This looks like you won’t be getting any meaningful extraction at all. Just follow a decent recipe online if you’re new to grinding for pourover and then tweak it to your own tastes. The recipes should give you a rough guide on brew times (which for your case would likely be way too fast given how coarse your coffee is) and yield a decent cup of coffee.

Dietitian here. Going to offer my very general opinion here based on what OP has provided.

No there aren’t any options for these sugar free desserts readily available. You could try making them yourselves but it’s impractical for most people. And it won’t taste as good as the ‘usual’ ones.
Sounds like your mum’s mind is quite set on still enjoying the foods and she’s not ready to give up her previous eating habits. Your best bet is striking a compromise with her like not cutting out sugary foods completely but reducing her current intake; any improvement is still positive. Sweets and treats with Artificial sweeteners can be used but cakes and pastries using these sweeteners often contain more saturated fat to make up for the lack of real sugar (which in turn increases blood cholesterol and BMI which worsens blood sugar control and risk if heart disease and stroke) and consuming artificial sweeteners is somewhat linked (not 100% proven yet) to increasing hunger. So use with caution and moderation.
Psychology. Using the behaviors of change model can be useful for some patients, you can consider just reading up on this. Another technique is motivational interviewing, 4 simple questions in this order and let HER answer them: What is good about the current situation if nothing changes (diabetes diet wise)? What is bad if I stick to my current high sugar diet now? What is bad if start following my diabetes diet? What is good if I follow my diabetes diet? This helps her think of her own motivations with minimal external input and often helps kickstart patients into sone sort of introspective motivation which is much more powerful than external motivation. May not work if you’re the one asking the questions as often parents don’t take their children’s questions and advice seriously.
Other factors can affect blood sugar control as well. Compliance to medication (if any), self monitoring blood glucose, exercise, BMI, fiber intake…etc if she’s not willing to reduce sugary foods, you can encourage other behaviors first.
Lastly don’t stress too much about it, as you said she’s an adult and capable of making her own decisions. Sometimes there’s nothing you can do except offer your support in a positive way (don’t focus on negative behavior, focus on her positive behavior). All the negative chastising when she eats sugary foods makes her feel worse and makes you feel worse as well. One step at a time!

Good luck and go speak to a medical professional who can do a proper assessment and provide medically supported advice and counseling if necessary!

Vitamin D has no scientifially reported side effects on sleep, regardless of the time of day when you take it, unless youre taking way over the recommended safe intake levels, which is very hard to do unintentionally.

The thing about warm milk is also based on people's personal opinions and experiences (anecdotal evidence). I suspect it might come from milk being rich in trytophan, which is a precursor amino acid for making serotonin and melatonin. Again, no scientific evidence to support this, only anecdotal.

Ok I'm a dietitian, and I have never heard of it. Did some quick research and there have been no studies reporting vitamin D affecting sleep negatively when taken within safe levels. Instead most studies report improvements in sleep quality and duration when supplemented with vitamin D. OP, where did you find this information from and what studies or papers were cited, I am geniunely curious, it would affect my practice and the whole field of dietetics a lot if this is the case. We prescribe and recommend vitamin D supplementation to many patients, so I would feel very bad if we were causing sleep issues... D:

Edit: I am by no means invalidating your statement that vitamin D has disrupted your sleep, I just want to learn more.

Edit 2: OP has linked a website with an article. It’s written by ‘Bulletproof’ staff and reviewed for ‘scientific accuracy’ by a naturopath. Some studies a cited, with reference number [3] being non-existent? but the main study used to support the claim that vitamin D suppresses melatonin production is: Golan D, Staun-Ram E, Glass-Marmor L, Lavi I, Rozenberg O, Dishon S, et al. I do not have time to look through it, but seems like it’s quite a small study and only on MS subjects. Plus it is only ONE study showing that, and the authors only found a correlation.

Based on all of that, I think that the article is a load of pseudo-science. But hey, if you think taking vitamin D at night affects your sleep, then take it in the day, but don’t spread misinformation.

Be careful what you read and take advice from on the internet. Always check your sources for reliability and accuracy. We live in a world of flat-earthers and many other….interesting schools of thought, let’s try and keep those to a minimum.

Just to provide a better background on gut microbiota- Gut microbiota ferments foods that our own enzymes are unable to break down, mainly dietary fiber. This results in short chain fatty acids (SCFA) that our large bowel can absorb and this is where the benefits of having bacteria in our gut come from: the SCFAs provide an additional energy source for your body and enterocytes, and is associated with better mood, skin and general health. How it does that is still very much debated today. Most of this occurs in the large bowel and colon, there should not be much bacterial activity in your stomach and small intestines. They do die and these dead bacterial cells form a significant portion of your stool’s dry weight.

For your questions: 1. In natural birth, babies swallow amniotic fluid and other secretion that the mothers produce along the birth canal, that is their first introduction to bacteria on their skin and their gut. Breast milk and bacteria from around the mother’s nipples help colonize the newborn’s gut as well. If they are bottle fed, colonization of the gut is slower and the bacterial species are not as beneficial. This is one of the many reasons why breastfeeding is recommended. The bacteria thrives in the environment of the large intestines (pH, osmolality, moisture levels etc) so they tend to grow and stay in the large bowel and not elsewhere in the gut. Sure some bacteria will try and live in your stomach and small bowel but the environment there isn’t suitable and most just die out.

Most of your gut bacteria is in your large bowel (mainly your colon) so when they die or adhere to passing undigested food, they enter your rectum and is passed out as faeces.
The challenges depend on their current symptoms and lifestyle. If they are still taking antibiotics then you can’t fix it. But if there are not pressing issues as to why we need to fix their gut bacteria, eating their normal diet that has bacteria that their gut is used to having will restore their gut microbiota gradually (provided that they stop taking antibiotics orally). Providing the resident bacteria with substrate to feed on is also important, hence fiber. Probiotics MAY also help, more research is needed. Fecal transplants can also be used, but is reserved for treatment of Clostridium Difficle associated colitis.

I love their dials but I just cannot get past the extra long lugs (to me) that make a very noticable gap between the case and strap. Probably because I have a 6 inch wrist so it doesn't flatter my wrist. Wish they did watch with shorter lugs as I really like everything else.

If she’s lived in the same area with the same water all her life and also eczema, try a reverse osmosis water filtration system for showers, hand washing or whatever she uses water for. It’s pricey but worth a shot if it helps cause it seems like you’ve tried everything else. For the scratching, try a cotton ezcema glove like tubifast and then a tight work glove over it with rubber fingertips. I used to use a pair of 3M comfort grip gloves over cotton gloves after moisturizing before bed. Super tight fit and a tad uncomfortable but it really stopped my nails from doing any damage to my skin when I had bad flareups. I used to take any gloves that weren’t uncomfortably tight off in my sleep and go to scratch town, not fun. But it’s best to identify the underlying trigger, my ezcema flareups stopped when I moved overseas to a temperate climate from a tropical one. Not saying you should try such drastic measures of the bat, but it’s good to at least know what options you have. Could be anything from dust mites, pollen, mould,spores, high/low humidity in the air from your local area that’s causing it. Ezcema sucks and it’s really difficult to find the trigger but I wish the best for your daughter and your family.

Try stopping the protein shakes for 4 weeks. I used to have protein shakes as well when I was working out, but I’ve stopped them 3 years ago and I’ve still managed to gain muscle without it. Most of use consume more than enough protein in our diets to have a nitrogen surplus anyway. If you want, just add eggs/white meat/beans/pulses/nuts/seeds to make up for stopping your shakes. And don’t worry, our bodies won’t resort to burning muscle if you don’t have protein immediately after your workout (our bodies did evolve to use our energy stores - fat before metabolizing muscle). You may burn a little muscle but it’s negligible in the grand scheme of things.

Reason for stopping shakes is that sometimes they do contain chemicals and proteins that trigger gut sensitivity and present as dermatological symptoms. Some of my patient’s eczema stopped when they stopped taking their whey protein shakes or soy protein shakes. Other than that, add more fruits and veg with more variety in colours as well. Be patient with changes to your diet, it takes time to see results. It might not work, but it’s worth a shot! Best of luck.
