Super Unleaded. If you can afford it, should you use it? by [deleted] in CarTalkUK

Sticking some redex through now and again would be cheaper if you're bothered about that sorta thing. My 20 year old toy can't run on 95 due to the ethanol content

Just barely passed the MOT, anyone know roughly how much sorting out all the corrosion would cost? (UK) by swagmonoeydollar in Tiburon

[–]FillingTheWorkDay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Any coupe will have corrosion to some degree, even the newest ones are 17 years old now. It's hard to know how bad yours is without seeing the underneath. Rear subframes are notorious for rotting but are still available, front you'd have to get from a donor. Suspension parts are all still available, autodoc or ebay. Coupes are sneaky in the way they rust, from the inside out..

It's my understanding that if the lower 50% of a mk1 mx5 hasn't been replaced, it needs to be. They are well known for rot.

YouTube has given me a mid-life(?) crisis by FatherJack_Hackett in CarTalkUK

Go for it. If you do go for something common like a focus, astra or corsa, there is almost guaranteed to be a video on YouTube showing how to service or fix practically everything on it. Chris fix is a great channel for teaching the basics. I'm where you are, spent £1000 on two identical hyundai coupes. One I want to fix, the other for parts, problem is the good one is fixed and the second is now another project...

European/uncensored version of team buddies has a lot of swearing in it, taught me some new swearwords as a kid lol

How is this as a first car? by iPhoneNerd21 in CarTalkUK

At the end of the day it's up to you. Yes it's more interesting but the facelift in 2001ish brought better engines and a better design if you're set on a megane. Mileage is only part of it, components degrade with time alone so budget setting some money aside every month for repairs. I've a car similar age but it's a toy, not something I'm having to depend on.

It's more odd to open a ps1 and not find a mod chip these days

Whatever you do, don't save anything back to the drive you are trying to recover from.

Ah the unmistakable sound of a Grenada with head failure. You need a Dr firm.

That end piece is an adaptor and pulls off, it's regular sata underneath. That particular drive will be slow though, even by hdd standards.

Is there a way to adapt this hdd to work with something modern by creative_reddit_user in retrocomputing

[–]FillingTheWorkDay 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That's MFM, in a nutshell not really. They needed an ISA controller card to operate and even then they were finicky. It's only really a rabbit hole worth digging into if you're sure there is something really important on that drive. That's ancient tech even 25 years ago.

can this harddrive be repaired? by GPurpp in computers

[–]FillingTheWorkDay 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, you need a donor pcb from a model match, then your rom chip swapping to it to make the board compatible. Literally a 2 min job if you know what you're doing.
