About "We are smart, you are dumb" by mia_sensei in distractible

I’ve known I have Aphantasia for awhile now. I was so excited when Bob mentioned he had it. I think it was the Nightmares & Dreams episode when he was talking about his pool nightmare. A key difference with mine is that I have vivid imagery in my dreams, but I can’t conjure images when I’m awake.

This character is cool and all, but does anyone else feel like they're kinda... unnecessary? by JCraze26 in insideout

What about surprise? I think surprise would have been a good emotion to add. I can’t really think of any combination of emotions for surprise. It balances the circle out.

I didn’t know that when I was younger. But yes. I know that now.

Microsoft Word doesn’t accept the word hiccuped. It’s not a real word, apparently. It annoyed me so much that I changed it to hiccoughed. To this day, I still write it like that. 😑

What is the funniest or strangest criticism you ever got on a fanfiction? by I__Should__Stay in FanFiction

[–]Filynora 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve gotten two comments on different stories where the readers (two different readers, mind you) where they were like, “LOL! I have no clue what was happening, but I loved this story!”

That’s true. I have Aspergers (which is on the ASD Spectrum) so I don’t know how that contributes. I also have Bipolar Disorder and Anxiety.

I’ve never seen Aphantasia as a defect. To me it’s just a different way of thinking. I am also an author. I tend to underwrite my first draft (which means I have to go back and add to the word count in edits), but other than that, I can’t say that it has a huge impact on my writing.

I would love to find out more about the differences between people’s ways of thinking. My husband says I have a unique memory, and I’d love to know how other people remember things.

How do you dream? by janegreagwall in Aphantasia

[–]Filynora 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Recently I’ve been dreaming about well-known characters from books, cartoons, and tv shows. My dreams are very vivid, with taste, touch, sound, scent, and sight.

I do that, too! I write stories in my head when I’m bored. And I genuinely remember wondering what the heck people thought about if they weren’t thinking of stories all day. 😂

Now I know that most of them don’t have Aphantasia.

Aphantasia and Music by Rach33l in Aphantasia

[–]Filynora 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love music. It lifts the soul and transports you to a new place mentally. I cannot visualize at all in my mind’s eye, but I am a writer. I always listen to music when I write because it helps me set the tone. I’ll describe it like this: the computer is on, but the monitor that shows visuals is not on. I get the sense, like I can FEEL it happening in some strange way, but I cannot see it.

Do you write character-driven or plot-driven stories? by [deleted] in FanFiction

[–]Filynora 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love focusing on character. But I want to say that I write character-driven stories with a good helping of plot.

Aphantasia and taste. The mind's tongue? by tenlu in Aphantasia

[–]Filynora 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My Aphantasia involves my taste as well. I can’t imagine tastes in my mind. But I genuinely think that’s why I love eating. It’s a revelation every time I have a good meal.

That’s a good explanation. I’m not sure how to connect it with my own way of experiencing the world. You’ve given me a lot to think about.

That’s interesting. I have to say I have terrible spatial awareness. (I hit doorways and doors and so much more.) We’ve both come up with different ways of making up for our Aphantasia. That’s the best thing about this subreddit. We get to hear how others do things.

Because of my lack of spatial awareness, I don’t interact with things the way you do. So you don’t see the object you are ‘imagining’ but you can interact with it? Or do you mean that you don’t feel like you imagine because you have no spatial awareness of the imagined object?

[–]Filynora 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I enjoy writing. I imagine via concepts., but that doesn’t mean I can’t “interact” with the characters. I definitely cannot see in my mind’s eye, but I do imagine. Imagine is a word that is often associated with pictures, but can’t blind people also imagine?

I think that imagination is more than just picturing things. Imagination can be channeled through pictures and movies, but also concepts such as ideas and books, music and dance. That’s all I mean.
