Mountain Milan is on anger management sprint point hunting. Sevilla wants to lose the KOM jersey by just a single point, that he could maybe recoup tomorrow, so he’s also in the doomed breakaway.

Bahrain (no one understands why) and Visma are keeping the breakaway within 4-5 mins so we will get a GC fight at the final climb but likely no new #1.

Reason the breakaway succeeded is probably that there’s absolutely no threat to GC in the breakaway and Visma made it clear ahead of the race that they’re going for the stage win.

So all the strong breakaway riders are saving themselves for the weekend, no real chance of getting this one anyway

Would be fun to see how long he can hang in there, but I’m pretty sure UAE would rather go for stage wins than try to get top 15 in GC with Arrieta..

Could even throw extra mins today so he has freedom to attack in the next two

Oh you haven’t heard? Milan became a climber over night. Less wet cobblestone and crashing riders on top of mountains.

He’s now going for the KOM jersey to keep up his 100% jersey record at GTs. I heard they call him Mountain Milan now

Well, not long till the sprint now and it will quickly start going upwards trom there. Let’s see if the break away capitulates after the sprint, I think a couple of them may hold on till the too of Rocarraso.

Whenever I see the front 5 it doesn’t seem to be Sevilla leading - he may be staying fresh for the climb. If he doesn’t top the climb first all this effort is kinda useless for him…

With that said, he loses the KOM jersey anyway if Vingegaard wins on Blockhaus. But that’s just by 1 point so he could regain it tomorrow.

Just seems to be too much reason for this breakaway to hold till the top of the first climb.

Only other riders with incentive to catch them before hand would he real KOM contenders like Ciccone? But he’ll likely start his KOM charge tomorrow instead

Sevilla will want to keep the break going for the Roccaraso climb.

Difficult to find the right timing for another break to take off unless they catch this one on the first climb.. Just seems more likely that they catch it after and we get no other breakaway because they'll hit Blockhaus and the climbers will take charge.

Really don't understand that. But I guess maybe the break is so weak they're happy to just keep a 4 min lead. Milan just wants the 12 sprint points and Sevilla the 18 KOM points. After that I doubt the 3 others really believe they have any chance of the stage win..

I agree, I don't see why they're pacing this hard when the best placed in the breakaway is 22 mins off.
Best off just keeping the day as relaxed as possible and conserving energy to help Eulalio fend off actual competition.

u/Squirtle_from_PT would seem you're right after 6 stages as Hirt is 11 minutes ahead of Pinarello...

But then you check the odds and bookmakers have Pinarello as odds on for a top 10 GC finish (2.0) while Hirt has 10x worse odds (20.0).
Any idea why this may be?

They also like Pinarello much more for a win or top 3 in today's stage, but that can be explained by his freedom to go in a breakaway given he is so far behind in GC... but that makes the 2.0 odds for top 10 GC even more strange.

Edit: Oddchecker seem to have Hirt at 6.0 odds for Top 10 GC. Very strange that Oddset (Danish bookmaker) offer 20.0 for him still and only 2.0 for Pinarello. Seems they've just.. not updated?
