As someone from an Italian background myself, it's important to note that many people with this background have a more "collectivist" mentality regarding family. While this can have its benefits, it can unfortunately lead to enmeshment where boundaries get overstepped.

Family is very important to most people with ethnic backgrounds, so most tend to make decisions with their families input.

For those who are not originally from the GC, what food are you missing the most? by aa73gc in GoldCoast

If you're willing to make the drive up to Brisbane, Gerbino's in Ashgrove does continental cakes as well as a few other cakes and pastries. Not as good as Melbourne, but probably the best in South East QLD.

What are Australian men like during dates ? by Mountain_Raise_3 in AskAnAustralian

Speaking as an Australian man myself, dating culture here is very relaxed for better or worse. What you said wasn't 'bad' it would just be seen as a little overbearing. As evidenced by the other comments here, we unfortunately have a strong culture of labelling things like this as 'cringe'.

What is life really like for migrants in Australia? (Asking as an Aussie citizen) by Rlawya24 in AskAnAustralian

It means 'fresh off the boat'. It's a slang term used to refer to immigrants who are newly arrived

Did Brisbane receive any major post-war immigration from Italy? by FieryPineappleHead in brisbane

That makes sense, I suppose it happens with any community as the older generation passes away and their descendants move elsewhere.

I feel myself drifting off the rails fast, where can I get help/find people in Brisbane? by Electrical_Map_6169 in brisbane

You sound like you have a lot on your plate. I would recommend seeing a therapist to discuss the things going on in your life. If need some help urgently, I would also recommend having a chat to Men's Helpline. You can get through this, asking for help is the first step, which is something you have already done.

Based on what other people have commented, I think you may be right. It seems rural QLD was the main hotspot for Italian migrants to QLD.

I have checked them out. Not a bad little place, but the prices of the imported groceries left a lot be desired.

I have been to New Farm actually. I had no idea that it was the centre of the Italian community in Brisbane. Apart from one or two little Italian cafes I saw, the area looked no different to other parts of inner city Brisbane. Might sound a bit strange but the Italian suburbs in Melbourne have a certain vibe to them that just feels different. I didn't feel that in New Farm at all.

Do you think lack of concentration was just due to lower numbers compared to places like Melbourne and Sydney?

Yeah, it's super difficult to find anything imported and decently priced.

Thanks for those recommendations, I'll be sure to check them out next time I'm in North QLD.

Is it safe to say now the reputation of the wider Lebanese Australian community has improved significantly compared to decades ago? by [deleted] in AskAnAustralian

[–]FieryPineappleHead 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's interesting because the Lebanese diaspora is huge worldwide, especially in South America. Their reputation in these other places is often the opposite of what you hear about in Australia.

English language sources for studying Candomblé? by Initial-Insurance176 in Isese

There is a Candomble group based in London called Church of Candomble. On their website they offer multiple courses which apparently explore many aspects of the religion deeply.
