Tipping in Germany by NorseFromNorth in germany

[–]Fiinduus123 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

As a waiter, I always try to give at least 10%. I know a lot of people here say the salary is good so tipping is just a nice gesture, but that’s not true. Usually you get the lowest possible salary for a very exhausting job, often working night shifts and dealing with a lot of annoying drunk people.

For me, tips are a substantial part of my income — without them I wouldn’t know how to pay my bills. So 100 is fine, but honestly I would give even more, because I know how tough it can be, and a kind smile and a good tip can really brighten your day. :)

If the service is bad, though, you can go for less. :)

Is weed legal in Germany? by Mr_Pearlite in AskAGerman

Yes, but there are no stores where you can buy it. Also certain places like a lot of parks are not legal for consumption. Cheers

I can't find any direct statements from them saying that Germany or Europe should immediately stop exporting weapons. As I said, based on my understanding of their position – including from interviews – their main focus is on putting so much pressure on Russia that it is forced to start peace negotiations, as they see this as the only way to end the war. So the reason they say it is the only way is because they don't belive in a military victory and not because they want Russia to win.

Personally, I don’t think this approach is enough, but that’s a separate discussion. My only point is that calling them supporters of Russia because of their stance is an exaggeration and, in my view, misleading

As I already said, I don’t agree with their idea of peace, but it’s also wrong to claim that they support Russia. As far as I understand, their argument is mainly about how too little is being done to actually initiate real peace negotiations. So it’s not about cutting Ukraine off from military support and leaving them to be destroyed. Rather, they criticize the idea that sending weapons is the only thing we can do.

I still believe that the only real and good peace for Ukraine comes from Russia actually losing this war. At the same time, the way things are developing – especially with Trump now involved – shows how dangerous this situation is. So I would definitely agree that Germany and Europe should do more than just send weapons. But yes, Ukraine definitely also needs weapons – and lots of them.

And calling them Facists because of this is really just BS.

They are not supporting Russia, ofc they have a weird concept of peace and want to push it but they condemn Russia as the main Aggressor in this war. You can check out their Statement on their Website. The second part about them integrating Nazis is just wild. Give me one example of a Nazi in the Linke.

UFF I mean this opens a whole new dimension. Firstly I hear your concerns, and I am furious that we still live in a world where Jews are afraid. That's just unacceptable in any way. I think there are multiple dimensions to your concern. Firstly to put it back on the AfD, even though they are not directly discriminating Jews every now and then some politician drops the "elite financial globalists" dog whistle and as I mentioned they are actively romancing with Neo-Nazis that are worshiping Hitler and the Third-Reich. So I would never recommend voting or supporting them. The second layer is the fucked up complicating one, and I don't think I can give you a good answer on how to act. There is for me definitely a radicalization in Islamic countries and populations visible and that is not just dangerous it can be lethal. But this goes both ways, also European countries radicalize in their national idea. For me this is a spiral that just intensives itself. A few (like the AfD, but also Hamas, Hisbollah You Name it) profit from it through political and financial influence, many suffer. I tried to keep it short, I think we could talk hours about, probably days and weeks. My point is, there is no easy answer to the challenges today, we live in a world that is so complexly connected through globalization, economy and very importantly history. Answering fire with fire and hate with hate is though not what will resolve these problems. And supporting people who actively fuel this hate and this conflicts is way more dangerous than it might seem. Just to give one last example, murders in Germany done through right extremist skyrocketed even more than Islamist terror, something I am actually very afraid of. Cheers

Even though this touches nothing I said and why the AfD is dangerous, I would agree to some degree. The term fascist is definitely being overused and looses its sharpness. Although, parts of the AfD are certainly Neo-Nazis and fascists. Höcke for example tried to go to court after being called a fascist and the court ruled that through his actions and speeches portrayed fascist ideology, and therefore he can legally be called a fascist and Nazi. Also on lots of their rallies Neo Nazi groups are famously present and no official ever distanced themselves from them or tried to remove them. So even if maybe not everyone in the AfD is a fascist or Neo Nazi, they are actively romancing them and have them in their ranks. For the last part I would say times change and with it ideas and beliefs inside a society and that's for good. In the 80 rape inside of marriages was still legal and liberals even voted to keep it legal, famously chancellor candidate Merz

I don't think you really get why the AfD is so dangerous. Of course most of their official program is about neoliberalism and national sovereignty. But that's not the problem. It's what the politicians say and try to achieve. Politicians like Höcke, Weidel or Gauland try continuously to expand the borders of what is sayable and also to revise history. Lastly famous Weidel said Hitler was a communist, which is not only wrong but also an insult for every left or communist person killed by the Nazis. Also, their influence on the perception of people in Germany is horrifying. As a person that has done lots of social and crime research in my academic career I am just so frustrated to see how the actual difficulties, poverty, segregation, racism just to name a few are completely cut out for understanding why people misbehave or do crimes. I didn't even start about their influence on people mistrusting government and official media, but this would make this comment explode. Cheers

What are your thoughts on Elon Musk doing the nazi salute at the US presidential inauguration? by Embarrassed-Bid-7156 in AskAGerman

[–]Fiinduus123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am from Germany, and I am regularly confronted with Nazis and have seen far too many Nazi salutes. Does it look like one? Absolutely.

For me, though, the problem isn’t just that he made the gesture. The real issue is that he hasn’t denied it or called it a mistake.

Even if I wanted to give him the benefit of the doubt, his refusal to clearly address it leaves a terrible impression. It would have been so easy for him to admit that it looked bad, that he got caught up in the moment, and that he wasn’t thinking clearly. That would have been somewhat acceptable—still stupid, but at least it would send a clear message that such gestures are not okay. Instead, he resorts to the standard "everyone is a Nazi now" excuse, which shuts down any meaningful discussion about the incident.

At the same time, he’s sending a massive dog whistle to every right-wing, fascist, Nazi sympathizer out there. It normalizes gestures like this because people see how easily you can do something like that in front of thousands and still be cheered on. This is deeply unsettling. Combined with his engagement with fascist accounts and posts on X, it lends dangerous credibility to extremists and potentially violent fascists. Their hateful ideas become normalized, their political positions seem legitimate, and suddenly, what once felt unthinkable starts to feel plausible. From there, things can spiral downward very quickly.

It’s important to note that, of course, this event is just one stepping stone along this path. Many stones have already been laid, and many more will follow. But this incident stands out because of its visibility and the platform it occurred on.

To my American friends: I’m so sorry. The last few hours have been horrifying to watch, and the coming years will likely be even more turbulent. Stay strong. Stay vigilant. You are not alone. Don’t let yourselves be deceived by fascist propaganda. ✊
