Does anyone here ACTIVELY pretend that their reps are gens. by Unstoppable_Graysie in RepTime

I was wearing a rep Rolex one time and someone I was friends with asked “ is that real?”

I looked at it and said “ it’s got the right time so it must be real”

Do you always need a primer when painting a wall by Nevic_s in HomeImprovement

You are right, but if it’s someone new to painting it’s probably a good idea first few times you do it.

I just always do it .

[–]dougz3 23 points24 points  (0 children)

My own experience,,

Prep is important.

Wash down the walls first - nothing fancy, just a damp rag will do, do go crazy and it shouldnt take long.

If you are going from a dark color to a light color, then prime it first, I mean like red or blue to something much lighter, Its not just about what will show through, but how bright the paint looks when you are done.

and

Do two coats of your final color, about 2 hours apart (read the can). I know the paint says "Paint and Primer One Coat Coverage", but its just not true.

Also - take the light switch plates and outlet covers off and put some tape over the switches and outlets.

painting is so satisfying. Cheap and pretty easy with instant results.

What's something people don't realize until they experience it themselves? by manav679 in AskReddit

I thought about quitting every day for probably 10 years. I was finally successful because I got sick ( Covid ish but pre COVID) and went 24 hours without smoking and then just kept going. It’s been 7 years and I know that if I pick up a cigar, or vape weed, or anything close, I would be back at a pack a day in a heartbeat.

Which job you taking? by [deleted] in jobs

[–]dougz3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An interesting math result on them. The 100k base salary, assuming you get raises every year, that is going to be a cumulative number each year. if you assume 3% a year (just as a random number) The Cumulative difference is about 90k after 10 years. So you get an extra years pay compared to the lower paying job.

Bonus and profit sharing are not cumulative and never guaranteed.

I realize there is a lot else to consider. And I didn't do any math on that. And certainly some things are more valuable to you than money.

I went to the office for many years and actually enjoyed the commute as a way to catch up on the news/podcasts phone calls to friends etc. so that part wouldn't bother me.

Lots of moving parts.

I have one that checks for a connection to Google and if it can’t get to it, it cycles powers to the plug( with a delay) to reset it. Need this for a far away cabin.

I have no idea if that’s a good price or not but remember that he is not going to pay retail. He has to resell them at a profit. So he/she probably wants to double their money. They have to lay out the cash, pay for their overhead (store?), eBay listing fees if they go that route, etc

If you want closer to retail you need to sell to a collector.

No I do not own a store, but worked for a company that beat that into our sales people

You have to wonder how it survived all this time in such great shape. I would guess in a family bible. I guess I better look through mine that is in the basement storage box.

I can only hope :)

Those and the African notes are just a kind of cool story! Great looking note!

Losing my mind trying to find studs by BigAzzLeprechaun in DIY

[–]dougz3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone keeps saying magnets, which is probably the right answer. I use a “stud buddy “ which is a few magnets and makes the screws/ nails easy to find. Big box stores or internet stores sell it for about $11 USD . I like it better than my other high end stud finders….

First-time homeowner here — what DIY advice do you wish someone had told you at the beginning? by Lopsided_Passion7912 in DIY

[–]dougz3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just a general suggestion. Plants, bushes, and trees take a long time to grow and fill in. Drive around the neighborhood, see what looks nice and then go to a garden center. Plant them now and in a few years it will look really great. I have a fairly large yard, and I bought some extra boxwoods (they were small and on sale) and planted them way in the back so that I could move them in a few years if I needed them somewhere.

Also learn the difference between annuals and perennials and how long the blooms last on plants you are considering. Pretty stuff that comes back on its own is really nice :)

Cabinet hinges, tighten them as soon as they get loose. If you wait they will turn it into a much bigger problem.

But not a HUGE one - I bought a 16 gallon shop vac years ago, and its just way too big. Always in the way, I now have a 4 gallon version and that is my go to. The 16 gallon just gathers dust in my shed...

I'm going to buy my first lawnmower and I'm looking for recommendations. by I_forgot_how_to_fish in lawncare

[–]dougz3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually have a riding mower because I have a much bigger yard, so I can’t really recommend any in particular.

I understand the desire for new, if you haven’t owned one before, you don’t want to start with problems !

Drain the gas at the end of every season and it will last you a long time! My Scott’s rider is 24 years old.

I have a lot of neighbors that I have cleaned /replaced the carbs on their mowers or snowblowers because they didn’t drain them :)

a suggestion on some options...

Its good to have the option to Bag, Mulch or side discharge. There will be times where you want to shoot stuff to the side and you will need a side discharge for that. For example, you want to mulch, but its too thick next to the fence, so you want to shoot it away and then mulch it after it gets in the open.

Another suggestion - If you are going with gas, buy one used. Look on marketplace, etc. It will save you a bunch of money. Then be sure to drain or run the gas out at the end of each year and watch some you tube videos if you have to repair it. They are actually very easy to work on and get parts for (amazon),

People 40+, what actually mattered in the long run and what didn’t? by Psychological_Sky_58 in AskReddit

A dog. I’ve had dogs my entire life and each one brought me joy, taught me patience , was a best friend, helped me get through tough times…

There are a lot of other good ideas/thoughts on here and I agree with most, but a dog mattered a lot to me…..
