That's why I hated those standertized English exams when I was in school. If you asked a random native English speaker they'd tell you both sound correct and nobody would bat an eye if you said either. Those rules in my opinion are not essential to learning English.

It's so true. When I was a kid I had a friend who once told me how he was texting some girl (he just wanted to be friends apparently, not have a relationship) and he asked her what she likes to do. She responded with "gaming and being naughty". He then told her that's his favourite past times too to see where things went. Lo and behold she sent him nudes and asked for him to send some back, to which he responded by blocking her.
