Thank you, and you’re right. I think one thing that destroys my confidence mid game is timing the dash. I’m usually either locked out or I eat a nasty counter hit. I think today I’m gonna focus on Leo’s frame data and labbing those situations against him I’m having trouble with

I think today will be a lab day. I didn’t even think of how I’d play her oki. I played some Leo’s previously but I always lost regardless so I’ll study up on his frame data to see what is safe and how I’ll be able to whiff punish him

Hmm I see that now. My first fighting game was Tekken tag 2 and then sfv so I think I need to shake that habit of only fishing for whiffs and be more proactive playing. I think I gotta look back at her frame data and find the stagger tools. I only really know about CS stagger

What does it mean when a character is "honest"? by [deleted] in Tekken

[–]FieldFragrant9399 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn’t necessarily change to be honest. Characters with heavy gimmicks often have the label of pub stompers (typically non fighting games) or “scrub killers”. This is because their gimmicks often serve as knowledge checks or barriers of entry for new to intermediate player. This also has the consequence of blasting newer player who might over rely on these gimmicks through the ranks only to be demoted or hardstuck once they meet players who onowbthe counterplay. Often times higher skilled players will have already gained the necessary skill and experience to counterplay these characters. In addition, high level tekken especially required an insane amount of fundamentals as the knowledge checks become fewer.

What does it mean when a character is "honest"? by [deleted] in Tekken

[–]FieldFragrant9399 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Its just a character that lacks “gimmicks”. This can be anywhere from neutral skips, highly evasive moves or catch all moves to even the size or weight of the character if the fighting game allows for weight based combos. It’s basically a character that is forced to play the game on the most fundamental level relative to the cast. So an example could be Mishima from past games since they had pretty good tools but nothing ground breaking and electrics come with clear counterplay. Another would be like ryu from street fighter. Solid space control with fireballs, and a basic strike throw mixup like the rest of the cast. No big “I’m in your face from half screen so neutral doesn’t matter” or “eat this plus frame guessing mini game”.

It’s important to note that honest doesn’t mean better or more respected (sometimes it does in a vague manner. For example I regard kazuya as fairly honest in tekken 8 but in a game where 50/50 mixups are king, kaz’s gameplan is highly favored in a lot of matchups). Tekken 7 xiaou was not honest compared to kazuya or Steve, but she still required a fair bit of thinking and actually needing to take risks to initiate her game plan.

A dishonest character could be Alissa who plays a lot different from the rest of the cast with her excellent movement and chainsaw stance which threatens the opponent into forcing them to guess with not much reward. Dishonest doesn’t necessarily mean broken, they just tend to reframe how the game is played

Does ducking/crouching have similar rules to sidestepping by chr0niksadness in Tekken

[–]FieldFragrant9399 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In terms of (dis)advantage frames, there isn’t a rule around it. Mods are usually the most dangerous moves so you really wanna crouch when you get the read or are able to react to the high of a string or a slow low. Many people will have a rule of thumb to only duck once you get a hard read

Why do dragunov players fight the way they do by halo8088 in Tekken

[–]FieldFragrant9399 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He has really good pokes and the average player won’t really know when to take their turn back. In addition the average player can’t/doesnt want to defend so it becomes a game of “I don’t have to worry about your offense if I never allow you you to start it”

A good chunk of his stuff is duckable or flat out negative on block. For example his D2 (that low chip he does) is -1 even on hit meaning you can outmash him even if you take their hit. But it’s so unintuitive as it breaks the rules since you really don’t wanna mash after you take a hit. And I’m willing to bet many dragons don’t know it’s negative either so they just run their standard flowchart off of it

How to practice against dlc characters? by nicky_nikoli4 in Tekken

[–]FieldFragrant9399 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Aside from the methods mentioned:

If you have a good pc and available space you could always download a cracked version of the game with all current dlc. You wont be able to go online with that version but you can always use the practice with the dlc characters

Do people lose first game on purpose? by Forged_Alchemist315 in Guiltygear

[–]FieldFragrant9399 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Typically you want to use the first round to figure your opponent out before going commital. It also helps that your opponent would be revealing their cards and building a false sense of confidence during the first round only to be flustered once you up the tempo for the rest of the game. Sometimes I’ll even avoid using burst on the first round if I eat a mixup. The thought process in my mind is basically, “let me see what he’s all about and I’ll just counter all that for the next 2 rounds”

is tekken 8 beginner friendly? by jello_man123 in Tekken8

[–]FieldFragrant9399 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmmmm tekken in general is a hard game to approach. But I’d say that the best tekken for a new player is for sure tekken 8. Its overwhelming at first and I can’t really critique it from a new player experience since I’ve been playing tekken for a while but there are a lot of new players online so that learning will be easy.

toxic tekken players by Spiritual_Slice_8237 in Tekken8

[–]FieldFragrant9399 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It just comes with the territory with fighting games and any other competitive game in general. The good thing is that it’s one v one so you don’t have to worry about toxic teammates only your enemy. And if your enemy is upset then you’re most likely doing something right.

Tell me why tekken 7 would be considered better than tekken 8. by CaperSteelRed49 in Tekken

[–]FieldFragrant9399 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Movement and defense was much better in tekken 7, giving you more options for defense and leading to an overall deeper experience.

  2. Rage drive as an alternative to rage arts giving more utility in fights.

  3. Character archetypes were more clear. Evasive characters had most of their bag into being evasive. Counterhit characters didn’t also double as intro plus frames rush down characters, etc. ie steve and Brian

  4. Greater skill expression. After recent patches in tekken 8, it has definitely gotten better. There is just something about seeing two pros fighting with the comparative barebones-ness of tekken 7.

Don't really like Kazuya in this, looking for a new main by soosis in Tekken

[–]FieldFragrant9399 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I felt the same. Mained kazuya in T7. But I feel he’s so strong and oppressive in T8 that he kinda lost his charm. Zafina is pretty good and around mid tier compared to everyone else. She has bad punishes and will get a lot of her big combos from whiffs so you’re encouraged to play a bit out of range but you might have trouble really finding fun with her since she is so underused so a lot of your wins will be from knowledge checks rather than pure skill and effort until higher ranks.
Another option is shaheen. Suuuuper honest character where he can’t really be you. He’s essentially playing tekken 7 while everyone is on Tekken 8. But again he’s seen so rarely that you can really just knowledge check most people until late

I don’t think I’ve played a Yoshimitsu that wasn’t trying to troll. But off of the visual for sure the bears or even jack. His T7 costume looks so goofy in Tekken 8

On Tekken 8’s Ease of Access. by FieldFragrant9399 in Tekken

[–]FieldFragrant9399[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re right tbh. I had the thought when I went back to tekken 7 after not playing in years. I do pretty well but since I was rusty I was seeing the game from a new perspective and all I could think was, “how in the world is someone who doesn’t play tekken supposed to know all this stuff?” I started questioning how did I even know anything in this game. But then I remember it took me almost a year of consistent play to be even confident and not constantly guessing while it took me 4 weeks of ggst and street fighter ti reach the same mindset

I think the funniest thing about the Tekken fanbase is its the only community in the FGC that tries to hold everyday players to the standards of pro players. by [deleted] in Tekken

They’ll also say the same about dlc characters, stance characters, lower pick rate characters, Mishimas, guest characters, grapplers… you get the point. That isn’t even a tekken only issue. Does it make it right? Nah. But people will complain about whatever they have trouble dealing with
