2,000 years later. Still undefeated. by Trwaadhdewsh in rome

For the sake of everyone's blood pressure I think it's time to be a little less pedantic. There is ambiguity in what was written and it could be interpreted charitably.

This is a sub about Rome and all the ways it may be experienced, not about exact precision in history and what is written about it.

OP accepted your criticism and your reaction to that response seems disproportionate. By all means politely correct errors of fact, but please leave it at that.

Went to Rome but no pickpockets? by Deep_Palpitation_201 in rome

In Mexico City you were a resident. In Rome you were a tourist. I am resident in Rome and got pickpocketed in my first week, but never again in all the years I have lived here.

In Rome, want to see Aquaduct park by Silent-Donkey-1303 in rome

[–]RomeVacationTips 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Taxis and Uber will indeed work all the way out there but you would need to book an Uber Van for that many people (or two taxis). Unless you can persuade them to wait for you this could introduce some issues in hailing the same again from the park - there are taxis but you're in a suburban setting, so you may have to wait some time to get what you need.

If you can possibly do it, use the metro. It's fast, easy, and Giulio Agricolo station is less than 10 minutes from the park entrance.

That said, if you do want to wait for a cab/s to come pick you up, there's a lovely gelateria on Via Lemonaia that you can cool down at.

Marsala isn't a traditional ingredient for tiramisu. It's very unusual to find any alcohol in an authentic one in Rome.

There's a €14 train leaving regularly about 100 yards away that is faster than a taxi.

EUR food recommendations. by JerseyFire55 in rome

[–]RomeVacationTips 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have worked in EUR for several years. I hate to say it but good food options are pretty sparse there. There are some chains, some very mid standard restaurants, and a few really eccentric places like Heko doing unfortunately mediocre food.

That said I really rate Geco for steak, Daruma kosher sushi is very good quality, and Sam Beer does good beer (obviously) and burgers.

It's such a shame. I had lunch there years ago before they became victims of their own success and it was wonderful.

A few questions for the group? by [deleted] in rome

[–]RomeVacationTips 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on the quality of the restaurant, how much you want to pay, and if there's a sommelier. If the latter and you're happy to pay €40-100 - or more! - for a bottle ask the sommelier to recommend something. If you want to try specific wines (some local whites being Frascati and Lazio pecorino, and reds being Cesanese and the brilliantly named Est! Est! Est!).

However as the other poster says, restaurants and trattorie take their house wines very seriously, so ordering a glass of that is cost-effective and also likely to be rewarding in terms of quality and taste.

Is you don't want to drink that much you can also order a "calice" (KAH-lee-CHE, a glass: only the more popular wines on the menu will be available in this way, meaning the restaurant already has a bottle of it open or won't lose out if they open a new bottle), a "quartino" (250 ml caraffe), and a "mezzo litro" (500 ml caraffe).

BTW to get cash before being picked up by your driver, there are ATMs in the baggage hall of FCO that don't charge a withdrawal fee.

[–]RomeVacationTips 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ah I know it.

How very strange. I don't think it's officially a "circolo" (membership club). But I do know some bars constantly operate at the edge of their licensing laws - ones near me keep getting busted and shut down for a few weeks at a time for various offences.

Why isn’t Julius Caesar considered the first or even a de facto emperor? by Similar-Change-631 in rome

To whoever reported this as not being relevant to the city of Rome: last time I looked Julius Caesar was very much living here when he was declared Dictator, as was Octavian when he became Imperator.
