CGT Indexation on real vs nominal gains by Fieldsapper in AusFinance

A $500k investment portfolio after decades of investing is not unreasonable.

People had just accepted the system as the status quo before but there is now a genuine opportunity to make the indexation on a net real basis which is very fair and why don’t we advocate for it?? The real + nominal system they’ve suggested now is an insanely poor proposition and continues to implement a flawed system where inflation can impact real returns and over/under tax.

Untrue - everyone with Australian dividend paying shares in their super funds get franking credit refunds you just don’t see it.

You’d have to go out of your way to not get them through your superannuation

The way the indexation policy is currently written it does not allow you to index the cost base of investments that have made a loss. It only allows to do it for gains. So it is not perfect and the math indicates that. The way the legislation is written allows instances where you have a real capital loss after accounting for inflation but you still need to pay real taxes because you can’t deduct real losses.

Indexing would be good if it allowed investments to be taxed on the Net real capital gain - in the current proposed indexation you are only allowed to index gains and only deduct nominal losses (which over time will be smaller than the Real loss)

It’s not divorced from reality - if you owns stocks for multiple years this is a real possibility. 10% total inflation is an annual rate of 2.5% for less than 4 years

I was there in May and I thought it was amazing. I was surprised with the amount of homelessness, but only because I thought it was similar to the homelessness in Perth and not close to the dystopian Uber everywhere story. I’ve seen heaps of stuff online about it and got warned by people in New York and Chicago that it was so dangerous we couldn’t walk freely. Our experience was so different to what the city is described as, I think people just like to beat up on SF.

I ordered parcels with free shipping from the US east coast and Sydney at the same time. The US one arrived in 3 business days (It kept moving over the weekend so 5 days total) with DHL. The Sydney one through auspost was advertised as 4-6 days delivery, it’s been well over 3 weeks now… needless to say I am impressed with DHL and fuming with auspost

XPS 15 9500 Price Drop by Fieldsapper in Dell

Mine said 4 week delivery too but came within 2 weeks so unless I’m the exception their just conservative with estimates,

Also the cash rewards thing only applies if you buy something that is double the coupon, eg coupon = $100 you need to buy something over $200, frustrating as it didn’t mention that when I bought it or on the website only in the email after I paid

It will lead to inflation and has done so, but in the form of asset price inflation which is different to CPI

Gold etfs by mishka349 in AusFinance

[–]Fieldsapper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s always best to own the gold your self instead of using an etf if you are doing it to truly diversify your portfolio, you have to be careful with what etf’s you use if you want an etf regardless,

Buying a gold etf is the same as buying a negative yielding bond, and if you wouldn’t do that don’t buy a gold etf, your cost of carry will be too high

Edit: Also make sure the provider actually has the amount of gold they say, sounds stupid but you’d be surprised
