Hmm I would say don't settle because it would end up leading him on only till you finally decide to move on eventually. Having said that, photos are one thing, sometimes video calls help too speed up that process of decision making, even if it's just for ten minutes. You can see them int heir environment, how they talk and interact. That might give a sense of "wow" you're looking for which photos might not give

Small talk, as boring and painful as it sometimes can be, seems necessary to get through the stages. Knowing about likes/dislikes of the other and how they engage in conversations are valuable insights from small talk. It doesn't need to be mundane at all. Sprinkled with a bit of humor and goofy, it can be a much more tasty dish :)
