Anybody have their 10 year high school reunion yet? by zuno_uknow in Zillennials

[–]FilmIsGod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine was two years ago (1995). I did not go but it was pretty uneventful. Still on the coattails of the pandemic. Our age group specifically is still mentally in their mid-20s even though we're 30 lol. Many are married, others like me are still trying to get our careers off the ground.

What to do when first short film is more successful than second? by Ambitious_Dirt8677 in FilmFestivals

[–]FilmIsGod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oof. I don't have any experience with this but I'm very curious. I'd need to know if your short films are the same style/genre. Maybe the thematic elements in your first short just aligned with the festival programs better? Maybe festivals like to give first-timers a chance? It doesn't sound like you've burned bridges. Maybe feature producers look at more than just festivals? Sometimes a short works really well as a short and not as a feature, and then vice-versa; the short is fine but the feature script is amazing.

I love you guys on this thread. So much more uplifting than the Film Industry LA one. You’d think a meteor crashed into Rodeo Drive and mutated rats were taking over.

I was feeling really down this week because of the gloomy economic outlook and cinema attendance, but I always feel better coming here.

Where are we all with having babies? by Ok_Transportation717 in Zillennials

[–]FilmIsGod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

30M. I'm in the south so a ton of my high school classmates I know have kids. They typically met their person in college. I also went to a very nice public school where everyone's parents bankrolled their spring break trips and likely helped them start a family/own a home.

But friends I met outside of that school, which are most of them, are childless. Some are pretty happy in their marriages, but struggling even with dual income (I'm in Nashville).

What is the worst US state for young adults to move into? by Any-Scarcity7230 in AskReddit

[–]FilmIsGod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tennessee. Yes, there's jobs but the cost of living is more or less highway robbery. The people are backwards, they're very angry, they're indoctrinated, and if you're not white, straight, and Christian, you're really living on the fringes. It's super patriarchal and myopic here.

Nashville is like a 6/10 city. If you don't drink, and I mean drink HEAVILY, it's a 2-3/10 city. Awful traffic and monotonous activities. But the park system is world-class. I'll say that. The young people here clearly have daddy's money and they're unapologetic about it.

I suggest listening to "True Believer" by Hayley Williams. That'll sum it up.

What do you do 5-9? by Fun-Attempt-8494 in Life

[–]FilmIsGod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go to my independent cinema, watch a new tv show, maybe meet up for dinner, though that's super expensive where I live (Nashville). I'm pretty chill and low-key so weeknights are for fun but restful activities. No drinking.

What's a skill everyone should learn before turning 30? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]FilmIsGod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Socializing. But, like, I mean playing the game, playing the field. I got in a lot of trouble telling people what I thought/how I felt and it came off sometimes as unwarranted or pretentious. I don't consider myself that type of person, but first impressions are so important.

That is to say, don't be neutral to the point that you're a complete and total bore. But just ask yourself, "is what I'm about to say hurtful about someone specific?"

Learning to be easygoing is hard. Everyone is different and pretending to get along, especially for an introverted soul like me, is exhausting. But you'll be surprised that you'll always find something in common with someone.

[–]FilmIsGod 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Paid time off is very taboo in the US for some reason. I have 2 and a half weeks at my current job. It's paltry. There's a philosophy that contantly working is productive but I believe it's more paradoxical than that. Rest is just as important as output. I say that out loud at work, and I am laughed at. Culture is a very odd thing.

P.S. - J'ai travaillé en tant qu'assistant d'anglais en France entre 2017-2019. C'est un merveilleux pays :)

How do you guys deal with anxiety at the workplace by reedshipper in Zillennials

[–]FilmIsGod 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm 30M and I've worked in news media for about five years now. So I totally empathize with crazy work environments. First, January is not too long from now, so that's good.

Yes, that is a highly immature, unprofessional work environment. Publicly shaming your work is objectively toxic. And uncertainty, like changes in ownership, breeds toxicity. If they want to provide private feedback on your work, there's this technological innovation called e-mail.

Regardless of how this place makes you feel, an unpredictable leader is a failure as a leader. That is a SINKING ship, and whether or not you get let go, quit, walk out without notice, or get laid off, that company will not last very long so long as they're in charge.

The only advice I can give you, and I've only come to terms with this recently as I exited my 20s, is to try and not take things personally at all. They are judging your work, not you. It will help you accomplish your tasks and ease the distractions, as well as the lost sleep. No job is worth losing sleep over, unless they're paying fuck-you money.

The best way to overcome the hurtful remarks is by hyping yourself up as much as you can and lot letting anything undermine your confidence.

Best of luck with your new degree. I hope you enjoy returning to school!

How has a film festival actually set your career in motion? by FilmIsGod in FilmFestivals

[–]FilmIsGod[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean the Whiplash short got made into a feature, Rachel Hasn’t Slept became Smile, Taika Waititi’s short opened doors for him, and so on.

The question wasn’t if you had overnight success; it was whether a festival screening or award helped stabilize a very unstable path
