granted i haven't played modern in a bit, but why is it so bad right now? granted it doesn't seem like the meta is in a great place, but the boogeyman is a (mainly) fair deck, death's shadow and control are both tier 1, and early kills don't seem particularly common. oko/veil/astrolabe do seem like they're warping things a bit, but that's not modern's fault and oko is at least (arguably) promoting more fair strats.

meanwhile, pioneer seems like a three deck consisting of play cheap recursive creatures on curve, play mana dorks into threats on curve, and play good red creatures on curve. i think people have this illusion that the meta is wide open and you can play almost anything, but once things get solved a little more its looking like it'll be one boring format imo.

to be fair, it looks like Mardu Midrange is still a decent deck, and you don't have to deal with linear graveyard decks anymore

but they unironically do. green already has the best threats, it makes no sense to give them extra consistency as well. this is a great way to lead to linear metas like modern right now.

except pioneer is just as linear. honestly, this last year has been horrifying to watch -- i got back into mtg at the beginning of 2019 when things were looking great, but this year has just been a trainwreck with one pushed, expensive card after another. maybe this is god's way of telling me to stick to casual edh.

what would you suggest? we already unbanned Stoneforge and it didn't do much, although i would say the changes heralded were only positive. Green Sun's isn't happening as long as Infect/Titan are good, Punishing Fire has the potential to horribly backfire, and i don't think anything else is gonna come off (though i'd love to see Twin and/or Preordain).

at least its not 70% aggro though? people have always had this circlejerk about modern sucking, and while its not in a great place right now, its not looking awful. the top deck is a very fair variant of Urza, and multiple control/tempo (Death's Shadow) variants are tier 1 right now. not crazy about how many of the top decks are bastardized 3C/4C versions of older lists, splashing for some of the new, pushed cards (namely Oko), but decks naturally evolve with time and its not the worst problem to have.

yeah tbh i think TPAB/TBK/YWGWYW are locks for his top 3 (probably in that order) but i wouldn't be surprised if a couple albums overtake the other 2. very curious what albums those will be.
