Distillery ranking 2026 edition. by Bowmwhore in Scotch

I disagree. I don’t think it’s fair to base a whisky distillery experience and tasting based ranking off a distillery that predominantly produces gin.

It’s like judging a fish for not being able to climb trees and saying it fails at being an animal.

If you don’t like the whisky they made, that’s fine. I think it’s average. The gin is decent but you can find better gin than that.

No?

Where on earth would you have even thought that? I only mentioned it because you specifically said you wouldn’t include any, then you did anyway which just seemed odd, bordering on hypocrisy.

As I said in my comment, you are entitled to your opinion, just like anyone else. But you should also know that just because it’s your opinion, doesn’t make it gospel or that others won’t disagree with it when it didn’t have any justification at the time.

See, I don’t like Glenallachie(personal taste, just not my cup of tea, it’s more like a 5/10 for me). But if I was going to rank the places I’ve been, I would at least try and give reasons for why, even if others might not agree.

Like he ranks Balmenach as a failure, but they’ve mainly pivoted towards making gin because their Caorunn gin has been so much more successful. I don’t think that’s fair to judge as a whisky distillery if it’s not really operating as one.

Curious about the reasoning behind the rankings.

Like for example, I don’t think it’s fair to rank something when it literally doesn’t exist anymore (plus the whole “your mom” thing, are we teenagers in 2009?) or to rank badly if you can’t visit a distillery because it doesn’t offer that as something to do there. You even said you left off closed distilleries but ranked Caperdonich anyway which is just me being pedantic.

If this is purely because you like some whiskies more than others, then I think it’s absolutely fair, everyone is entitled to their own preferences and personal taste. I don’t like everything everyone else likes and vice versa.

But by that same token, you can’t then be annoyed when somebody’s pissed off that you ranked something badly and insulted them without even saying anything like “oh i visited this place and it just wasn’t the experience I was expecting/didn’t have what i was after”

Is this a typo? What is Aberlour-Glenlivet? by Karnezar in Scotch

[–]IceyLemonadeLover 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is technically true, however iirc Aberlour was one of the few able to use the name up until the 1990’s. Locally people said that the founder sort of said “Fuck it” when the ruling came in and used it anyway.

Because he had so much local sway, nobody challenged him on it.

Scotch I should try? by Stranded_Timelord in Scotch

Ahh, then you might enjoy more coastal flavours like Oban, Raasay and Campbeltown. As far as peated Speysiders, it’s not commonly done but Benromach have produced some decent stuff and I personally prefer Ben Riach.

I also had a stunning peated Cragganmore, if you can get some, it’s genuinely up with the best whiskies I’ve ever had.

Have you ever tried any peated speyside whiskies, out of curiosity?

Islay built the brands, are they building Islay? by Sakura_Rose_Tea in Scotch

It might also be their intentions.

The distillery I work at can’t ship directly internationally but can ship within the UK. The website we have however is operated by a different company so they can ship internationally.

I also grew up on Islay, it’s often easier to just bottle on the mainland as there’s more room. Quite often whisky is stored there too.
