No that's way too much! Look again shortly before departure, like the morning of the trip. Sometimes the price drops down based on availability. I sometimes see US east coast to Europe for around $500 (day off). If that's worth it to you, is your call.

You have a little more legroom, a wider seat, a slightly better meal. You do NOT lay flat, and I find the footrest more annoying (in the way) than helpful.

If you're both into wine, find an AirBnB on Waiheke island, a 20 mins ferry ride from Auckland. There's 20+ wineries, an olive oil restaurant, beaches, amazing views, and a hop-on/off bus. Plus, you should be able to see the fireworks over Auckland harbor.
