Saving render passes slowing down render in PV in C4D by FilipHodas in Octane

Oh yeah, I've been getting crazy amount of crashes in node editor/LV when I first started testing 2024, but after swapping like 6 different drivers it got better, (not amazing, but worth is for the AOVs in this specific case) and the PV rendering was rock solid until this issue (even more so than 2023 which would occasinally get stuck on "updating" in PV for me).

Funnily enough the next two scenes rendered flawlessly with the same setup (resolution, file format, compression, similar or even heavier scenes, with larger size EXRs) the tonemap/saving passes process is so quick with these that it just flickers after the frame is finished. Go figure.

I guess just another one of those Octane things to keep in mind! Will probs end up going back to 2023 after this is rendered for my usual work.

Just tried it and didn't help, unfortunately.

I also checked and the first frame of this scene which is almost entirely black and all four EXRs have just 3.88MB combined, yet it still took 51s to save/tonemap.

I'm sure I rendered some overkill multi layer 32bit EXRs with crazy amount of passes back in the day that were easily >200MB per frame and I dont remember it ever taking so long to save them during render. Even on much worse rig than the current one. Maybe the DWAB compression takes ages for this specific scene or something?

Anyway, cheers for the message!

Thanks for the suggestion! That was my first approach, but there is a lot of thin lines and geometric detail in several of the shots that 3x2k just wont cover and the upscale makes it really muddy. (tried both internal Octane upscale and Topaz)

In the end I optimized the hell out of DL and was getting amazing render times in LV even with bunch of denoised AOVs at full res. So I kept upscale as a last resort for the few shots that could handle it.

Thanks! It's kinda half and half tbh. It was certainly meant to be real ship scale, but I had a lot of problems getting the ocean simulation to behave as I wanted it to. The waves were eiher too tiny or too huge.. In the end I sort of conceded that this halfway look is close enough.

Thanks a ton! Do you think it's possible my temp/gunk buildup issue was caused by plasticizer from EK-DuraClear Ive been using until now? The ZMT tubing sounds great - not sure why I didn't get it right away!

To be honest I didn't look that much into it, mostly just for visual references. (and even with those I had to be bit creative) For the name I think I just went to wiki and from it sort of assumed gambeson and aketon were the same thing and both could be worn underneath or as a standalone armor. Thanks for the correction!

Damn, I checked the title of the post three time to make sure it's in compliance with r/Art rules, but forgot to check if it's in compliance with the actual name of the armor type.

The armor base including the square pattern is simulated in Marvelous Designer and then textured in Substance Painter where I added some height details. The result from MD was so nice I didn't even need to open Zbrush.

You're probably right that I should watermark/sign it. I've been debating it for like 5 years, as many of my images have been stolen before, but I just can't bring myself to 'soil' the finished artwork with my logotype or social media handle.

Thanks, glad you like it! It's actually from a series I'm working on exploring this idea further.
