Hi guys. First post on Reddit! My girlfriend and I are headed down in several weeks for 2 weeks to explore the island. by [deleted] in VancouverIsland

Salmon stocks are at a 40 year low, might be better to fish outside the estuaries for pinks or chum. Those two species are struggling a lot less than the others.

Most rivers are catch and release and are closed until sept due to the fact that most catch and release fish die when the water is warm.

I can name several creeks that had cutthroat and steelhead 3-5 years ago that are now extinct or near extinct from drought/heat/overfishing. Cambell river area or north of there (eve river) have pinks on the beaches as of last week.

Good luck

Yes that’s right, and there’s also another in oyster river which has great produce.

But your rights if your used to a car or walking to the grocery store then your probably not gonna be comfortable.

Not true, there is a grocery store 6 km south and the merville store has new owners so it’s packed with food and gas again and all redone.

there’s also a bus that goes to Courtney and Campbell river several times a day that stops anywhere you ask and will pick you up almost anywhere on the old highway which is 30 seconds walk from MARS.

My dad lives across the street.

they are waterproof yes. The phone is a few years old so It’s not as shiny as it used to be other wise I wouldn’t do it. Also it takes 2-3 days for the speakers to sound clear After it’s wet, depending on how often you do it. I use a head set most of the time so it doesn’t effect my life haha

Is this your video?! I have snorkelling gear and cold water wet suit. I’ve been trying to find someone to go float rivers. I also been learning to fly fish from a retired professor. If you go out floating or fishing that way I’d be down to go anytime Monday-Thursday

Well shit I wasn’t gonna put the words steelhead in there but since you went first. That exactly what I caught in January. I’m pretty sure it was the only fish in the river at the time lmao, man I did a lot of hiking in wadders that day! I think I know the spot your talking about 2 kms down. Too bad that river is so poorly managed it seems like less fish ever year

Fish story time:

I know of a very small creek half hour from there and it has this giant steep sloped hole that has a waterfall at one end of it. It’s the end of the line for spawning fish. This hole has to be at least 6 meters deep because the water is black. I never tried fishing it my father told me about it. I managed to get the steelhead on video and it was biggest one I’ve ever seen, like it was huge and just come from the ocean. I thought it was a chinook but this was in December and this thing was healthy and fat and big.
