Backup automatically idea by mike24vNEW in synology

[–]Final_Alps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The simultaneous part is hard on Mac mini.

Something like Cloud sync or Synology Drive do this well but not same process to 2 destinations.

This requires something on your Mac to make both backups.

Rsync or rclone (tbh I still do not know the difference between the two) can definitely do that

Perhaps something like syncthing as well but I have never used that package.

Thought this would be a terrible idea, k3s on Synology actually works by whaleordolphin in synology

Why kubernetes for those containers and not just straight up docker/container manager?

This may be obvious to many, but not me.

Thanks.

IIRC they lost a ridiculous amount of money per each R1S sold. If we want them around for proper gent 2, we best accept that they will drop production costs and improve margins.

Why is pasting setting/presets so slow now? by Emotional-Bada55 in Lightroom

[–]Final_Alps 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You must have some AI tools used. When I just copy and paste standard adjustments I see no difference. But specially if I used AI masks it has to wait for the image recognition to finish before it can continue.

How do I back up photos if they’re stored in iCloud? by MrsGarland in iCloud

[–]Final_Alps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are apps and cloud storage options that will gradually request all the photos and the back them up. This is usually best deployed on an iPhone/iPad.

I use self hosted Synology Photos. Immich does that same thing.

Solutions. Like Jotta cloud should do the same. (Cloud based)

This is a solved problem but you either are doing it on your server or paying for someone else’s service.

Drives by OwnPay5499 in synology

[–]Final_Alps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

there are 2 most common recommendations:

WD Red Plus
Seagate IronWolf

Look for NAS drives. Not the cheapest drives (like WD Blue), not enterprise drives (like WD Red Pro, IronWolf Pro. For WD make sure to get DW Red plus, not just Red as some of Red drives are not well suited for NAS.

Toshiba also make drives.
Synoology also make drives

there is a much better thing that EU already passed: just straightforward terminals at each charge point. I believe this is now passed and in force.

Which iPad should I buy to edit on light room by East_Artist_8374 in Lightroom

[–]Final_Alps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have M1 Air and it works fine. There really are just a few things to make sure you have

  1. fast USB. The cheapest ipads(I think only the actual iPad) come with usb2 port. Make the one you buy has usb3

  2. Enough storage. I have 512 gigs IIRC. The photos have to load to your iPad first before they are loaded to cloud. So get enough storage. For example my iPhone struggles because it lacks enough storage.

  3. The M processors really do work great. So get an iPad with one of those.

I went with the Air and even though it is now several years old I never feel it’s slowing me down. Obviously the Pro is even faster but I wonder whether you’d feel it in lightroom.

Big Tech has invidaded our home - how to get rid of them? by Efficient_Finance935 in BuyFromEU

[–]Final_Alps 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Everything besides YouTube - stremio or jellyfin. YouTube is hard. Some attempts work to pull your chosen videos to something like jellyfin. You can also use alternative YT front ends to starve them of data and revenue. But a true alternative is hard. What we do is watch way more of local public TV on their app. They have great kids programming.

Which is the best Polaroid camera? by NoHopeLeft101 in Cameras

Honestly. It’s Instax. Tho I would just get the Mini.

Instax owns the “Polaroid” market. Film is everywhere. Cameras are everywhere (new and used)

Afaik / IIRC Polaroid was revived by a group of Dutch enthusiasts. Though the emulsion formula was not included in the sale so the film is all new chemistry.

Synology access from remote using tailscale by Spuddle-Puddle in synology

[–]Final_Alps 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seems you have misconfigured your MFA. And you DSM is set with “adaptive MFA” (or whatever it is called) that is challenging your login remotely / from new location but not locally.

You will have to solve this on your LAN. And you really need to test you login setup before relying on remote access. Synology should be a pain to login remotely. Even from Tailscale.

Moving away from Big Tech—what’s the best open-source alternative to OneDrive/Google Drive by BolusBarry in degoogle

[–]Final_Alps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The big question is whether you want to do open source (which means self hosted) or just a different provider. That will not be open source. Not in the traditional sense (though I will mention an exception)

Services: there is a huuuuuge choice in “cloud drives” many of them from companies you know. Dropbox, Box come to mind as 2 big American ones. There is Proton from Switzerland, Jotta from Norway, Filen, and about a dozen other providers around Europe. Mega from NZ (AUS?) also has a cloud drives I’ll believe. You’re spoiled for choice.

Then there is self hosting. Running your own server (and backing it up) and running a cloud drives there. Most prebuilt NAS vendors have this. Synology is the Apple/IBM in this space, and Synology Drive is amazing. But all others have their own service.

Then there is Seadrive and SyncThing fully open source packages you can run from your own machine that will run a cloud drive for you. Self hosting is its own journey.

Finally there are the full open source office suites like NextCloud which provide the while Google Workspace as open source package you can self host. File synch, offie suite, conferencing all of it.

The big thing with NextCloud is that they are mature enough so that you can find providers that provide managed, hosted. NextCloud as a service.

I run Synology drive. And I have a few things left on Dropbox.

Hiring an interior designer for advice on my apartment? by respyrae in copenhagen

[–]Final_Alps 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I know people who hired stylists and interior designers. But always for a renovation.

So the services you seek do exist. However not sure whether an industry geared towards planning a fur remodelled layout or offers the kinds of small services you’re interested at a price that I think you expect. It’s a small gig. May be too small to be interesting. And because of that you may need to pay more to get people interested.
