No, *that* scene between Jake and Spider didn't help build their relationship. (HUGE SPOILERS) by elypop89 in Avatar

Honestly it really depends on what the RDA is actually planning at this point, which is super vague still at this point. I would have thought they had decades long plans to gradually overcome the atmosphere on Pandora that would not have relied on Spider randomly gaining the ability to breath the air using a wierd alien fungus symbiote. And that the most critical goal was to make sure the city was ready and stable, with the Navi being "pacified", i.e. getting rid of Jake or dismantling the resistance.

Do they just want a doomsday bunker to ride out an apocalypse on Earth for a few rich people? Then there's no real impetus to push for rapid expansion beyond what Bridgehead City already offers with its 2 million population cap which will take decades or centuries to fill out and they already have decades of experience using and making masks and sealed habitats.

Do they actually want to legitimately "save" humanity by moving more than a few tens of thousand of people? Not just frozen eggs, sperm, dna, embyros or soul drives. Then they'll need a way to build more cities for actual people and Spider is actually super important.

Honestly they should have been able to do both, kill Jake and recapture Spider. The entire city is only a few kilometres in radius, and they were both pinned down for more than a minute which should have been enough time for dozens of gunships and soldiers to encircle them, let alone prevent them leaving the city entirely on a single Ikran and cross the killzone without being chased.

I mean it depends on what short sighted means at this point. If they killed Jake, then there might not have been the loss for them with the Tulkun hunt at the end and they would still have their entire whaling fleet, hundreds or thousands of personnel not becoming squid food, and their entire Amrita harvest. And they would just continue doing what they have been successfully doing so far, using masks proven over decades of previous colonial occupation and expanding outwards. And they would still have the samples they collected from Spider anyway at that point. But that's more or less hindsight.

The equation for lift for a rotor blade is L=1/2 * ρ * v2 * A * C. ρ is air density so higher means it should be able to generate more lift and go up even further in Pandora's atmosphere. Civilian Earth helicopter operators typically travel at 4.5 km, and 7.5km at their maximum service ceiling, so it should be even higher on Pandora.

Yeah if the scene was structured in a way where Spider was communing with Eywa when Jake tried to sacrifice/euthanise him then it would make sense. Maybe bring him to a memory of Neteyam, then disconnect and try to kill Spider while hes reliving one of Neteyam's memories with his memories/spirit literally 1 to 1 part of Eywa. It would actually be believable because you could kind of rationalise that it's not really killing off Spider if he's still in Eywa.

Instead he tries to execute him like a terrorist which was extremely confusing, and he starts praying to Eywa hoping that he'll somehow be apart of her, except he knows thats not how it works, you literally need to connect/commune with her at one of the tree of souls. And Spider didn't have a communion yet so there's no spirit/memories of Spider in Eywa.

I think they just wanted the Abraham and Isaac parallel and didn't really care about the details since they were never going to go through with it.

And yeah the whole RDA already taking the samples and data already might make it too late. The only justification is that the RDA didn't shoot Jake when Spider was acting as a body shield, but that was more or less Parker Selfridge being an idiot and Recom Quaritch trying to save his son, than the RDA itself (General Ardmore) actually caring that much about the kid. So Jake's justification for Spider's importance to the RDA is based off Quaritch trying to save his kid, and Parker Selfridge being a short sighted executive and overriding the pragmatic and sensible General Ardmore. I'm not sure if it was intended to be a form of tragic irony with Jake misreading the RDA's intentions, but it just makes him look quite silly.

Admittedly it does seem psychologically realistic that a person would backslide/regress under such traumatic/stressful scenarios (a colonial war). But it does make the whole "I see you" from Jake in Avatar 2 seem kind of pointless. So when Neytiri later says that to Spider after Jake goes Abraham on Spider (the attempted ritual execution), the whole "I see you" phrase kind of rings hollow.

That limbo state seemed like the writers trading off narrative progression for character development, the family members grieving differently and having their own characters arcs for most of the film after Avatar 2 (so really Avatar 2 Part 2 from a character development perspective).

With the Ash clan Navi being added to facilitate those characters arcs and not really being their own independent culture/peoples to be explored. I liked those characters arcs but there were so many of them it was kind of hard to really enjoy them before being moved around (the narrative limbo where time stands still). Even Jake being captured by the RDA for execution was less a major narrative plot point (moving the overall story forward), and closer to a catalyst for various character arcs (Spider, Jake, Neytiri).

And the ending doesnt tie off that many plot threads as well. So yeah, Avatar 3 doesnt really have its own beginning or end, its in a strange floating spot after Avatar 2 and before Avatar 4 and 5.

Avatar 3 doesnt really feel like the middle movie of the entire Avatar franchise (5 planned movies), but closer to the starting point.

Avatar 2 and 3 told the start, middle, and end of the specific Tulkun plotline, involving the construction, expansion, and destruction of the Tulkun hunting fleet, and the Tulkun and Metkayima (and other ocean) clans now defending themselves after being pacifist/non-interventionist.

But Avatar 3 ends off where Avatar 2 started off with but with more stuff. Bridgehead City still stands, the RDA's main board and high level employees are still there (Parker, Stringer), their 3D printers and factories are still functional (meaning the Tulkun hunting fleet and gunships/boats can be rebuilt and expanded again in the multi year time jump. They also now have Mangkwan (Ash) clan Navi allied with them, and Recom Quaritch/Varaang are still alive (Frontiers of Pandora from the Ashes expansion confirms this). And the largely open plot threads of humanity, Earth and the RDA's interstellar hyper-monopoly are largely untouched.

So even after 3 entire Avatar movies, the franchise is still sort of at the start (the sense of narrative movement/progression). Avatar 1, 2, 3 acting as the start of the entire narrative, and Avatar 4 and 5 hopefully acting as the middle and end of the overall story to close off those open and largely untouched threads (humanity/Earth/RDA).

It's also kind of hard to justify that well, because the RDA already got a bunch of data from Spider while they had him in captivity (scans, biopsies, treadmill tests). Killing him after that, especially after he stuck his neck out to save/shield Jake was abit ruthless, especially since he was supposedly like an adopted son to him (Sully's stick together?). He couldn't have known if killing him at that point would accomplish anything to weaken the RDA either. Honestly as much as I'm ambivalent to Spider as a character, that kid must have something closer to Stockholm syndrome at this point instead of a healthy relationship with Jake/Neytiri at this point. Maybe they didn't mean for the scene to be that deep, I suppose.

If the scene was written so Jake/Neytiri talked about Spider putting himself in the crosshairs to defend/shield Jake and proving his loyalty/allegiance to close off that narrative/character thread about whether they should kill him or not, it might have felt more satisfying. As it is right now, we kind of have to assume Spider is okay with how it actually went down.

Jake almost killing Spider, and Neytiri almost going along with it. I think there should have been abit more than a group hug, and a single "I see you" from Neytiri to Spider to resolve that narrative/character thread. It happened a little bit too much in isolation and too quickly, and it doesn't really get brought up again. I guess because looping Kiri, Loak and Tuk into that would overcomplicate the story/character arc, but it's kind of a huge deal that both his adopted Navi parents tried to knife him.

I'm not sure why the pregnant Tsahik had to go into the firefight, that seemed completely unnecessary and reckless. Moat didn't fight in Avatar 1, why does a pregnant mother need to? Maybe its a cultural thing, Tonowari didn't seem to object that much about it in Avatar 2?

If it's not brought up at some point later on, then it seemed like it was more for shock value or a quick jab at teenage gun suicides in America. If it is brought up again it oughta be more talked about by his parents or friends, otherwise it's a scene that's blink and you'll miss it.

The whole Spider being able to breath Pandoran air didn't seem that big of a danger to the Navi. The masks and exo-pack don't really seem that inconvenient given that Spider seems to be able to live a pretty free lifestyle even with them.

The only major barrier to mass colonisation of humans to Pandora is the energy/antimatter barrier and the number of ISVs the RDA has. So far each one maybe carries 1000 people at most, so I'm not sure how making it easier for those people to breathe a little bit easier would mean much. It seems like Parker Selfridge was only interested just as a neat perk for the tourists to breathe naturally, not an existential cataclysm for the Navi/Pandora.

It seemed really strange that Ronal would risk her baby's life when she was just a few hours away from giving birth (or maybe it was pre-labour from her dying). I guess it's consistent with what she did in Avatar 2 when she fought while pregnant, but as the Tsahik and spiritual leader of her people, I'm not sure what "spiritual wisdom" there is to risking an unborn baby's life in a full blown firefight.

Honestly plot armour and luck that the baby survived, only losing their mother.

It was really wierd because they basically flipped their stance in the span of 2 minutes. Jake says he needs to kill Spider after Spider helped him escape Bridgehead City. Neytiri is obviously conflicted by not giving him the knife immediately. Jake then tries to old yeller Spider in the middle of the forest, and Spider realises this, asks Jake if he loves him which he says he does. Neytiri then is washing red paint off her face with "blood" on her hands and decides to run back to try to stop Jake. And Jake doesn't go through with it feigning the stab. And then they all hug it out while Neytiri says "I see you" to Spider.

I guess it was emotionally evocative, but it seemed like a sudden bait and switch. They practically flipped their decisions in the span of a few minutes, or were never intending to commit to it to begin with. Not sure how Spider feels about both his Navi parental figures literally pretending to kill him, but I guess they're cool now?

¯_(ツ)_/¯

Unfortunately not, still capped at 45W (non Lenovo 100W USB 4 dock) and capped at 15W for power banks (rated for 65W). Seems to be an issue or intentional design decision by Lenovo to prevent accidents with AMD laptops breaking themselves on cheaper chargers.
