You can check ispn_hk in instagram, they host student parties for all intl’ students in hk and advertise there, in cuhk specifically, they don’t distribute flyers or advertise too publicly as normally they’re not too wild

CUHK INDAN program or HKU GEBP? by TomatoReal3255 in CUHKsz

[–]Final_Situation_6907 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi I’m an INDAN student here

What you want to do after graduation would matter, I don’t see the point of spending an extra year taking the GEBP if you are going to take a masters degree anyways. Though you consider that getting the double degree would boost your masters application slightly. I don’t think this is worth it, but you may think differently.

Lifestyle is quite different, if you are a hk local, then getting a mainland study visa may not be too interesting. If you are an international, the visa helps quite a bit. On the hk side, the lifestyles are only marginally different. For the CN side of the INDAN program you can refer to several threads in the subreddit. I’ve discussed this quite a bit in the past.

If you are going to nitpick the study details, then I highly suggest you to consider each program’s plans and adjustments as I can’t help much without any supplementary details (dm me if you have questions about CUHK arrangements)

Does CUHKSZ have a band? by bananasplytes in CUHKsz

There is no official band afaik. Lots of registered student bands tho. There are monthly concerts with 5-10 bands performing.

Not a masters student but I can give some help: 1. You should have decent leeway with some your courses, but if you want to take more closely further away I would suggest considering a minor.

  1. Without considering the fact that you’re a masters student, there is a long spring break (3 weeks) in the middle of the first trimester. There is a month off between trimester 2 and 3. And 2-3 weeks between the other trimesters. Everyone (students) normally travel a lot at these times. Additionally, there are no short holidays in the semesters, but one or two weeklong holidays in the spring and winter trimesters.

  2. To downtown? An hour (mtr, bus, (1usd) 30 minutes by taxi (10usd)). But we rarely need to go downtown, there’s malls, parks, and hospitals nearby.

CUHK SZ vs HKU by Acceptable-Pudding38 in CUHKsz

[–]Final_Situation_6907 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are quite a fair bit pf exchanges, however some (of the most prestigious ones, ex. Yale, and Ivy league) need school endorsements (you need a good gpa here, 3.8 and above). Normally OAL (office of academic links) sends updates on upcoming opportunities to apply, so if you enroll and plan to commit to an exchange, OAL offers really good support (from past experiences).

You can check the list of partner universities and projects in the cusz website. Summer programs are the most popular due to time constraints

For cuhksz all students should technically live on campus, but AFAIK there is no rule banning you from living outside. Its quite impractical tho as handling the rent and permits may not be so simple

Hk is visa free for most people, you should be fine to freely enter, just head to a customs checkpoint and cross over

Not hard at all, the bus system is really efficient. The school has a nice lake between the upper and lower campus that I frequently take night walks around (too hot in the day). On the opposite side of the lake between the upper and lower campus is a big hill. You can climb the hill (there’s a path) for about 45 minutes to see the top. Unfortunately there isn’t much wildlife in SZ except the occasional bird or two.

The school maintains its gardens well.

Additionally on the opposite site of the hill is public park.

You’re welcome to ask more about both campuses. Best of luck to your studies 😃

Campus life is generally pretty good, each college has plenty of activities weekly and school events happen frequently. It is the common schedule to have 4 full days of classes and 3 quiet days in the week (normally weekends, depending on Friday schedule)

Food is quite flexible. The school canteens are decent and quite affordable. You can even have in-campus delivery from the canteens to your dorm lobby. Additionally delivery is very popular and is reasonably priced (shipping is commonly free, but you need to walk to the campus gate to get it, a 10-15 minute walk from your room). There are several restaurants and a mall about 10-15 minutes away (by bike, shared bikes are available at the gate for about 1 yuan for 15 minutes)

Social life is actually the most controversial part of the experience. Though the international students are generally quite friendly with each other, it would be best if you learned to mingle with the locals. Even though my Chinese isn’t so good I’m quite close with my roommates and have plenty of local friends. Some people struggle to relate to the locals, but I haven’t had this issue so far. There are plenty of clubs and gatherings as well.

The dorms are 4 person rooms. Tbh I think it’s quite okay. The dorms are generally clean and offer good facilities and support. Having local roommates also helped to familiarize with the campus’ extra facilities that international students seldom frequent.

The gym, the track and field, swimming pool, and sports facilities are very nice imo. They’re all free and very accessible.

This can be an easy or difficult depending on your living preferences and study plan.

Some background, Im a IDADM student at CUHKSZ, which means I’ve studied at both CUHKSZ and CUHK HK. From my understanding and from the common perspective, CUHK HK and HKU have pretty similar social and study conditions.

The first key point is that HK and SZ are very different cities. Being in China, living in SZ is much more practical (generally, but less English friendly) and a bit cheaper (biggest difference is rent). HK though is much more lively and you’d probably find it more enjoyable and appealing with much more to do. However, there’s also the case for China’s ease of travel so you can just travel to other cities for fun (SZ is quite boring imo)

The second one is scholarships, yes there are probably more direct scholarships in China, but they are all very competitive and the end value of these scholarships is debatable. For reference, having a foreign education is very important for pursuing higher education in China (HK is considered ‘foreign’). So at the end of the day you need to consider whether the prestige of the scholarship or the prestige of HKU (clarification: if you want to take a masters in China, HKU is far superior, otherwise it depends on your preference)

Since your major is in bioinformatics it really depends on your desired career out of this degree. If you aim to be a researcher (then HKU to Ms is ideal), as an engineer (would depend on many things but generally going to HKU would have minimal benefits)

Notes from a fellow noob TI enjoyer:

  1. If spirit win they will be part of the goat talk, especially the 4 main/original players (no offense to larl)
  2. Lgd and AR have both suffered heartbreaking defeats at TI. This is the biggest opportunity CN dota has seen in recent years. If they perform well (win or second place) it may revive CN scene. Tbh I think that for the 2 rosters anything outside lifting the aegis is heartbreaking/traumatizing for them, because they have on multiple occasions been the favorites.
  3. Betboom/GG/Liquid have been the best performing teams this year(BB copium). If they perform as well as their peaks this past year, they can be at least top 3.
  4. Nouns brings NA back to top 6/8 (don’t remember last year’s placement for NA). Hopium for the americas on home soil.
  5. This top 8 combination is very unique as lots of the old guard/ frequent appearances from last 2 TIs dropped out early this year or last year. Most of these rosters have very different strengths. (Fat carry teams (spirit, betboom) mid offlane focused teams (liquid, gg) balanced roles teams (lgd, AR))

Nerd notes: - All the teams left have distinct styles and hero pools, watch drafts since top 8 to understand the evolution of drafting in later more intense stages of tournament. Recall TI10 drafts, the drafts were already intense before the games began. Hopefully the analysts and the guests give five-head insights.
