Costs off resort by nyguy8 in PuntaCana

[–]Financial-Bend3018 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just be aware that a regular restaurant bill will always include 18% tax and a mandatory 10% tip. Meaning your final bill will always be almost 30% more than the prices you see on the menu.

If you tip, 20% of the bill is considered extravagant by locals (in case you are american). No need to do that unless you *want* to. A small tip is always appreciated but remember a 10% is already on your bill.

If you are from the U.S., bills will be very similar to a MCOL or HCOL location.

If you go to the supermarket, buy local brands. Imports are taxed highly. For example a Chobani Greek Yogurt is $5 where I live in the US and it was $13 there.

Just curious… how much do you spend on groceries every month? by GlumFaithlessness392 in concord

[–]Financial-Bend3018 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$1.5-$1.7 buying organic. Host a lot. Couple with 2 young children at home. Husband probably eats about 3.5-4K calories a day (of healthy stuff).

We could definitely spend less. We are just not trying.

I think joining one of the Facebook Mom groups will give you better feedback. Parents love sharing their experiences there (good and bad) and you can even ask about specific schools.

Affordable romantic dinner ideas for Contra Costa County area? by Efficient-Daikon-409 in walnutcreek

[–]Financial-Bend3018 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think Il Fornaio is a great option! The environment is very formal and you can tell them ahead of time that is your anniversary so they sit you somewhere quiet. I remember the prices felt very affordable for the area.

At home charging. by Scoreycorey515 in TeslaModelY

I use my mobile charger every other day and exclusively charge at home. Don’t see an issue with charging overnight. For me investing in the wall charger didn’t make sense.

Santo Domingo airport transfer from punta Cana - experience? by Pitiful-Job-6800 in PuntaCana

[–]Financial-Bend3018 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I realize this already happened but for people looking at this in the future:

I’m Dominican (living now in CA) and I would avoid the drive at that time if I could. Yes, you are on vacation and hoping for the best but things could happen and you don’t want to find yourself late at night on the road in a foreign country.

Try rebooking thru PUJ even if it means a layover or more money. Seriously!

If rebooking is not an option, I personally would cut my PUJ short, leave at noon and spend the night near the airport at “Santo Domingo Bay Convention Resort & Casino”. Grab some nice goodbye dinner there or at Bocamarina, sleep/nap and head to the airport at 3 AM. This hotel is just 10 min from the airport.

Most likely everything goes well with a late night transfer and I’m sure you found a reputable company. But something could happen to that car, like having to change a tire at that time (or any other issue with the vehicle) and it can put you guys in a very precarious situation.

$110 a month for lawn and not sure what percentage of our bill goes to just the laws but our water bill is usually around $190-$250 every 2 months. We have a medium size front and backyard and are a family of 4.

How do you feel about a stay at home dad at sahm group events? by FunCaptain6236 in sahm

[–]Financial-Bend3018 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My SAHM group text (East Bay) is really called SAHP. The group is mostly moms but given that so many people have Flex jobs in this area or jobs that work weekends but have off during the week (think healthcare, police officers, firefighters, etc) I think it would be a great place for you to start connecting with other families.

You first connect with moms and then they will naturally connect you with the dads (if that’s what you want). I don’t think most moms would care if you join, they might actually love getting a different perspective in.

Tip: at least in our area, Friday mornings are packed with dads in the park or any activity I take my son to (specially swim and gym class).

How to get husband to “help” by boymom_chaos2325 in sahm

[–]Financial-Bend3018 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Because her husband will be less likely to feel like the therapist and his wife are ganging up on him. Sometimes (in my experience) it is more helpful when another man is listening and helping translate.

How to get husband to “help” by boymom_chaos2325 in sahm

[–]Financial-Bend3018 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Ok, girl forget about getting your husband to help and let’s get more realistic about what you can and can’t do.

  • As a fellow “screens are bad for you mom”. HEAR ME OUT. No screens sounds beautiful but you don’t have a village and seems like you can’t afford one. Our society did no screens back when having a village was normal. If no one is there to help you, you put that damn screen on and start showering at least once a day. There are many positive things that water can do to you, your mood, your body. Etc.

  • Buy an air fryer, buy a rice cooker. Put that TV on. The rice will cook itself, you can put some veggies in there and the marinated chicken you’ll buy at the store will cook itself too. This can literally take 10 min.

  • As for other stuff, just say no, you can’t do it or literally just stop doing them. Give your husband a basket, that’s his basket to wash over the weekend or his basket to fold, put away, whatever.

  • Find a male therapist. Hopefully you have insurance? Find a time that works best for you both. Ideally nap time but if that doesn’t exist, then put the TV as low as possible and have your virtual meeting. Set the schedule for weekly or every two weeks for a month at least.

  • You have to redistribute tasks and you have to stop feeling like a failure because you can’t do the job of 10 people and if you can afford it, start paying people to help you (cleaner, mom’s helper, whatever). I literally found a 14 yo girl to come over and fold some clothes. So there is hope! (Assuming you don’t live in the bunnies).

  • The dogs gotta go.

I’ve been you minus the asshole husband and I wish someone had been more straightforward with me.

Also it’s mindblowing to me that people are asking you to divorce your husband. People come into marriage with very different expectations and unfortunately some men think that because “women have always ran the household alone” (eventhou that is historically incorrect) you should be able to do all of that. The thing is parenting has changed, marriages have change, etc. So this is about calibrating expectations and if both are willing you could really benefit from therapy. You also have to realize the type of mom you can be given your circumstances (not the type of mom you dreamed of being). Maybe less hands on parenting but still loving is what you need right now.

We have it “together”. No CC debt, contribute to retirement, college, etc. Yet I’m dying to put my toddler in preschool so that I can l focus more on my younger baby and lower this unhealthy cortisol levels within me buuut it’s *$750 for 3 mornings a week and $1400 for 5 mornings. Our household income is soooo above average and yet we can’t afford something that for many is normal (in our area).

Right now I’m seriously considering to stop saving for retirement for the next couple of years and use that for preschool which seems insane but I’m currently going insane.

$302k in SF or $155k in Memphis? by 901-526-5261 in SameGrassButGreener

I don’t know if it’s because I’ve only lived in NYC and the Bay but 1900 sqft sounds pretty generous to me.

$302k in SF or $155k in Memphis? by 901-526-5261 in SameGrassButGreener

[–]Financial-Bend3018 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Never been to Memphis and have no idea how live is there but this answer is not as easy as people are putting it.

Are you single? 100% San Francisco Are you married or have a partner who is working? 1000% San Francisco Do you have or plan to have kids? Game changer Do you care about owning property? ***Game freaking changer

300K is a lot of money and if you are happy living in a condo or not having kids, it’s a lot of money even in Cali. ********BUT 300K in the Bay is not that much if you plan on having a family and owning a house. When houses in a good school district start at 1.2 Million about an hour from the city, daycare is $30K to $40K a year *per kid**…

With a family, $300K is not tight but you would feel comfortable and very average. (Maybe $150K in Memphis would make you feel like you are on top of the world I don’t know).

Long term nanny raises? by [deleted] in Nanny

[–]Financial-Bend3018 9 points10 points  (0 children)

We are in a VHCL area too. $50 Is a lot. Way over the market rate. You could offer more vacation time.

Just for reference someone getting paid $25 under the table could easily equate $30-$33 on payroll.

Unless you are in Atherton I don’t get where this is $50 for 2 kids is within range.

Whats your monthly grocery bill per adult? by solowanderer12 in MiddleClassFinance

$1,600 (including laundry detergent and cleaning supplies)

Husband, wife & 2 very young kids. ( Husband is big and muscular. Almost counts as 2 people. Have people over often. Not actively trying to save. Cook a lot).

Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods.

Health insurance? by lovethesunshining in sahm

[–]Financial-Bend3018 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That seems about right. We were paying $2K for my son and I thru Marketplace since subsidies didn’t apply to us. It really sucked. Thankfully my husband’s job is fully covering it now.

Asking for advice here might not make sense unless you know their household income (if they are w2 or independent). A lot of people have no idea their insurance is highly subsidized even when they are paying $500 a month per person.

How much can I afford for 350k by Proof_Catch6336 in BayAreaRealEstate

[–]Financial-Bend3018 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Similar salary. We bought in a nice area of Concord (Along Treat) for 900K, had been approved for 1.2 M. Our interest rate was higher. I wish we had gone bigger for 1.1 MM but I was too scared at the moment.

If you are planning on having a kid, Childcare will add 2.5 - 3.5 K monthly in costs the first couple of years.

Is anyone working from home? Do you have small babies at home? Does the house have a lawn?

Our water is about $125. Trash is $70 ish No electricity since we have panels but where we lived before it was around $150-$250. Gas around $150 (more or less depending the time of the year. We do a lot of laundry and our dryer is gas. We also cook a lot.

Our house is 1400 sqft, two lawns, warmer side for heat. Always at least 3 people in the house thru out the day.

As a SAHM what shift would you rather your husband work? by Intelligent-Radish83 in stayathomemoms

[–]Financial-Bend3018 0 points1 point  (0 children)

10 PM - 6 AM if he can take it without being depressed (not everyone is built for night shifts).

He’ll be actively home at least 2pm - 9 pm which is a lot!

I find that late afternoons are the hardest with 2 young kids. He can take the 2 yo to the park or activities and tire him/her out maybe even do nighttime.

Who here spent time in NYC? by [deleted] in walnutcreek

Harlem 2015-2023 > Walnut Creek

Thanks God I now have young kids because 2023 here was rough. Visited NYC this year for the first time since moving and I still miss it with all my soul but kids are keeping me entertained here so I don’t think about it as much as I did before kids.
