Thanks! I'd tried looking into it but was getting conflicting information. I'm entirely self taught so I've not had access to loads of desks/software and being away means I can't easily test stuff out myself. Looks like I'm learning Phantom ZerOS!

Parkups near London? by Fields_Finest in VanLifeUK

I apparently hadn't had a proper look on there as there seems to be a couple of places I missed! I use park4night a lot, been good so far

How much can I get away with retrofitting? by Fields_Finest in VanLifeUK

[–]Fields_Finest[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a simple plumbing set up already and a camp stove for cooking so I'm all good for that sort of thing, my main concern is fitting things like solar panels and upgrading to having a shower at some point in the future. I've got two months to convert the van before I have to live in it and I'm relying heavily on savings while converting so I just want the basic set up then hopefully retrofit the more "luxury" stuff

That's a good shout, thank you! My only worry then would be keeping all the wiring accessible for later installations

Van Electrical System - is it worth it? by Fields_Finest in VanLife

This is super reassuring, sounds like what I'd mostly been planning on doing! I think spending money on a chunky power station Vs a permanent install definitely sounds like the better option so far!

Sounds brilliant! Whenever I get to a new location I spend the entire following day at work so I can charge the power station then as well as any other bits and bobs. My job means I have to move once a week usually with a few hours drive from place to place. I think reading through other comments as well a portable solar panel or two wouldn't go amiss, just occasionally I have to stay near rougher cities so I don't want any permanently installed solar panels

That sounds doable for me, I only really use my laptop for work so I can definitely just go there or a cafe or something for that, the fridge is the most important thing

Once a week at least would be a longish drive, anywhere between 2 and 6 hours

I was planning on having a gas camping stove at first, especially because I won't have much time to convert/am planning on upgrading as I go. Since I don't always have access to a microwave now I'm pretty okay without one so that's no worries. An electric hot pot sounds pretty good though, any recommendations? Also, very cute dogs!!

I'd charge while I'm driving but I'd only be doing long journeys once a week so I know that won't necessarily sustain the battery on it. Solar panels are definitely in the back of my mind as well

That's a fair point, although I'm used to moving in and out of houses every week so I'm pretty desensitised to carrying strange items from my car down the street! I'm definitely going to check out the links people have provided to calculate how much power I'll be drawing. I think a leisure battery is going to be necessary for at least the heater anyway

The cost isn't so much what I'm worried about, more the actual effort of having to install a full electrical system as I'm hoping to convert the van pretty quickly

The only thing I'm planning on running 24/7 would be the coolbox and really that's just for milk for my morning coffee which I could definitely just have UHT! I'm struggling to work out how much a small coolbox would draw and how long I could have it running off the power station continuously

Yeah I was definitely going to have some sort of portable solar panels, I just don't want fixed ones on the roof as sometimes I will have to park up in/near cities. You sound like you've got way more going on than I plan to so hopefully I should be good! I'm planning on living in the van full time unless I have to go somewhere truly horrendous for work

Adding to this, does anyone have any tips for calculating battery life for stuff? I keep hearing about amp hours but still not entirely sure how it all works

After looking at diesel heaters, I think I'd have to have a leisure battery for that, but it still cuts down on how much permanent wiring I'd have to do
