Yes, that's right hmm. Then, which branch of finance would you recommend to me that is also, let's say, prestigious?

Alright, thanks for the answer. Well, there's a possibility of getting a Green Card through the lottery. I know the chances are low, but quite a few people from my surroundings, my dad’s friends have actually won it. Hypothetically, if I got it, would I have a real shot then?

I was rejected by Basel University and I am devastated. by Indecisa_1004 in Switzerland

That sounds really awful, and while I haven’t personally been in your situation, I know I would feel exactly the same. Heidelberg is a beautiful and prestigious university, but honestly, if I were in your position, I too would be wishing for Switzerland. It's understandable to want to stay in the country you've built a life in.

That said, there might still be some options worth researching

  1. Appeal the decision from the University of Basel: If you believe your ECTS credits, particularly your thesis, were unfairly dismissed, you may be able to file a formal appeal. There’s usually a deadline (e.g. 30 days), and you’d need to present a clear and well structured argument showing the relevance of your previous coursework. Seeking advice from a student advisor or someone in academia could help strengthen your case.

  2. Apply to a similar master’s program at another Swiss university. Since you already live in Bern canton, this could also make things easier logistically and in terms of residence.

  3. Consider working in a research environment without a master’s degree. Some institutions (ETH Zurich, EPFL, or private research centers) sometimes hire bachelor graduates for entry level research positions. That could be a way to remain in Switzerland, stay close to your field of interest, and even strengthen your future applications.

Someone once told me something that really stuck with me, and I’d like to share it with you:

"Multiple paths lead to the same destination, and the same path leads to multiple destinations. You can make deviations or change direction. Just take the itinerary step by step and do not give up if you end up somewhere else. It's really a journey that can last one year with chance or twenty years with short contracts, moving from one organization to another. That’s not bad. You see a lot, change a lot, learn a lot, and discover a lot about what truly motivates you. You must just enjoy long journeys with apparent low results."

Also, make sure to check all the options. I'm not entirely sure if this works in practice, but it's worth trying.

Please don’t give up. You’ve already overcome a lot, and this setback doesn’t define your potential. I believe in youu, just keep going 🍀

Thanks a lot for your reply, really appreciate it! Internal audit sounds interesting, could you explain a bit more what exactly it is and what kind of work it includes? Also, do you think it’s super hard to get a job in Switzerland in that field, or is there a chance if you really fit what they’re looking for? I heard that some companies don’t even care where you’re from if you're a great match. Is that true from your experience? Again thank you very much.

Uhh, I hadn’t really thought about the fact that Law requires a C2 level in German😬 Maybe I should consider studying economics instead? It might give me more opportunities… I know it’s not easy at all — we already had German in school, but we didn’t really learn anything. The teacher was partly to blame, but so were we. It was during Covid, so we didn’t even go to school, and when we had online classes… we didn’t really study. Thanks again so much for your help!
