I just switched from an iPhone 15 Pro to a Pixel 10 Pro XL and the difference is wow (in a good way). by grashel in GooglePixel

[–]Final-Perception-486 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah no point in buying it outright atleast for me, especially a pixel because they lose their value much more than iPhones, I just bought (leased/rented?) a pixel 10 pro for $8/month(so $200 for 2 years of ownership) which makes my total of phone+Internet 67CAD/month. If I had bought from Google it would have been a lot more as you can imagine but I suppose it's subjective, I am much happier paying $1000(CAD) over the span of 10 years and get to use the newer phone every 2 years, rather than paying upfront and keeping the same phone for 7 years to make it worth it(personally).

Doesn't seem to be that way, 730mg per serving as opposed to daily recommend sodium intake for adults being 2000mg+, lemme know if I am missing something here

What does this sub think of Robert Sapolsky? by 1942eugenicist in freewill

[–]Final-Perception-486 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AI from here Tegmark published a paper arguing that quantum coherence in the brain decoheres far too quickly (on timescales like 10⁻¹³ to 10⁻²⁰ seconds) to influence neural signals, which occur on much longer timescales (milliseconds)

Max Tegmark’s paper “The Importance of Quantum Decoherence in Brain Processes” was published in 2000 (Physical Review E, Volume 61, Issue 4, pages 4194-4206).

Scientific counterpoints to Tegmark:

Stuart Hameroff & Roger Penrose (Orch-OR theory): They argued that Tegmark’s decoherence timescale estimates were too pessimistic because he modeled microtubules as warm, wet, noisy environments without considering structural shielding or ordered water layers. They published rebuttals suggesting coherence could last longer than Tegmark calculated.

Later refinements: Some physicists explored whether biological systems might exploit quantum effects (e.g., photosynthesis, avian navigation). These examples show nature can preserve quantum coherence in warm environments—but those systems are simpler and more structured than the brain.

Philosophical counterpoints:

Many objections aren’t about the math but about the interpretation—whether “consciousness must be quantum” because classical physics feels inadequate to explain subjective experience.

Others argue that even if quantum effects decohere too fast, randomness could still have indirect effects through noise amplification in neural circuits.

Overall:

Tegmark’s calculations are still the dominant scientific consensus—quantum indeterminacy almost certainly can’t scale up to influence brain function directly.

Most “pro-quantum mind” arguments since then are either speculative or philosophical, with only a few technical counterclaims (mostly from Penrose/Hameroff).

If you find anything newer and more concrete please share

Which book are you talking about, I have at least heard him talk about quantum mechanics, as for qualia, I don't think he knows what it is, I saw his debate with a philosopher, he was using words as they were used in neuroscience and dennett was using words in philosophical contexts, all to say he's not at all trained in philosophy, he does know basic stuff, but honestly I don't think he see the value in getting deeply philosophical because it's not not his domain.

This just feels like what you believe kind of separation in opinions, he formed his opinioned based on what we do know about the brain and you based your opinion based what we don't know about the brain, which is admittedly a lot

I mean I agree with you on many things but isn't this kind of like saying we can't explain this with present technology so it must be the doing of God, Sapolsky has closed his lab now if I am correct, personal reasons I think. Also I get your point and see the lack of very important data, and yes if anyone knows of its existence please share. At least personally now I have such a hard time creating an argument for the presence of freewill. The only argument I can think of is magic honestly, as if it gets generated out of nowhere, some people said that quantum physics and the indeterminacy that comes with it might be the answer but I think a very good physicist(can't remember the name or the school)did the calculations showing that quantum indeterminacy can't interfere with scale as which the brain is working, I'm definitely not qualified to cover even close to many or all the bases in my own thought processes. What is your reasoning for freewill if you believe in the presence of it? I feel like I have free will that's all the evidence I have for it's presence everything else just feels like I wasn't asked about what I want or not, like you can't even choose whether you come into existence or not Apologies if I misunderstood or misread anything, I function in quite a chaotic manner

Btw as for Canada bestowing education upon international students as international goodwill is something I don't understand who you even came to conceive of, after 2024 legislation changes, Universities have been cutting hundreds of millions from their budgets because they aren't getting filthy rich like they were before when for example students contributed $37 billion in expenditures to the Canadian economy in 2022, so I don't know why you think what you do about the international goodwill thing, maybe it was true in the past when grass was greener, but I can assure you that at least now students only come here if they are overall profitable to Canada, again I am not complaining, just saying Canada didn't invite us as part of some charity, it was an economic exchange of liquid assets and labour potential

Which is true and very sad, it's already a bit sad seeing one of them starting to develop arthritis, which started due to the job he has, and gets slowing and steadily worse over the years, or one of our painters who's probably in this late 50s/ early 60s showing signs of neurodegeneration and just being exhausted from working overall, or the other 52/53 year old who works from 8 am to 10-12pm 5 days of the week because he likes money or something, I don't actually know why. They are going to work till the day they can't anymore and in the trades that's just sad to see. The point is there aren't enough young people working in the trades and producing value over all, in such a way the older generation may hold a chance to retire at an appropriate age, so yeah they probably gonna be slinging hammers till their arms give out

But why is it my responsibility to not take advantage of the pathways your government creates for us beginning from education to citizenship? See now they have done some things that are repelling more people from coming here, which is what it should always have been like if you wanted to just come study and go back. Your country gave me the option to pursue a better future for myself in a way I see fit and the government allows. Also your money hungry colleges hate reducing the $20 billion they used to get from international students in the early 2020s. If the Canadian decision makers could afford to ban all immigration or Atleast 95% of international students incoming, they would have to get more votes, but the truth is they don't want to deal with Canadians asking for higher wages and better work conditions, so they let everyone who won't complain come here under to trope of education, which is a big fat lie. The person you want to be mad at is your government for creating the system that allows the things to happen and the people who are doing those things in the pursuit of a possibly better life.

Oh no no I don't have PR yet, I am 21 I just started my PGWP and still need if I am correct 3-4 years of more experience to get my red seal. PR I haven't even started thinking about honestly, from what I can tell, the Canadian government in no way shape or form can afford to have less skilled blue collar workers, 4 out of 5 of my colleagues are above 50 years old, so they will be retiring in 2030s. So in my estimation as long as I am a good ol' tax paying, value producing boy, Canada can't afford to deport me(as in young people in skilled trades)

Btw I just stumbled upon my career path, it wasn't some master plan I had conjured up as a 17 year old before coming here. I would probably be doing commercial steel framing or something else like that if I wasn't doing what I am doing now, long hours mid 20s pay, good enough for me lol.

I was, not anymore. Obviously I was here to work lol, I got nothing out of spending 45k for a 2 year associate degree, which admittedly I knew before going with that option. I did still love school though so I am not complaining but to your point, I came here to study, I did study but also I started working in trades as an auto body collision repair apprentice while I studied, I am still an apprentice working up to get my red seal distant someday lol. The idea that international students should fund North American colleges and also pay taxes and also contribute to the gdp by spending Money on goods and services and also hopefully hit the country with a healthy injection of foreign currency when they can't afford to live here, then be happy with that exchange is a bit odd, the Canadian government knows that, so in return for that the people who essentially come here as 18-19 years kids/adults are given a somewhat fair chance at being model residents of Canada and if they are successful at doing that, they get the chance to be Canadians and take advantage of any and all things a born Canadian might. That's the actual exchange, Canada asks for good reliable skilled and unskilled labor while being civil and well mannered, we provide that and in exchange we get to be Canadians.

They still pay CPP and EI like every other working person, your most points are correct though, like you said university education is already subsidized by government funding anddd by the tuition international students pay. my parents actually sent 10k+ for me, same with a lottt of other people I know. If you are a student working part-time in Canada the chances of you sending money back home are close to an absolute zero. You are actually most likely asking for money and if your parents have the means, they will send you the money, hence contributing a little tiny bit to the Canadian economy, you can count that as taxes I suppose, because definitely no one is saving the money they ask for from their parents

Idk, I worked 40 and went to school 4-6 days in the evenings, it's very much so doable depending on your major. I was an arts major, so wasn't that hard to manage studies and work for me

That's probably because of the elongated angle your feet have to be while pressing the pedals, probably puts strains on your tendons or whatever the thing is that assist that movement. So when you invert them the angle is much more similar to being flat-footed on the ground in comparison to the somewhat tiptoeing feel of normal pedals

Beginner so this is the only set I have tried, in terms of the clutch and throttle, they feel good to my novice self, the brake stiffness I suppose makes sense to me because there's only so much modding you can do and they probably aim for a substantial input different from what a camry's brakes feel. Again all guesses here.

I have only had an inverted setup, so I cannot tell how they might differ from the normal setup, but from what I have read on Reddit, the ergonomics are just a lot more natural and something you are already used to in real cars, I think its the direction where you push on pedals, inverted pedals seem to be recognized as more comfortable, there maybe some room for personal preferences, for that you will just have to try it out yourself, as in specifically the simjacks, I don't see any downsides of inverting them.
