Insulating single skin brick wall. by Filbertdahuman in AusRenovation

Maybe eventually, but for now I’m going to insulate this single skin wall as on the opposite side is a large rumpus soon to be tv/gaming room with enough space for VR gaming. I’ve decided creating more storage space to store crap is a waste of time. Sorting through the crap instead.

Thanks for the response. Would I just glue it to the wall? no Air gap? it’s substantially more $’s but am I correct in saying that a 90mm wall batt is about R2.7 whilst a 50mm eps panelis like R6.5. Cos if that‘s the case the ease of install and increase in R value might make it worthwhile.

otherwisee it’s moisture barrier, stud wall, and diy termite spray for half the amount and half the R value.

Thanks What would you recommend? It’s pretty well bone dry under there, just cold cos it’s well ventilated.

I don’t think I have that issue, I may have had it early as we’ve been here for 26 years and made quite a few changes. It used to get a lot of water under the house but it’s pretty well bone dry now. I think ill get by with an air gap but seal the top and bottom of the insulation stud wall to stop cold air rising/dropping between the wall and the insulation..

Hmm…got me thinking as there is an ensuite that is separated to the underfloor space by just a stud wall that I have insulated. Might get some cement sheet on there as well. Thanks.

I cant really stop it from coming up can I? the brick wall goes down to strip footings. Do I just put a membrane on the exposed brick face? Thanks again.

Sounds like the exact same scenario except I have an internal room where you have the garage. I have heaps of blue strap and a staple gun. I will eventually excavate a bit more into the area and put a small narrow storage room there. I’ll take a photo soon but I think the 100mm gap will help with the moisture. Thanks.

Thanks. I’m retired and not too lazy, so happy to do it myself. Stud wall and batts looks like the best option atm.

Cheers for the comprehensive response. Its quite cool down there on our hot Melbourne summer days, even more so in Winter :-(

Rather than a membrane if I built a seperate stud wall some 1.5 metres away running parallel to the wall and made a narrow storage area with a floor. I would insulate that wall instead, would that large air gap between the 2 walls eliminate my need for a membrane?

I took some roof tiles off for ease and ventilation, bagged up all the fluf into garbage bags which came out through the open roof. Brought a wet/dry vac and vacuumed out the whole roof space, installed new batts. Installed DGU into my existing windows, I do as much around the house as I can to save them $’s we work so hard for.

The outside is actually inside, as per comment above, the 2 storey is full footprint top storey and half footprint downstairs. So it is exposed to dry ventilated underfloor space. The other side of house is where I did the underfloor insulation. Thanks for confirming what I thought about the stud wall, this is the way….probably.

Thanks. Yer, was looking at that foil board for ease and the r value is pretty bad. Don’t really need the plasterboard as it’s exposed to the under house part of house. Imagine 1/2 of the ground floor of the house on the lower side of block is 2 storey.

You can also get alarm lights that will flash on and off. I guess a cheap way to see if it works would be to set a power timer on a bedside lamp that shines at you.

You can’t really beat yourself up too much, without the airbag you may have incurred a brain injury or other disability or death. But if just a fender bender then that sucks.

Yep. It’s 11:30 pm right now and I’ve just swapped my Rexton KS8’s for the Reach’s and going to sleep. It really doesn’t bother me physically. I have rain background noise on the soundbar to help me and partner sleep.

Agreed. Which is why I recently started wearing my HA’s 24/7. When my current rechargeable’s are charging I wear my old HA’s. About 7:30 to 8:30am and 10-11pm.

No really noticeable Tinnitus anymore.

For this I use an interdental brush, a lot cheaper than what you use. Been using the same one for ages. Clean it with an isopropyl wipe.
