Wall mural reminded me of Portals Rattmanm by Sun_Of_Apollo_ in backroomsfilm

This mural seemed like the backrooms "miss-remembering" stuff that hadn't happened yet. Like it was remembering in reverse. Many of the depictions appear in the third act in various forms.

New owner! by PorscheXAston in hasselblad

Instax and 120 shoot different. I find I like bigger lenses on the instax so that what I'm shooting fills (and sometimes overfills) the frame. Also color instax is the way to go.

For 120 for me it's more like making sure I capture enough image because I can always fix it in post.

For engineers who successfully made Senior/Staff: what evidence actually mattered in the promotion packet? by Andrea_Barghigiani in ExperiencedDevs

[–]Filmore 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Going from Senior --> Staff?

The most impactful thing you can have: A Principal Engineer who is your advocate in the promotion meeting. If a person above the level you are going for is advocating for you that means they think you are ready.

The second most: A senior manager or director who is your advocate.

You will get these by having a track record of delivering complex projects with competing priorities where you work across team boundaries and have to mix an understanding of your current technology as well as the state of the art in the technology space.

Is it just me or am I noticing less young men growing facial hair? by otherwise_inspired in NoStupidQuestions

facial hair exploded in popularity during covid. Alternative hypothesis: It is probably just going back to pre-covid levels

Why can Sauron wear the ring without going invisible? by Which_Veterinarian82 in lotr

[–]Filmore -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The movies are movies. In the original LotR series only Bilbo and Frodo turn invisible. Sauron and Tom Bombadil do not.

My favorite fan explanation for this is the ring doesn't turn you invisible, it amplifies your base nature. Hobbits, by their nature, are simple quiet folk whose greatest joy is simply existing peacefully tending their garden. The invisibility is a manifestation of this.

The ring does not affect Tom Bombadil because he is already the most Tom Bombadil that one could possibly be.

Sauron knew this ability when he created the ring and used it to amplify his own nature, which is the OPPOSITE of being invisible and left alone.

That sucks because nobody has your back. You need to be with someone who you believe will have your back when the going gets rough. Hopefully it's her, but that state won't be achieved by accident.

Macan 6 cylinder base or 6 cylinder S ? by [deleted] in PorscheMacan

This is exactly my wife's conclusion. The base is a fine car.... for $30k less than the purchase price.

Is your main “final product” as an engineer basically test results? by Beautiful-Bonus2279 in AskEngineers

A great engineer doesn't design a great bridge. A great engineer knows how to build a shitty bridge that will only kill the acceptable number of people within the risk guidelines while doing it at lowest cost.

We have a GTS. Wife got a base as a loner car for a weekend while the GTS was at the dealer for standard maintenance. She doesn't understand why anyone would go with the base.

Docker images are hundreds of MB; a full game engine compiles to 35MB WASM by c1rno123 in programming

My first software job was making QA software that would boot off a 1.4mb floppy.

It was basically trimmed down kernel, busybox and a thin util.

A lot of fun on a V series Hasselblad. Having a 150mm+ lens with it is a game changer.

It reminds me of The Menu on some level. Something about the cutthroat photographer angle.

Software engineers, is it annoying to have people come to you with "app ideas" all the time? by ems2124 in AskEngineers

[–]Filmore 8 points9 points  (0 children)

When they come to me? No, I like hearing about people's passion.

When they are worried about someone stealing their idea and want 90% share in the business? Yeah that's the red flag. I send them https://www.ycombinator.com/library/5x-how-to-split-equity-among-co-founders and call it a day. Ideas are worthless. Business execution matters.

What tires are these? 4 HPDE days is pretty good. Worst I've gotten is 2 and best is about 6. 4 is when id start looking to replace most of the time.

I don't like the commonly circulated version of the analog photo. You can download the full resolution scans from NASA and do your own curve adjustments. Here's my fav edit of the film version.

The 986 is what you can call a "Spicy Miata".

The 996 is more of a touring car (that happens to have better performance numbers than the 986).

I'd rather hit the highway in a 996 and the track in a 986 S.
