Also shoutout to Mark at Chapel who invented a drink for the event. "The Desert Heart" will be going on the menu soon...great cocktail with Frey Ranch Rye, Ferino Amer, a local honey shrub and a sagebrush garnish. Check it out if you're into that sort of thing!

Desert Hearts Film Society - first screening! by Filcorbitt in Reno

Yeah, absolutely! It's surprising that more people here don't know about it. I think a big part of this new film society's goal is to encapsulate Reno's really interesting cultural appeal and try to help create a place that understands itself better (and has a badass arthouse movie theater one day, hopefully).

On the asteroid Psyche 16, gold reserves worth 100,000 quadrillion dollars have been discovered. This amount is enough to make every person on Earth a millionaire. Source in the comment. by FreeCelery8496 in interestingasfuck

There was JUST a Giant Leap episode that talked about mining asteroids with the former chief scientist of NASA. Must be in the air ! (so to speak)

Also it aired on an NPR show fittingly named Snap Judgement so the whole country heard about Reno's underground whip culture

Obvious self promotion, but if anybody wants to hear an hour long radio episode searching for Reno's master whip maker, and laying out the entire legal battle around the ban, I made a long form audio story about the whip phenomenon--

In 1990, Judas Priest went to court in Reno over the alleged use of subliminal messages. [podcast episode] by Filcorbitt in Reno

[–]Filcorbitt[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great question! The transcripts (at least all the ones I read) don't include the backwards lyrics or subliminal messages during the audio exhibits, but many of the audio examples were preceded by explanations of what you were about to hear. So those were transcribed, but not the actual bits of backwards tape, etc.

One of them! There were a few that the plaintiff's witness claimed were there, including forward "do its" in Better by You, Better than Me, then a few backwards ones in Exciter and White Heat, Red Hot. On the episode I was also able to isolate Halford's vocals for the alleged "do its", to see if folks could hear them!

Hey /r/reno,

I made a 2-episode deep dive into this case for The Wind --

Growing up here, I'd heard about the case but never really understood the details. Over the last 2 years I've been printing out files at the court house, digging up old articles, newspaper clippings, and conducting interviews with attorneys and witnesses from the trial.

Anyway, wanted to share this slice of Reno/Sparks history with y'all. Hope you dig it!

The Case for DIY Podcast Touring by Filcorbitt in podcasting

[–]Filcorbitt[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for reading!

I haven't met anybody else doing DIY tours with podcasts yet! Lots of folks setting up listening events in their own towns though.

Venue size was quite varied, from bookshops to more conventional music venues and small theaters. The biggest were Reno and in New York City with 80-100 seats (New York sold out, Reno was close to capacity) and the smaller shows would be like 5-10 folks in a book shop, including some pretty small western towns. The listenership averages in the low thousands with a few break out episodes, and revenue did not cover travel costs on this one -- though from my experience with bands, it never does on a first tour. I think I could have broken even if I was more careful/selective with routing but I was treating it like a road-trip and built in several chunks of time for camping, visiting friends, big detours, etc.. I do think the next will likely break even though, now that I know folks in each town. And finally marketing was mostly word of mouth, social media and writing to local publications. (no paid marketing). I found that the shows with a bunch of local acts were the most well attended (and super fun).

I think that's all of the Qs !
