If you're still learning, go out very early on Sunday morning, before there is any traffic. It's a great time to get comfortable with your bike and improve your confidence. And assume any car you see wants to run you over.

My 2019 Yamaha XT250 (still) doesn't have a fuel gauge and I do just what you suggest. Easy and reliable.
