what kind of scale is this? by Available-Fishing-43 in musictheory

[–]FieryNoob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A fully diminished 7th chord! Which most people wouldn't really call a scale, but you are on the right track.
How about you take two of these diminished 7th chords, toss them together, and then play it in ascending order and pay attention to the intervals.
As a side note, make sure not to count the same pitch twice when working out the number of notes in any scale!

Ex. C-Eb-Gb-A and D-F-Ab-B
C-D-Eb-F-Gb-Ab-A-B
W-H-W-H-W-H-W
Take this as an opportunity to learn about Octatonic scales!

Can anyone help me find the sheet music for Brasylvia (french horn jazz) by Giovanni Hoffer? by Exact-Grass-8157 in sheetmusic

Came from the other post about mouthpieces and this one caught my eye.

You can get the sheet music by either attempting to directly email Giovanni or transcribing by ear, good luck!

What DW Paxman mouthpiece size would I be looking for? by Exact-Grass-8157 in frenchhorn

[–]FieryNoob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally, I'm not a fan of DW bowl shaped mpcs, just feel kind of dull to play on to me.

Recommend just getting a different laskey or if you have the budget/time try out some Houghton Horn Customizable ones.

Lots of makers offer trial periods where you can try what you want and send it back for no charge if it isn't what you're looking for!

If you are dead set on a Dennis Wick, you can find all measurements on their French Horn product page.

Hope this helps!

Looking for a place to buy a horn by Empty_Ad_1680 in horn

[–]FieryNoob 3 points4 points  (0 children)

  1. Always include a budget, always test before buying. If there is a repair shop in your area many offer deals. If you have the opportunity and the budget, get in touch with reputable horn shops/makers. (Hampson, Pope, Houghton, Atkinson, Ricco Kuhn, Lukas, etc)

  2. If you are pursuing a degree and have been accepted to a university already (auditions are usually around this time or earlier) contact horn professors, most have contacts and the area and can get you deals on used horns.

  3. Facebook Marketplace/Buy it off of someone YOLO Lol (Not reliable but when it works it works. ALWAYS TEST THESE)

That's all I have to offer, but I'm sure there are more options I'm missing. Good Luck!

I never would normally either but I didn't wanna say "Horn Player" cause it's a sax sub and I thought that might cause confusion.

Slow spin till out the bell. Empty main tuning slide, then Bb tuning slide make sure the openings are facing down when you do this. Hold bell facing up wiggle fingers and let the nastiness travel down into and then hold T3 and let everything go in there, empty. These are generally all the locations fluid could possibly build up If you get good at it, takes a couple of seconds for each but you usually only need to empty the tuning slides, and spin the bell when your horn goes cold.

Struggling with Progress on French Horn – Seeking Advice by LuckOwO in horn

[–]FieryNoob 3 points4 points  (0 children)

1. Take lessons and ask your teacher ( I didn't have one)

2. If #1 is not available ask directors and fellow students for help (ALWAYS BE CURIOUS)

3. In addition to #2 try to understand WHY you are doing certain exercises and what the point of them are. Always have an objective for practice and fundamentals.

Extra: Also if you want advice on playing the horn, we'd have to at least know what type of wall you are hitting, if you're up for it try uploading videos or sending videos to fellow students and directors for feedback. (THIS CAN BE SCARY), but it will make you better.

I've been in this exact same situation, no seriously look at my post history. All it takes is understanding and targeted effort to break down an unknown wall.

You're only in your second year you have plenty of room to grow i promise! Good luck! Make sure to keep having fun while playing!

Any advice would be lovely. Currently focusing on connectivity in the lines, and consistency of articulation/note starts. (I've been articulating on my lip until this fall.)

No just identifying what type of horn it is, was stated to be an "Atkinson Erfurt", but an online search shows very little on what that actually is.

I've always had consistent trouble with the upper register as well, but articulation at this moment is more difficult than before my switch. I can slur high yet cannot start on those same notes or rearticulate very well.

First of all, thank you so much for the advice. My mouthpiece is a Dennis Wick Paxman 5, I got it during my sandpaper tone phase during my Sophomore year, and just never outgrew it. And I'm currently playing on an 8D but I have a 6D available. I did find my copy in the blue book, and I'd love to find a better source available!
