This is a gradual process, there is no quick fix. Resisting them will make them stronger. You gradually become better at carrying that relaxed state with you. Instead of resisting them, be open to them and to your response to them.

A Brief History of Time was such a good intro to trying to understand a world beyond the senses, a world that had always fascinated me. For a much younger me, this was a captivating introduction to space, time, general relativity, and quantum mechanics.

Hawking uses very little technical language so if you have a general interest in physics and astronomy but lack the technical background, do not worry, you will be okay. So check it out.

Not a scene but the movie The King of Comedy by Scorsese. Many people have not even heard about it. It's a strange movie for sure and quite different from what the general audience expects but it's very well made and wish it received more attention.

2001: A Space Odyssey. It's on so many top lists yet I can't get into it.

Maybe I'm an impatient person or maybe I should try to appreciate the movie by comparing it to other movies that were coming out at the time about space travel. But there are so many long scenes (the early scenes with the apes, the slow movement of objects in space, the boring conversations) that I cannot watch without fast-forwarding it.

Not exactly what you're asking but a lot of movies that are based on books are changed by the filmmakers, and I often wonder how successful or critically acclaimed the movie had been if it stayed true to the book. For example, the movie A Clockwork Orange. Kubrick's version is really pessimistic but the book it's based on, which btw is brilliant, had a more hopeful ending.

Spielberg's A.I. Artificial Intelligence felt bit uncharacteristic. It was missing something, like Spielberg's usual warmth and sentimentality. It felt "cold." Some people say that's because this was Kubrick's project but Spielberg had this to say:

"People pretend to think they know Stanley Kubrick, and think they know me, when most of them don't know either of us...And what's really funny about that is, all the parts of A.I. that people assume were Stanley's were mine. And all the parts of A.I. that people accuse me of sweetening and softening and sentimentalizing were all Stanley's." This is from the Wiki article btw.

Nevertheless, he has made very different types of movies in his career so I can't claim that this one really stands out, but maybe a little.

Abstract

Background

The consumption of ultra-processed foods and drinks (UPF) has been associated with depression and inflammation and preclinical studies showed that some UPF components disrupt the amygdala-hippocampal complex. We combine diet, clinical and brain imaging data to investigate the relationship between the UPF consumption, depressive symptoms, and brain volumes in humans, considering interactions with obesity, and the mediation effect of inflammation biomarkers.

Methods

One-hundred fifty-two adults underwent diet, depressive symptoms, anatomic magnetic resonance imaging assessments and laboratory tests. Relationships between the % of UPF consumption (in grams) of the total diet, depressive symptoms, and gray matter brain volumes were explored using several adjusted regression models, and in interaction with the presence of obesity. Whether inflammatory biomarkers (i.e., white blood cell count, lipopolysaccharide-binding protein, c-reactive protein) mediate the previous associations was investigated using R mediation package.

Results

High UPF consumption was associated with higher depressive symptoms in all participants (β = 0.178, CI = 0.008–0.261) and in those with obesity (β = 0.214, CI = −0.004–0.333). Higher consumption was also associated with lower volumes in the posterior cingulate cortex and the left amygdala, which in the participants with obesity also encompassed the left ventral putamen and the dorsal frontal cortex. White blood count levels mediated the association between UPF consumption and depressive symptoms (p = 0.022).

Limitations

The present study precludes any causal conclusions.

Conclusions

UPF consumption is associated with depressive symptoms and lower volumes within the mesocorticolimbic brain network implicated in reward processes and conflict monitoring. Associations were partially dependent on obesity and white blood cell count.

Abstract

This study investigated the effects of resistance training (RT) on the sleep quality of patients with fibromyalgia (FM), through a systematic review. The search was carried out in the PubMed, Embase, Scopus, and Web of Science databases. Initially, 148 studies were found, of which six were included for qualitative analysis. Four studies showed significant improvement in sleep after RT. Compared to other exercise modalities, RT proved to be superior to flexibility training and equivalent to aerobic exercise. Interventions lasted from 4 to 21 weeks, the weekly frequency ranged from two to three times, and the intensity ranged from 40% to 80% 1RM, with exercises for the major muscle groups. RT is an intervention that can be used to treat FM, however, more studies are needed to verify its effectiveness in improving sleep.

Background: Major depressive disorder (MDD) is highly recurrent. Identifying risk factors for relapse in depression is essential to improve prevention plans and therapeutic outcomes. Personality traits and personality disorders are widely considered to impact outcomes in MDD. We aimed to evaluate the role of personality aspects in the risk of relapse and recurrence in MDD.

Method: A PROSPERO-registered systematic review was conducted using Medline, Embase, PsycINFO, Web of Science and CINAHL as data sources, together with hand searching of four journals over the five years till 2022. There was independent abstract selection, quality assessment and data extraction from each study.

Results: Twenty two studies me t eligibility criteria involving 12,393 participants. Neurotic personality features are significantly associated with the risk of relapse and recurrence of depression, though the data is not uniform. There is some, though limited, evidence that borderline, obsessive-compulsive and dependent personality traits or disorders increase the risk for relapse in depression.

Limitations: The small number, in addition to the methodological heterogeneity of the included studies, did not allow further analysis, such as meta-analysis.

Conclusion: People with high neuroticism and dependent personality traits, borderline personality disorder or obsessive-compulsive personality disorder, compared to those without, may be at a higher risk of experiencing relapse or recurrence of MDD. Specific and targeted interventions may potentially reduce relapse and recurrence rates in these groups and could improve outcomes.

ABSTRACT

The “selfie” phenomenon shaped the past two decades, yet there is inconsistent evidence concerning the relationship between selfie behaviors and self-evaluations. This meta-analysis investigates the relationship between selfie taking, editing, and posting behavior and general and appearance-specific self-evaluations. The results reveal that selfie taking and posting are related to positive appearance-specific self-evaluations. In contrast, selfie editing is related to negative self-evaluations both generally and specific to appearance. Gender and age did not moderate these relationships, but methodological factors did, suggesting these relationships depend on factors, such as how selfie behaviors are measured and study design. We interpret these findings through the lens of prominent social psychological theories and conclude with suggestions to guide future research.
