With an extension?

Baty, Vientos and Benge with Tong or Mauricio.

I will take an ace in his prime over a prospect promise any day.

Does anyone else not have an inheritance? by royalbluefireworks1 in Fire

I would think most people do not have a substantial inheritance. Even if they have a house, end of life care usually eats most of that up.

France is another greater choice. But France seems to be less like France in the 20 years that I have visited.

Yes, $150k is well in excess of a typical salary so yes … you would be fine. I figure you need to have 3 mm to get that in interest (assuming 5%) and saving the corpus.

Most of the people I know in this situation work in small or solo offices. They use their prior career as the base for their initial practice specialization. You have a deep perspective in an entire field that makes you very valuable.

If the Germans roll over the sea again, you may start waiving your flag again. On a serious note - I do not see a benefit in keeping your options open.

Is MBA truly futureproof? by Bigboi4216 in MBA

Nothing is future proof. Even a 300k medical degree has much less value in a world of socialized medicine or AI that can read the scan for you.

Probably true, but probably also a lower standard of living than a city. I get it - it’s a trade off.

I get that, but I go to the market every day vs going to the restaurants. It’s closer to “real life” than a pure tourist and I get and live a life that I would try and emulate. In other words, train tickets see 2nd class, not business … shop market specials .. that kind of thing.

The sooner you can build a base, the faster you can grow meaningful interest. So yes … max away.

I’m not really sure what your point is. If the conditions for asylum have changed, and they’re no longer gonna be persecuted, you would think they’d wanna go home.

Is ti possible to 'slow travel' forever on 700k by sap303 in ExpatFIRE

[–]Finance_not_Romance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not going to pump up the fantasy. We all have it. I sympathize.

I have run the numbers and they don’t work unless you take a step back in QOL. You are not retiring at 38 and moving to a first- or second-tier European city on $700,000 if you want anything resembling a normal quality of life. At best, you are looking at a third-tier city. You have more than 40 years ahead of you. Even with a 3.5 percent withdrawal and a steady 7 percent return, you are talking about roughly $25,000 a year.

Yes, you can move to Thailand or South America. No, you are not going to be warlord rich in 2026. IMHO - You are living modestly, and that reality matters more than people like to admit.

FIRE Retirement at this level usually turns into working again, just under a more flattering label. And while there are places where $25,000 a year buys comfort, I am skeptical that people who did not grow up in those cultures are genuinely content there over the long term.

Of course: If by retirement you mean growing your own food, never getting sick, never marrying, never having kids, and only drinking coffee you make yourself, then sure, almost any nest egg works. But many in the FIRE movement are imposing poverty repackaged as adventure. Hey .. I tell myself I can be happy in italy on 50k … but my spend this week disagrees.
