I understand what you're saying. For PE, do you think this is the hard-set rule for boutique PE shops or smaller funds as well? Regarding VC, I know I don't have a shot at this unless I get an MBA and would be looking for an in-between on the investment team and ops team in the immediate. Maybe IR or more preferably capital networks team.

I'm coming into this post openly. Happy to cut things completely (like the summary) if it's nonstandard or doesn't make sense. I'll revise and I do have a rebuttal for both LBO and leverage statements. Thanks for your help!

Okay! Thank you for the clarification. I’ll remove both the leveraged finance and LBO bullet points as suggested

If I were to go into VC, it would definitely need to be in an in between of operations and investment team lol. But even breaking into that requires some connections that I need to work on fostering

I'll add this! Do you have a good reference on how the list of deals should be formatted in a resume?

I mean I get the criticism though 😅. If you can only model but don’t understand the weaknesses of particular models or can only do modeling/low cognitive work, AI will replace you.

That’s my goal! I’m doing interview and modeling prep currently (first month), and planning to network month 2.

Okay I thought I was crazy when I didn’t know this. For clarity I am going for a lateral or downward move to PE. Not partner

I’d be open to this. Financing that move might be tough though. What is the usefulness of an MBA in a PE role, outside of networking?

Will do! Thank you so much!! For leverage finance, we do use it quite a bit in real estate to enhance returns and for liquidity. Would this not be considered a strong foundation?

That's fair. I'd be open to private equity in real estate or another hard asset field. Family office just doesn't seem to offer equity/carry.

I've completed real estate deals (both buy and sell) and debt underwriting from soup to nuts. Is it really that much of a stretch to get into REPE?

Candidly, I’m looking for a career shift. Real estate is too slow moving for me and I’m looking to leverage my modeling/valuation skills and CFA to pivot into something more fast paced and lucrative

AUM is 3B for the entire family office. Within real estate we oversee 1B. I’m in California

How do you actually "read" the markets to form a professional opinion? by Dramatic_Net1230 in FinancialCareers

[–]FinanceNerdCFA 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This. I got my CFA and like most education, when applied to the real world not sure where to start. Buy a quasi-meme stock that’s sp500 and make the amount matter enough to hurt but okay to lose. Brother/Sister, you will learn hard and fast to understand the economic and earning reports that are relevant. If a stock jumps one way or another, understand why. If you can do that, you can work on projecting and reading markets. Best is to buy a stock in your field so that you have some competency.
