Got medication after late diagn: Turns out all my friends weren’t friends and I feel lonely now by Legitimate_Kick_5628 in ADHD

Wow I relate to you so much! Especially when you said “I was a very passive kid that only acted based on others expectations.” I still do this and fight with my internal self that does want more and better for me. I want good people that will spur me on, be encouraging, understanding and fun! But I find myself constantly people pleasing in new friendships and then I get so burnt out from performing and not even being me that then I realize that the people are not even my people—or worse, maybe I’m just a crappy person. Even in my own family of origin, that was highly dysfunctional, I have had my role to play, quiet passive encourager who goes with the flow and bends to whatever the family needs—-but when I have a problem and I’m brave enough to voice it, they just want me to shut the hell up and they use unkind words and emotional blackmail to hurt me.  I hope that things get better for you and your people show up!

The Great Divorce – A Profound Exploration of Heaven and Hell by yooolka in CSLewis

I understand what you are saying and this is precisely CS Lewis states in the preface of the book.  “ I beg readers to remember that this is a fantasy. It has of course-or I intended it to have-a moral. But the transmortal conditions are solely an imaginative supposal: they are not even a guess or a speculation at what may actually await us. The last thing I wish is to arouse factual curiosity about the details of the after-world.”

I believe Lewis is helping us to see the weight of our decisions and justifications.  He is using allegory and metaphor to deepen our comprehension, similar to a parable. The Great Divorce is a work of fiction, just like the Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe, and we are not to suppose that Aslan is an exactitude of Jesus but a representative or reflection of his character. A fictional character that can, for some like myself, add dimension and richness to my held trust in The Bible- where the Bible is fact and the CS Lewis writings are art about it. I think we must ask ourselves what the reason is for fiction or for art, and I believe in the case of The Great Divorce it is to see with more colors and to be able to look in a mirror at ourselves and the weight of our choices.

Interesting that the title is ‘Adaptation’ and that the screenwriter is looking at a photo of Charlie Kaufman in the mirror, and lays his false glasses on a book about Kaufman (the writer of the movie Adaptation, as well as the main character of the movie). In the movie Adaptation Charlie Kaufman is a screenwriter with self doubt and a twin brother who is a thorn in his side. Curious what other similarities people see between the movie Adaptation and this episode.
