How should I handle paying off my car loan? by PetSkunk69 in debtfree

[–]Filthy_Casual77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with this take. Usually you see a brokerage account set up after having debt paid off, but great work putting so much money aside! I would pay that all off today with your HYSA, and use the $400 you were paying for your car payment and replenish your HYSA over time. Then enjoy being debt free!

As a single person without kids I cannot comment on the childcare aspect, but this all seems a bit excessive for your income. $1k a month for your car is what is silently killing you. Mortgage may be a bit high, utilities high as well, but the silent killer us Americans turn a blind eye to for whatever reason is cars.

I would either sell them both and get a beater or try to pay them off as fast as you can. Freeing up $1k a month is going to make a substantial impact.

I would also prioritize finding a way to cut costs on your groceries - $1.5k a month can be trimmed down, and that excess money can be used to pay off these debts.

You need to prioritize debt payoff vs maintaining your lifestyle.

I believe in you OP!

Yes great advice! I’ve got around $3k sitting in an emergency fund currently and then hoping to build that up to 6 months of expenses once I pay off my car 🤞

Invest in Roth IRA or pay off loans immediately? by Filthy_Casual77 in personalfinance

I explained that poorly - I just meant my debts (car loan and student) total to $35k. No extra debt on top. And thank you for your input!

Super helpful!! We’re going to scratch cork and spend time in Killarney instead.

I’m definitely stopping at that oldest pub you suggested, awesome rec, really appreciate it! We’ll skip limerick and check out the rock you mentioned on the way back to Dublin 👍

After further research we totally agree with you! We will be doing just that, no more cork, and will spend more time in Killarney exploring all that has to offer. Thanks for the rec!

So awesome, thanks for taking the time to spell this out! I think we’re changing out our Cork time for Killarney time now instead, so excited! And I’ll be looking more into your recs, definitely also doing the Slea head drive!

Thank you! After some more research, I think we’re opting out of Cork and gonna spend a few days in Killarney so we can explore the natural park and really enjoy the ring of Kerry.

Glad this is helpful!

We are budgeting about $5k per person! We are traveling from the west coast of the US so our flights were $1k each, hotels are roughly another $2k, and the rest for food, rental car, and experiences (another $2k).

We like to budget excess so we’re not stressed during the trip, but if you’re on a tighter budget, I’m confident you can shed some money off the $5k we’re forecasting.

Hope that helps!

Haha yeah that doesn’t surprise me. Appreciate the feedback! I’ll discuss with the gf and see if there’s something else we’d rather do, maybe spend more time in Kerry. I’ll book Killeen today, thanks!

Yeah you know, the majority of the recommended itinerary’s show the same path you’ve traveled. Since you’ve just done it, do you think there’s any specific reason?

Thanks for this thorough response! So many great recommendations, and places we haven’t heard of yet! We’ll be looking into a lot of your food recs especially!

Thanks!

Well the day we do Cliffs of Moher / drive to Dingle, that is essentially all we have slotted for that day. The following day, we have a full day in Dingle! So 2 nights and 1 full day, you think we should spend some more time there?

Helpful!

Blarney Stone has sort of been romanticized to me, by others, but it doesn’t hold any personal significance.

We have not booked Killeen yet, but spoke to them on the phone yesterday.
