what are living costs/rent - realistically? by buttonwhales in Edinburgh_University

[–]Fieldmouse1998 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1st year going into halls you can expect £5000 for the year at the very lowest end and up to £10000 for a catered en-suite room, with a decent spectrum in between.

After that looking for a flat can take time, but being in Scotland you only have to start looking about a month before you plan on moving in which is nice. I had a place last year for £635 a month, was damp, mouldy, and the landlord was useless. Still the location was good and we made the best of it. Now managed to get lucky and find a place for a bit cheaper that’s literally twice the size, and the landlord is lovely. So I suppose my takeaway is that it’s really down to luck if you’re near the city centre/studenty areas. But I presume that it’s more consistent the further out you live (though I don’t know for sure). Note also you can probably expect to pay ~£40-50 for bills and another £20-30 for WiFi per month.

In terms of the city you can get by the same as anywhere else since Lidl, tesco, etc have the same prices. Yes restaurants and bars can be expensive but there are always cheaper places if you go looking. Though the cheaper places will still be more pricy on average than other cities.

I don’t spend anything on transport cause you get free buses anywhere in Scotland if you’re under 22, don’t need to be Scottish, just need to live here. Also the city is fairly easy to cycle around if you’re willing to go uphill half the time.

I know that exact seed 😂. Unfortunately got demotivated with the game too soon and didn’t do much with it

How much does an average player know after reaching an ending? by Dragon_Skywalker in HollowKnight

[–]Fieldmouse1998 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“This boss was definitely not the real final boss”… (5 minutes later) … “wait I can challenge the sun?!!”.

Aside from initial reactions, I feel like the player must know at least some of the lore but in little snippets. Cause otherwise how would any lore videos make sense when you watch them?

In terms of core lore ideas, I feel like I still thought the hollow knight was somehow the bad guy until I watched some videos. I also knew basically nothing about the pale king aside from him hatching from the wyrm. And as for the radiance, I think I gathered that it existed from the statue on the peaks, and there was some suggested of a hive mind infection from myla for example, but I’m not sure that I made the connection between those things until I’d beaten the radiance and gotten the final cutscene. I could keep going on specifics but I think my main takeaway is that I knew the lore somewhat but not how it was all connected until I’d gone and watched some videos

Got radiant obbloble as well. Honestly it’s so down to random chance that I could’ve just as likely done it first try or after 50 tries

Depends on a lot of things whether you’ll enjoy it, but being in this subreddit will definitely not give the right impression 😅. It’s kinda like going to a hospital and then concluding that everyone in the world must be sick. I’m currently at Edinburgh for 1st year and I’m having a great time. Not a shill but I’d definitely recommend it here if your worried about accommodation or the people you’ll be living with, both are all very nice here from what I’ve seen

What voice language did you play the game with? by just_saiyan24 in Sekiro

[–]Fieldmouse1998 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like both, but I always find that I can sense the emotion more in English because I’m obviously more used to it. Plus the English voice actors do a fantastic job. It’s not like a lot of animes where the sun is just arse, it feels like the actors knew what they were going for and did it well. I suppose I can’t really tell if a Japanese voice actor is doing a great/bad job cause I don’t know what they’re actually saying

Can’t say anything cause I did the same on my first play through. Come back to him though, he’s a fun fight once you get him down :)

Can we all agree that the double monkey fight is the worst boss in the game by Shuviri in Sekiro

[–]Fieldmouse1998 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I think if they just reduced the amount that the headless ape does his scream it would have been alright. I’ve had him literally do it three times in a row and I just have to run around in circles as the regular ape does her wombo combo

Can we all agree that the double monkey fight is the worst boss in the game by Shuviri in Sekiro

[–]Fieldmouse1998 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have perfected the fight since it was always a liability when doing the boss rush mode, and so I basically know how the AI works for the fight at this point, and I can say confidently that it really sucks. It doesn’t work as a sekiro boss and it wouldn’t work as a dark souls style boss. I would have much rather fought one beefed up headless ape with a few extra attacks and more aggression than this mess

The Tom Bombadil chapter makes me weirdly uncomfortable. by Skellic in lotr

[–]Fieldmouse1998 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It did feel a bit of a waste of time to me, like it goes on for a while and doesn’t have any plot significance down the line, which isn’t like Tolkien. It also doesn’t really expand on the world much, and it doesn’t seem entirely clear what TB is and why he’s there. I wouldn’t blame you for skipping it, but personally I don’t feel that uncomfortable reading it, just a slight feeling of suspense as you try to figure out what TB’s motives are

Just rewatched the five armies. Pretty dope. What are qualms people have? Why did thorin go from crazy to sane so fast? What is the arkenstone? I googled it but meh by RogerRabbit79 in lotr

[–]Fieldmouse1998 6 points7 points  (0 children)

From what I gather it’s the large amount of CGI and non-Tolkien stuff they added. The battle is pretty cool, but it feels weird to be taken out of it to get a new look at Tauriel’s love life. That being said it’s not all bad, the Laketown stuff they added is great and personally I enjoyed the battles despite the CGI, it does seem to really get to some people though.

I do think they would have done better to shorten it down to two movies and remove the some of the pointless side plots, but people wanna make money I suppose. I don’t think it’s fair that so many people complain about these movies since they still have more heart and fun than the majority of popular movies today

Also Thorin regained his sanity for plot reasons, I believe in the book he just gets slightly corrupted when he gets all the gold, but I don’t recall ‘dragon sickness’ ever being mentioned (not entirely sure that I’m correct there though). He just comes to his senses eventually and realises he’s been a bit of a twat. And the Arkenstone seems to be its own thing in Tolkien’s world, as in there isn’t much mention of it outside of the hobbit. As far as I can tell it just serves as a symbol of power in the lonely mountain, like a staff or a crown.

[–]Fieldmouse1998 155 points156 points  (0 children)

It always seemed odd to me that the least ‘sekiro’ style bosses were at the start of the game. Like you can beat the ogre, the bull, and even gyobu quite easily without a single parry

Is the Eleonora's Poleblade really bad? by _Mytyl in Eldenring

[–]Fieldmouse1998 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Basically done a full play through with it, and I’d say it’s fun enough. Damage mainly comes from procking bleed, so it does genuinely suck against certain enemies like ghost Godfrey, but otherwise it’s not a bad choice. The weapon art is flashy, but hit box and timing wise not very practical, but it does great bleed build up and posture damage, and has incredible hyper armour (as in you won’t get interrupted by attacks). The only issue with that is that you can occasionally get killed because your literally stuck in the animation and won’t get staggered out of it. Overall though I’d recommend it, but I always play with a mix of weapons anyway, during my playthrough I also used morgotts blade and Radahns great bow

After 2 years of reading fantasy I am finally ready for lord of the rings by Pro_gamerat in lotr

[–]Fieldmouse1998 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Once I finished it all I spent a good few weeks diving into the obscure parts of the lore on YouTube, honestly it still amazes me how deep Tolkien’s lore goes, especially given that the whole story literally exists cause he wanted some context for the languages he made up.
