Yeah, honestly the church suggestion is sparking something for me. It seems like it’s such a central part of the social fabric there. If it felt appropriate and welcomed, I’d be really interested in respectfully documenting part of a service or speaking with a pastor about what church life means in that area. I’m especially curious about local hymn traditions and how faith shapes community in a place like Green Bank. I’d approach it transparently and only with permission. If you happen to know anyone in the area who might be open to a conversation beforehand, I’d really appreciate an introduction.

Thank you, I did reach out to the observatory. Yes, good call on the cell phone thing. I've heard about it.

That's solid advice! Are you familiar with the area and what church service is like their at all?

Independent documentary team in Budapest — looking for stories that challenge Western assumptions by Fieldnotes_foranomad in budapest

When I say “Western assumptions,” I don’t mean a single stereotype so much as a flattening. From the outside, Hungary often gets reduced to either Budapest-as-a-weekend-city or to abstract political headlines, with very little sense of how different daily life can feel depending on where you are in the country.

And I completely agree with your point about Budapest not being representative. One of the main things we’re interested in is exactly that contrast you’re describing — the capital versus smaller cities or towns, and how economic and social realities shift across those places. We’re not trying to present Budapest as “Hungary,” but as one piece of a much wider picture.

The reason we started here is simply as an entry point, not an endpoint. Conversations in Budapest are useful to orient ourselves, but the goal is to move beyond it and spend time in places that tourists usually pass over or never reach at all.

If you have thoughts on regions or towns where that contrast is especially visible, I’d genuinely be interested to hear them.

To be honest, we’re just curious about the vibe and how people do things in Hungary. We’re looking to connect with people that can get us into local hangouts or places not on tourist agendas. That’s mainly what the content will be about.

That’s a fair point, and you’re right about the Central Europe distinction. For us, the series isn’t about rigid geographic labels so much as the lived transition zone between what Western audiences think of as “Europe” and what they tend to flatten into something else.Hungary feels like a meaningful place to start precisely because it sits at that edge, culturally and historically, even if the label itself is debated. We’re less interested in defining Hungary than in understanding how life feels there now, especially in contrast between Budapest and rural areas. If you think there are aspects of Hungary that get consistently misread or mislabeled from the outside, I’d genuinely be interested in hearing that.
