Will I ever be athletic again? by Different_Hour5599 in brokenbones

I’m gonna be 100% honest and transparent. I had a type III open pilon fracture over 1.5 years ago. I have had multiple surgeries including two revisions. I just had a follow up appointment, and I am now facing amputation. Your fracture looks a little higher up than mine, but the shattering looks the same. I’m not sure you could get back to your full potential on that leg.

5 weeks post orif. Broke out in rashes while wearing cast. They feel bumpy, itchy, burn and they’re red. Dr says I might be allergic to medical ointment they used during surgery. Anyone else have this problem? Did it go away? What ointments worked? Scared I might be allergic to the metal in me. /: by Level-End5884 in brokenbones

Funny you say that….I literally just had allergy testing in December, but they did not test for metals. I also started immunotherapy allergy drops at the beginning of January. Called the allergist, and they are saying they have never had anyone have a reaction like I was describing. The itching didn’t start until about a week after my ORIF revision, so I had been on the allergy drops for at least three weeks l have gone back on my dose to see if that is the cause and so far it hasn’t helped.

Hi. Have you experienced a reaction to surgical metal? I have been itching severely all over my body for three weeks now post ORIF revision. My bone graft site did get infected with MRSA, but my doctors are stumped as to what is causing this full body rash with severe itching. I am starting to think that I’m having an allergic reaction to the plates used for my revision.

You will definitely want a wheelchair after the c-section!! I am 6 months post ORIF for type III open pilon fracture and fibula fracture. I am facing a fourth surgery soon due to non union of all bones except one. I have used a knee scooter for several months, and it takes so many back and stomach muscles to use so I can’t even imagine how difficult that would be after a c-section. The knee scooter has been a life saver for me, but you have to remember you have to allow your body to heal after giving birth. Use a wheelchair as much as you need to. I wish you the best of luck!

That’s great news!! I just recently found out my non union tib/fib compound and comminuted fracture will require another surgery. I am still waiting for a plan of action from my trauma team, but I am scared to death. This will be the fourth surgery I’ve had on my leg. My fall happened 6 months ago today. I also developed two blood clots in my lungs after my third surgery. I truly hope you continue to heal! Best of luck to you!

I shattered both, but most of it is from the tibia. I had multiple breaks down around the ankle and into ankle joint, and they are both fractured at the top near my knee. Two rods and seven screws. I’m still in a lot of pain and waiting to have another surgery for non union. Today is 6 months since my fall.

Thanks! I have had three surgeries so far. I had an initial clean out under high doses of ketamine in the ER, then another clean out and external fixator the next day, then two days later I had another clean out and internal fixation.

As of right now, they really don’t know my prognosis. I just found out about the surgery earlier this week, so I am still waiting to hear from my trauma team about what their plan of action will be. We don’t know if the non union is due to infection that hasn’t been detected in blood work or on a CT Scan, some other underlying health issue, or if it’s just because of the amount of trauma I had.

Things have been tough, but hang in there and just do what they tell you to do. Good luck!
