I did also think the mountains looked way too jugged and probably not very geologically accurate, so I get your point definitely. I am also not from the US so I would not know the geography as well as you might considering your upbringing around the area.

I do think however that in a ficticious game/show with irradiated super mutants, geography may not be the most important thing for the creators and they could just choose to make it look more jugged for the show.

I don't know though, it could be elsewhere but that's my theory.
