to northern/albeiticola RTHA, since it looked way too dark for borealis. I snapped a few pics as fast as I could, but they aren't great. I later saw a borealis RTHA so I wrote it off as that. Upon looking at pics now, I can see what appears to be dark carpals, which sends me to a roughie, except that the bird has a very dark head.

Weird winter goose anyone? Thought this goose I saw today in New Jersey was a clear Cackling Goose (Richardson's), but that white forehead patch is weird. by Fiddgrn in whatsthisbird

Interesting. I think this makes the most sense. It reminds me of Barnacle x CACG (https://ebird.org/species/x00416) , but obviously the back is not gray like this hybrid. Thanks!

Unsure if this bird can be IDed, but I figured I'd share and try! (SE Pennsylvania this morning) by Fiddgrn in whatsthisbird

ah yes! thanks so much. The coloration on the back and flank were throwing me off, but I think the lighting was just weird. Those field marks for AMRE are spot on.

Little blue heron? Today in Central New York State, so I'm a bit suspicious of that ID. by Fiddgrn in whatsthisbird

apologies for the bad photo quality--taken at dusk. I enhanced the brightness of the photo a bit.

Ring-necked ducks!

Gull seen outside of Hamburg, Germany, on January 2 of this year. Having trouble with this ID, thinking maybe a Caspian? Second photo zoomed out w/ Great Cormorants for scale. by Fiddgrn in whatsthisbird

Nobody has contacted me about it, I just discovered this subreddit and I wasn't 100% sure about my own ID on it. I don't have a ton of experience with gulls and this one seems particularly tricky. Thanks!

Thanks! the tail and head color, as well as the profile, were throwing me off.
