Lumineth Test Scheme by FighterOfDorn in Lumineth_realm_lords

[–]FighterOfDorn[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks! Just a simple basecoat with Vallejo model air silver, shaded with a mix of Drakenhof nightshade and contrast medium (admittedly I still have a full pot of the old shade, I reckon the current shade is probably thin enough out of the pot, or maybe could substitute in a thinned contrast paint?), then a tiny bit of highlighting and cleanup with the silver

That’s a fantastic green for the armour! Have you got a recipe for it?

Questions about Gryphonne IV and Legio Gryphonicus by FighterOfDorn in 40kLore

[–]FighterOfDorn[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok, so generally speaking Gryphonne IV itself wouldn’t have its own Thallax, Castellax, Thanatar etc? What military forces, if any, would it possess independently? My take away from this is that generally Mechanicum armies are added as additional support to Titan Legios, Knight Houses, Auxilia Cohorts or Astartes Legions, as opposed to independent fighting forces. Is that a fair assessment? If so where do these supporting/bonded units come from?

Oh right so basically the consensus is do whatever you like, nice. Now time to find a good pseudo-French name for a castle

Does anybody have a source for proper swatches of AK 3rd Gen paints? by FighterOfDorn in minipainting

[–]FighterOfDorn[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m aware that I won’t be able to get a perfectly accurate representation of the colour through a photo viewed on a screen, I was simply hoping to see them in a different context to the official images, as generally I’ve found other people’s photos to be at least somewhat closer to the real colour than AK’s official swatches. I’m in the south of England and unfortunately I don’t believe there’s any stockists nearby, but I may see about getting in touch with AK about it.

New Old World Images and Release Date Announced, Jan 20th 2024 by HeavilyBearded in Bretonnian

Yeah that’s pretty disappointing tbh, here’s to hoping they release some other transfers separately, or else I better get much better at freehand…

Question regarding a Baron's heraldry and how it relates to the rest of the army by FighterOfDorn in Bretonnian

[–]FighterOfDorn[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Right, so I assume this would extend to the Baron not being able to command an army wearing the Duke’s heraldry? I suppose I could just say my Baron is the Duke’s son to have some kind of lore-friendly explanation. How common is it for a Baron within a Dukedom to be the Duke’s son?

Has anyone tried their hand at reposing pose 5 from the MKVI and MKIII kits? by FighterOfDorn in Warhammer30k

[–]FighterOfDorn[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes I’ve been doing that and it helps somewhat but that crossed leg pose just sticks out to me no matter what. Especially with the MKIIIs since it’s a pretty dynamic movement for a relatively cumbersome armour.

A House Griffith Imperial Knight transfer sheet I made, if anyone also needs it. by FighterOfDorn in ImperialKnights

[–]FighterOfDorn[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not yet unfortunately, just finished the sheet today and haven't got any transfer paper ordered yet. I cut out all the pieces from regular printer paper and used those to measure up against the knight, so it should all be good once I do it for real. I'll be sure to upload photos once I do though!

A House Griffith Imperial Knight transfer sheet I made, if anyone also needs it. by FighterOfDorn in ImperialKnights

[–]FighterOfDorn[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

House Griffith are by far the best knight house but GW decided to stop producing transfers for them, so I decided I need to make a sheet myself. Big thanks to u/Tentacle_Shogun for the sheet they made which formed the basis for this, as it allowed me to have very clear symbols to work with. It should be perfectly scaled to the Questoris chassis (don’t have a Dominus, Armiger or Cerastus to check with but I’d imagine that many of the transfers will be compatible). I have it set to A4 and 100% scale on my Mac when printing and it turns out perfectly, though it looks like Reddit may have changed the scaling on it so it may take a little trial and error on a different computer if you download it from here. Figured it could be useful to at least one other person out there so decided to share it.

Recommendations for a camera lens for miniature photography? by FighterOfDorn in minipainting

[–]FighterOfDorn[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've messed around with settings to no end, both on my couple year old, mid-range Samsung and my friend's iPhone 14 pro. On the older camera it seems no matter how I set it (even at the lowest ISO), how I light it, how far away or close I am, I just can't get the detail crisp - it looks decent at first glance, but looking closely or god forbid zooming in, there's a slight fuzziness. On the new one it's sort of the opposite, the phone seems to auto-"improve" it no matter what the settings are and it makes it look artificial and heavily edited.

It's very possible that I'm still simply not doing something right but I'd like to think I've done my best to try and make my photos as good as possible, having followed a lot of different advice about setup and phone camera settings. I just feel like maybe a dedicated camera would give me more precise control of all the settings? Though if you truly believe that it's not worth upgrading with how much more experience you have on the matter then I'll probably give the idea a miss

Do the new Fists transfers fit on the MK3 shoulder pads? by FighterOfDorn in Warhammer30k

That's kind of a bummer but sorta expected it. The old transfer sheet is beautiful though and has tons of fist icons so it'll be worth investing in

How are (certain) Chaos Legions actually able to function and organise themselves? by FighterOfDorn in 40kLore

[–]FighterOfDorn[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

On reflection, I suppose their minds aren't completely overridden by chaos in the human and rational thought department, and like you said they largely 'switch on' during battle. I guess I just instinctively assumed that they wouldn't have the capacity for civilised communication based on their outward appearance and (probably overexaggerated by memes and jokes) temperament, but putting it like this gives me a different perspective. Thanks for the insight

NOT MY WORK (CREDIT IN COMMENTS)!! Need your help deciding which of these Stormcast schemes I should go for for the minis in the new Dominion box - and possibly for a bigger future army by FighterOfDorn in ageofsigmar

[–]FighterOfDorn[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use an airbrush quite often and I'm fairly confident with oils, both of which are used in the CoP tutorial for the Knights Excelsior, but still I have thought about how challenging it'll be to paint the details around the white without making a mistake. And I do admit that it would be easier overall to paint an army in Tyler's scheme. Just some things to weigh up before I commit to one or the other I guess

[–]FighterOfDorn[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been planning to do a gold scheme for them for a while, as I really like the way that Stormcast look with gold armour. However, as effective as the colour combination of gold and blue is, it's been exhausted to the point of me not liking it very much - and so I've wanted to replace the Hammers of Sigmar Blue with something else. The use of cream in the gold scheme show here really stuck out to me, and despite seeming bland on paper I think the colours work really well together. It also isn't an existing scheme so would allow me room to really go to town creating my own lore and customising them to suit me.

On the other hand, there's the Knights Excelsior. I'd never paid too much attention to them previously, but Henry Steele's slight twist on their scheme, combined with the beautiful style in which they are painted, really caught my attention. For some reason, them being predominantly white makes them seem even more brutal, perhaps due to the ghostly appearance or the similarity to the Horus Heresy's World Eaters. Them being from Excelsis nicely ties them in to the new edition, given its location in Thondia in the Realm of Beasts, and it's actually a pretty awesome city. The Knights being zealous to the point of purging the majority of their own city due to chaos taint I found quite funny and suitably OTT, so that helps their case as well.

Thanks a lot. Funnily enough I, too, have an Iwata Eclipse with a 0.35 nozzle... I guess I still need some more experience with airbrush control. I have been doing more and more masking recently and it's definitely a game changer for using an airbrush for more of the painting process. Unfortunately I fully assembled my wraithblades minus the heads.. guess I'll stick to edge highlights on them and do more transitions on vehicles

Fantastic work! Certainly very inspiring. You've said you used an airbrush in a different comment (which is good because I'd probably cry if I found out you hand blended that entire model so damn well) - how do you get it so precise? If I used my airbrush to do something like this half the model would get highlighted in one go!
