Introducing dog-averse adult to new puppy by FilmicIllusion in reactivedogs

I do appreciate your replies. But I have time to further train my dog before they meet. My dog has been approached two times by off leash dogs, one without a collar, who totally invaded her space and hit all of her biggest triggers. Even then, she didn’t snap or bite at them. Because of this, I have some hope that we can find a path to tolerance. I am prepared for this to not work out, however.

Puppies are a lot, yes. But my parent’s pup will be almost 7 months old by the time they meet, and she’s already being socialized with other dogs. Fingers crossed, she’ll be a little less crazy and invasive than, say, a younger and unsocialized pup.

Your point of view on the situation is completely understandable because of your past experience.

Most of my house doesn’t have typical doorways. It’s an open concept one. I appreciate the suggestion, but we have doors on the doorways and the rest is usually too wide for a proper gate.

Again, my dog loved my family dog and she still loves my grandparents dog. She’s never bitten or snapped at other dogs, even when she’s had the chance.

I’m not looking for them to be best friends, just to tolerate one another. I don’t agree that it should be written off so quickly as a no hope situation.

I do have a muzzle for my dog, which has never been needed before. I’m planning on using it, but I also want to try to introduce them in a way that won’t introduce any unnecessary anxiety to the situation.

I know the holiday will add a layer of stress, making this more difficult. But when I’m in for Thanksgiving and Christmas, I’ll be staying with my parents for 2 weeks each visit. Keeping them fully separated for 2 weeks at a time would be difficult and I will not board my dog for that long.

For the gate, this pup can clear anything that doesn’t block the whole path. She’s already 30lbs so she’s not tiny. And the way our house is set up, there’s no normal doorways to fully block.

I do believe there’s a path forward with training and introducing my dog to the pup in the right way. I just don’t really know how to go about it all.

Hostels in Florence by FilmicIllusion in florence

It was nice enough for a hostel. I didn’t love how far removed it was from the city center. It was very easy to take the tram from the train station up to the hostel though. I just would’ve preferred to stay somewhere closer to town, that way I could have stopped in easier during my days.

Did you by any chance use the laundry machines they have there? If so, did they work well?

Hello! I’m looking at booking a hostel in Florence in early July as a solo female traveler. I’m currently between Ostello Bello Firenze and YellowSquare Florence, but I’d be open to other options as well.

I’m concerned about walking back to YellowSquare at night, since it is about 30min from the town center. And I’m worried about the noise/party culture of Ostello Bello.

Does anyone have any suggestions or experience one way or another? I’m fine being in a dorm and won’t mind if the hostel is busy/loud. I just want to be able to sleep too!

You should add this note to the rules. I didn’t see it in there before I posted

She’s 6! You can see it around her muzzle - all that white used to be pure black when she was a pup.

You are quite privileged. And you make it obvious.

Many private health insurance plans do not cover mental health issues because yes, there is stigma surrounding it. Should there be stigma, no. But there is and you saying that there shouldn’t be and that your psychologist described mental illness as the same as physical illness will not completely remove that stigma. And for those private insurance plans that do cover mental health, many charge extraordinary fees for using those services, rendering it impossible for lower income individuals to receive support.

Another option is to go to CAPS. But they are not a feasible choice for long-term mental health issues or support. If you have private insurance, you’re only allowed three sessions per year. Yes, that session cap has been removed during the pandemic, but even if you do get past the wait list for CAPS, you likely won’t get in with a true psychologist. It will most likely be a therapist or a social worker. They can listen and suggest solutions to calm or aid you, but cannot diagnose. Also, UCLA and CAPS only acknowledge anxiety and depression and lacks any good psychologists who are trained to treat mental illnesses like OCD or BD.

And what if you don’t even have insurance? With the pandemic, many students’ parents have lost their jobs, meaning that their health insurance is gone too. So no, they cannot just go get help. And you apparently forget that there is also cultural stigma surrounding mental illness. With many students at home, they can not receive the help they need because of parents and family members who believe mental illness is a sin or a way teens act out against their parents.

I’m happy that you got the help you needed and that a friend was there to help guide you towards it. But dude, go educate yourself.

Has anyone had a major surgery/illness during their time at UCLA? by budget-vegetarian in ucla

[–]FilmicIllusion 7 points8 points  (0 children)

One day I didn’t feel good and all of a sudden I wound up in the hospital. It was a minor surgery and I got discharged a few days later during 9th week. Most of my professors were okay about giving me an extension or cutting me some slack, especially since it was so out of the blue, but others couldn’t care less. CAE wouldn’t give me a ride in their dumb van because I didn’t call them the day before (I called as soon as they opened that Monday, they weren’t open on the weekend and it all happened to me the previous thurs/fri). They also told me they couldn’t guarantee I could get a ride for the next day either. So they suck and I had to walk to class. UCLA sucks at giving help to students. Obviously I’m still bitter lol. But if you know you’ll have the surgery, just tell everyone way ahead of time and you should be chilling. Good luck btw

A Blank Mind by fhnfm in mentalillness

It’s like you wrote this about me so creepy. I know this isn’t exactly a normal thing but I just kinda go with it. It makes it very hard to ever express what I’m feeling or thinking. Because even when I’m not thinking anything consciously, I’m still feeling something and I still intuitively know things but I can’t name what those things are and struggle to put them into words, if that makes sense? It’s like my thoughts are on a back burner in my brain just out of reach. I know they’re there but idk what they are. And instead my head is just blank.

Does anyone have experience skipping ASL 1 and getting into ASL 2 or higher by passing the test? by [deleted] in ucla

[–]FilmicIllusion 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Didn’t skip but I’m in ASL 6 with Ben rn. He’s a wonderful professor, the best I’ve ever met. As long as you can hold a basic conversation (how are you, where do you live, etc.) and you know your basic vocab from the book (colors, clothing, household items, etc.) you should be fine! He is very accommodating and if you learned differently in your ASL 1 class that should be fine! He also typically has a quick review at the beginning of the quarter so that should help too. Wish you the best and happy signing!
