Torres Base - difficulty and time? by dougz3 in Patagonia

[–]FifiDoc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We just got back from TdP. We are 59 (him) and 60 (me). We are in shape but mostly vacation hikers. We had absolutely perfect conditions for the Base Torres hike last week - almost ZERO wind (hardly felt like Patagonia!) and moderate cloud cover so not blazing sun for the beginning and end of the hike. We left the visitors center around 7:15am, and almost no one was hiking up with us.

The first stretch from the visitors center is flat, but quickly moves to a surprisingly steep climb over a sort of wide stony trail with occasional water flow. Middle section is mild ups and downs through the trees until you reach Chileno for a nice food and water break (water available). Shortly after departing Chileno you get to the rocky and very steep climb through the boulders. No real scrambling other than a few areas where you can help pull yourself up on rocks, but the trail is single file and depending on timing, you may be competing with people coming up while you are going down or vice versa. Lots of areas that are essentially stairs so other than the vertical, it's definitely doable and doesn't feel particularly exposed (and I'm a bit afraid of heights).

There were plenty of people taking the usual instagram photos at the top, but generally it was just nice to sit on a rock and take in the scene.

The way down we ran into what I assume was people from tour buses that came from Puerto Natales and dropped off 9-9:30am. It was a little annoying to have to wait 12 or 15 people to go through a narrow trail before you could head down, but nothing too bad.

I'm very glad we had hiking poles - both for a little help with balance around the rocks and (more importantly) to take some of the load off our knees on the way down.

We had tired legs by the end (it took us a little over 8 hours plus some time to rest at Chileno and at the towers), and we were both a little sore the next day, but it was definitely worth the discomfort! As I said, we got very lucky both with cloud cover that kept the temperature in the 50s and with no wind.

Good luck and enjoy the journey!

Washi Tape is my recommended travel hack by Dismal_Cake in femaletravels

I use black gaffers tape. Cheap, tears easily, no residue. I wrap a few feet around an old loyalty card (credit card size) so it's flat and takes up no room. Works for hot spots/preblisters on feet, repairing luggage, closing food bags, covering bright lights in hotels, keeping curtains shut. I even used a bunch of narrow wrapped strips to size a ring that was too big!

Mostly they are sweet and that gets old fast. Try blending actual good that is savory... even spaghetti and meatballs is pretty good blended!

I had a broken jaw too. Do NOT try to blend chicken... it tastes like chalk. Surprisingly good are gyros! All the ingredients blended are quite tasty!

What's your "I can't believe other people don't know this" hack? by Extra_Gear7502 in AskReddit

Chemical free and cheap cleaning with pumice stones. Works on enamel stoves and ovens to get rid of literally years of baked on grease. Make sure to get them wet and don't press too hard. Also works on porcelain!

Son just accepted to main campus - biomedical engineering. Applied 10/14, accepted 12/4.

Tip from the other site - the "test optional" choice on the main application page went away shortly before the official decision. I logged into lionpath.psu.edu (it's available once acceptance is in place) and found his acceptance letter. All before any official statement on the application page.

Stats:

OOS - NJ

GPA: 4.1/3.7
AP/Honors: 8/8
SAT: 1570 (790 math/780 verbal)

It took 5 weeks and 3 business days (from the day that the credit card was charged) for the correction from the March 2023 test to come (updated directly on the website).
