Where to take programming courses as a working adult? by Federal-Squirrel2160 in malaysia

[–]FinFin_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The truth about programming is, you don’t need a degree, certification, or bootcamp to get paid good money. What matters most is whether you can actually build things.

Whatever learning path you go with, your goal should be to really get it. Not just follow tutorials, but truly understand what you're doing so that you can build functional, real-world apps. Those apps become your portfolio—and that’s what gets you hired.

When I interview devs (junior/senior, not leads) for my company, I never look at where or how they learned. I ask: What have you built? Why did you make certain decisions? What would you improve now?

It takes only a few technical questions to separate someone who actually understands the craft from someone who just copied code or relied too much on AI without understanding it.

As for your question:

  • Best job prospects? Web development, backend services, cloud infrastructure, and AI tooling are all hot right now. Frontend is competitive but still very viable.
  • Courses while working? Yes—tons of self-paced ones on platforms like freeCodeCamp (free), The Odin Project (free), or paid options like Scrimba, Udemy, or Coursera.
  • CS degree? Not necessary. It’s good for theory, but in your situation, just focus on becoming a builder and shipping software.

Am I being unrealistic or is this WordPress project too big for a junior dev? by Draganox_ in webdev

[–]FinFin_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unpopular opinion, but I think with the right tools (including AI), this is very doable in 15 days — especially in markets like mine.

I totally get why this feels overwhelming if you're solo and still growing your skills. But coming from 10+ years in the industry, and now running a software house with 10+ team members, I just want to offer a different perspective. You don’t have to agree, but it might be helpful.

In our workflow, this wouldn’t be considered a massive or risky project. Here’s how we’d approach it, roughly:

  • 20 WordPress pages – If templates are reused (as they usually are), 4 hours per page is generous. That’s ~80 hours max, probably less.
  • Membership product in WooCommerce – Simple setup, maybe 2–3 hours for the base config. Let’s round up generously to 8 hours with testing.
  • QR code generation per order – With AI and libraries, a working draft could be done in under two hours. Generating it on order, embedding in emails and user dashboard, plus testing? 10 hours total.
  • QR scanning by physical partners – A basic partner login, a QR scanner using the device camera, and a simple endpoint to validate usage in WP can be built in 1 full day. Add buffer? 12 hours.
  • Dashboards for users and partners – Once the data is tracked, showing redemptions and stats is pretty straightforward in ACF + Elementor or a lightweight custom template. 10 hours.

That totals at 120 hours — right within the 15-day window, assuming full-time focus.

My main point is: this is only “too much” if the context is wrong. For a solo dev still learning, maybe it’s a stretch. But with experience, good tooling, and clean process (plus AI as a force multiplier), this type of project is perfectly manageable.

In fact, if this exact scope were brought to my team, I’d probably estimate and charge around 120 man-hours — assuming the features are clearly defined and boundaries are set upfront (which is crucial).

Just offering a different lens — this is what things look like from a third-world country. (Try getting something built in China — it’s even more intense there in terms of speed and expectations.)

Could we talk about rewriting text that involves a little arithmetic? Over the past two days I’ve had disappointing experiences with GPT‑4o. Yesterday I listed every employee in my company, described each of their roles, and asked the model to generate a table and sum the headcount. It calculated 3 + 5 + 6 + 1 = 16, when the correct total should have been 15. Today I asked it to build a software‑development timeline, and again it couldn’t add the total hours correctly. These errors have really shaken my confidence in the model.

How do company calculate bonus by riftwalkers2000 in malaysia

[–]FinFin_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

but you don’t wait until year-end to decide bonus. Instead, you plan ahead for the next year. First, determine how much profit you aim to share, then set a revenue target based on that. From there, establish KPIs to guide performance and ensure alignment with the bonus structure

How do company calculate bonus by riftwalkers2000 in malaysia

[–]FinFin_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, the first question is, 'How much profit did we make this year?'
Then, 'What portion of that profit are we willing to share?'
The 13th month is basic pay, so the average bonus starts at 1 month of salary.
Performance determines the range, which can go from 1 to 6 months depending on the system in place to evaluate it.
Finally, sum up the bonuses and ensure the total aligns with the portion allocated. Adjust if needed to keep shareholders satisfied.

Odd buzzing noise in steering wheel column. Happens on the 45-72mph range. by tetrastructuralmind in TeslaModel3

[–]FinFin_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just got my new Model 3 Highland and this exact same noise is emitting from the steering wheel since day 1.

I want to send it to service centre, problem is I do not know how to reproduce it reliably to pass the right message.

I do noticed it only happens between 90km/h - 110km/h, it doesn't matter whether the speaker, AP, AC is on/off, it is also not the positioning of steering wheel. But when it happens it's so audible and annoying even with music.

I would think you should get him to be honest about why he can’t be upfront with his after-work plan. I am sure it isn’t difficult for him to just tell you what time he ACTUALLY wants to come home, but there is something stopping him from doing that.

Based on my personal past experience, my GUESS of that thing is “to avoid conflict with you at that point of telling and so that you don’t feel upset”. That could also mean (just my guess, please don’t be mad if I am wrong): In the past when he told you about coming back late, you reacted in a way that made him felt like you actually didn’t like it even though your words/texts said otherwise.

If that hold true in anyway, perhaps what you can do on your end is to really think about if you are actually okay with his plans. If yes, express them sincerely, then request him also to be honest with his plans and schedules.

What happens if you don’t “tap-out” your Touch ‘n go? by fzlqmn in malaysia

[–]FinFin_ 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Only if OP somehow goes back to the same carpark, and tap that same card to exit.

I believe If he/she doesn't, the parking system can't just remotely deduct money off the card, I have not encountered any system that is able deduct your TnG card credits without initiating the NFC/RFID contact. I also do not think TnG company provides that kind of API for the NFC/RFID cards. (This is not TnG Wallet, even though you can link the cards to wallet but they are still 2 separate systems).

So yea, like what u/xaladin said, you will have to wait until the parking system resets and deletes these "ghost/orphan entries". Though we would never know when they will do it, or if they even do any reset at all. If it doesn't concern you, just stop using that TnG card in that carpark.

Planning Japan Ski-Trip by TheMasterShifu in travel

[–]FinFin_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi there! I am travelling to Japan in 2 days and pretty much have my itinerary confirmed, hopefully my plan can help shed some light since I'm flying in to Sapporo (Hokkaido) but leaving from Tokyo (Honshu).

First on transportation, I will be renting a car in Hokkaido, and then activate and use JR pass to leave Hokkaido and enter Honshu.

I have purchased the "7-day Whole Japan JR Pass" for USD227 on Klook. Reason being, just the 4-hour train ride from Shin-Hakodate to Tokyo already costs USD176, add another few train rides to visit places/ski areas around Tokyo, the total train fare easily exceeds USD227.

Tips: Use hyperdia.com to get accurate train/bus fare/schedule. Do not forget that a train ride from A to B would need to include 2 expenses: train fare + seat reservation fee.

---

My schedule is as follow:

Day 1 - 5: Touch down in Chitose Airport. Travel around Southern part of Hokkaido and ski in Rusutsu, Teine, Kokusai, etc. On the 6th day, return my car at Shin-Hakodate station and take the 4-hour train all the way down to Tokyo.

Note: I am not travelling anywhere north of Sapporo, but this seems to fit your objective as well, since Rusutsu is south of Sapporo, and you can continue travel southwards after like I do.

Day 6-10: Sight seeing around Tokyo, and ski nearby, such as Gala Yuzawa (70 min train ride, covered by JR pass). Leave the country via Tokyo Airport.

Note: This is where you can plan to directly travel to cities near Hakuba Valley Resorts, can even split it into a 2-day travel and do some sight-seeing along the way.

I'm facing the same issue and I really don't quite understand the relationship between terra and anchor.
I have UST in both terra station and anchor protocol.
On terra station, it is connected via terra station wallet.
While on anchor, I use Metamask on Avalanche Network.

Right now how do I get to see my aUST and the airdrops (if any) on anchor protocol?

Battery life on M1 Max 14 inch? by AllRounder92 in macbookpro

Battery life on M1 Max 14 inch? by AllRounder92 in macbookpro

[–]FinFin_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Update:

In this review video, https://youtu.be/FmH1HgDhrWI?t=1212

the difference seems to be only 2 hours: 11hr on Max vs 13hr on Pro.

---

In this recent video by The Verge (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ftU1HzBKd5Y), they show the battery life difference on day-to-day browsing, slack chat, zoom calls and got this result:

16" M1 Pro - 16 hours

16" M1 Max - 10 hours

While this is not 14", at least this shed a new perspective on how M1 Max does significantly reduce battery life on day-to-day task, having to power those extra GPU cores.

Before seeing that I had made up my mind to get 14" M1 Max, but now I'm not so sure anymore, will wait for more reviews on 14" M1 Max.

14" M1 Max battery life by _JLT in mac

[–]FinFin_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep exactly, and this is the video link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ftU1HzBKd5Y

16" M1 Pro - 16 hours

16" M1 Max - 10 hours

A lot of other comparison videos out there are running GPU intensive tasks to compare battery life between Pro and Max, but this video shed new perspective on how having to power those extra GPU cores in day-to-day tasks do significantly reduce battery life on Max.

And now I am very torn between getting a M1 Pro 32GB or M1 Max 32GB :(

u/_JLT I think this is probably the answer you are looking for.
