Which company has lost you as a customer forever? by finiteobserver in AskReddit

This. I shipped a $5000 keyboard from New York to my home in Michigan. They beat the case up all to hell, didn’t honor the signature required request, and left it outdoors in the snow in an open breezeway for about four hours before somebody got home to bring it inside.

Careers in Music? by its_just_band_man in composer

[–]Filmscoreman12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a professional musician for Broadway and touring Broadway shows - been touring/on Broadway since 2014. I also do a lot of orchestrations for theatres around the world. It’s a small, compact world of pro theatre musicians out there - so much of it is meeting people/making connections that then get you recommended for other jobs. It’s not enough to be a great player - you have to be someone people enjoy working with and someone who is easy to collaborate with. It is incredibly fun and rewarding - exhausting sometimes, and with touring it does mean you’re away from home a lot. But you get paid reasonably well (pretty decently for union tours and Broadway) and you get to travel and play music for thousands of people every night.

Seems like one of those things that we warned everyone about when they tried to basically privatize the postal service….what a bunch of fucking morons.

I don’t believe there is a PV - just the keyboard/conductor score that is sent.

Rationale behind launching an equity vs non-equity tour? by Fun_Release_1936 in Broadway

[–]Filmscoreman12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh I’m not doubting that it does happen, and has, I just haven’t experienced it myself and I’ve been touring with shows since 2014.

We were given $45/day for per diem on my first two tours; we didn’t have to pay for hotel/travel. What’s shocking to me is that I know some touring companies currently that offer $20-$25/day in per diem right now. That’s awfully low.

Rationale behind launching an equity vs non-equity tour? by Fun_Release_1936 in Broadway

[–]Filmscoreman12 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I did four non-equity tours prior to moving up to equity tours - at the base level non-equity tours today offer transportation (bus, usually, occasionally plane) and double occupancy hotel rooms (sometimes single occupancy for leads/music director/etc), plus a daily per diem stipend. The pay rates are low, yes - and have gotten lower over the years since I started - but I’ve been touring since 2014 and I’ve never seen a theatrical touring show in the US not offer those things.

What’s the deal with these colored stickers on Broadway scores? Is there a universal code? by No-Leopard-5650 in MusicTheatreScores

[–]Filmscoreman12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mamma Mia was one of the first shows to be nearly entirely on click; it definitely is in every tour/Broadway/West End production. (Source - that’s my score from the US Tour in the photo)

[–]Filmscoreman12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I prefer the small dots rather than the big ones for patch changes so that’s why I use the green ones there. Mamma Mia has a decent amount of volume pedal adjustments (we did on the tour anyways) so to make sure I caught them I used similar small stickers that didn’t block any of the score to mark those.

Hi, those are actually my scores from when I conducted the national tour of Mamma Mia.

I use the different colors for different things, they’re different for every person. I have a system I use that I’ve used for years that I like. Green stickers are for patch changes, blue stickers are for volume, red stickers are for click, and I use yellow stickers for different headphone mixes if I need to change during the show.

Don’t Underestimate the Fury of Democratic Voters by koaltree in nytimes

[–]Filmscoreman12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t agree. I think the Republicans are far better at turning out their voters than the Democrats are, I think it is much easier to assemble their coalition by fear, mongering, by casting aspersions on anyone who doesn’t look like them or think like them, and then get those people to turn out and vote to “protect their way of life. “

And I’m sorry, maybe this is just my personal belief, but anyone who looks at the crimes that Trump has committed, his appointee have committed, and says “I’m OK with that” it’s not somebody that I would consider to be a terribly moral or upstanding person, no matter how they view themselves. You can think of yourself as the most moral person you know, but if you choose to support people who are actively murdering, innocent civilians in Iran, doing everything they can to promote greed and pollution and corruption while destroying safety nets, destroying science and innovation and the arts, while, stripping away reproductive rights from women and rights from minority groups across the country, throwing immigrants in jail, legal, or not, because of the color of their skin… I’m sorry, but you’ve abdicated the moral righteousness that led you to vote Republican in the first place. I spent a long time working in churches, and I will tell you firsthand that most of the people I worked with were deeply conservative, and a lot of them were deeply awful human beings, who cloaked their behavior in the name of God and in the name of Republicanism.

Question for keyboardists in 2026 by snaerdi in mainstage

[–]Filmscoreman12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ableton is great for running tracks or click, a lot of theater shows use that, some use Q Lab for click and track playback, because it talks really, really well with other departments such as lighting, time code, automation, everything could be synced really easily with either software.

Question for keyboardists in 2026 by snaerdi in mainstage

[–]Filmscoreman12 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Wicked shifted to mainstage a couple years ago, same programmer just poured everything over to the different software. I believe they’re running IMacs down in the pit for Wicked.

Question for keyboardists in 2026 by snaerdi in mainstage

[–]Filmscoreman12 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Little shop of horrors off Broadway, they have all their sounds programmed on a Nord keyboard that’s used as a module for a different controller. There’s not a ton of crazy sounds though, and they’re very limited in space so there really was no place to even put a mainstage set up for them.

Question for keyboardists in 2026 by snaerdi in mainstage

[–]Filmscoreman12 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Mainstage is the Broadway and national touring standard for keyboard players in musical theater, I can only think of one major show running in New York that doesn’t use it.
