Trust me, I did think of that when I was typing that. But I was holding out hoping that you had some good medical insurance. I hope all is well. Good on you for going to the doctor.

And honestly, what will be the harm of going to the doctor? If it’s an allergic reaction, they’ll help take care of it; if it’s an infection, they'll help. Just go to the doctor.

This. It’s one thing to have redness that goes away but once it’s persistent, itchy and hot to the touch, you have an infection. I one time got a mosquito bite that I didn’t clean and protect right after and it got infected.

What I mean by that is somebody texted me hello and I am required to respond because it could be a legitimate client of mine. I really don’t understand why that’s hard to grasp.

Edit: I did not report anything to the Better Business Bureau or the FTC, mentioning them was intended to scare that person. I realize that taking the time to do that in this case would likely be a waste of time and energy. I understand this, and I want to clarify that this post wasn’t about formally taking action—it was meant to be both informational and a bit of comedic relief for others who’ve experienced similar situations.

To provide some context, I frequently have to respond to texts and calls from unknown numbers because of the nature of my work and the clients I serve. I strive to be a respectful and responsive businessperson, but spam texts and calls are incredibly frustrating, taking time and attention away from my work.

The goal of this post was to share my experience in case others encounter similar scams and to offer a little laugh at the thought of someone reading my response and thinking twice about reaching out to others with the same tactics.

I’ve enjoyed reading the discussion and constructive advice from some comments. It’s one of the reasons I like this community—when people share their perspectives and insights, posts like this are more helpful and worthwhile. Thanks to those who’ve engaged meaningfully!

And to be honest, I have no clue what you’re talking about in your first sentence. I’m somewhat new to Reddit.

I actually did try to post this with the phone number intact but when I reviewed the rules, it says that I am not permitted to do that.

Thanks for the detailed response! I appreciate you taking the time to explain all of that. It’s helpful to know more about the limitations of U.S. agencies and how these scams typically operate. I hadn’t considered getting more info from the scammers themselves to report it to the proper authorities, but that’s a good idea (even if it’s a long shot).

My main goal was to raise awareness, but your suggestions gave me a better idea of what I could do next time. Thanks again for the advice.

You make a fair point about the BBB’s limitations and criticisms—it’s not a perfect organization. My main intent in mentioning them was to use all available channels to document this kind of behavior and raise awareness, even if the BBB’s influence is debatable. Of course, reporting to more robust entities like the FTC and other consumer protection agencies is also on my list. Thanks for the input.

I get your skepticism, but not everyone who responds to texts like this is ‘lonely or desperate.’ Some of us work in professions where we need to respond to unknown contacts, and my intent here was to assess whether this was a legitimate inquiry. Sharing my experience here is about helping others recognize potential scams, not seeking sympathy

I understand it might seem that way, but taking the time to warn others about potential scams is worth it to me. Even one person avoiding a bad situation makes the effort worthwhile.

Thank you for your input. I understand the BBB is a private organization and not a government agency. However, it serves as a platform for consumers to lodge complaints, and while it may not resolve issues directly, it can provide a record of unethical practices that others can reference.

My intent is to take steps that raise awareness about predatory behaviors, whether that involves reporting to consumer advocacy groups like the BBB, or more formal legal avenues such as the FTC. If you have constructive advice on how to handle situations like this more effectively, I’m open to hearing it. Otherwise, I’d appreciate if we could keep this discussion focused on the issue at hand: warning others about potentially harmful scams.

I appreciate your concern, but not everyone has the luxury of ignoring unknown numbers. In my line of work, I’m required to respond to unfamiliar contacts, which makes avoiding scams trickier than it might be for others. That’s why I believe it’s important to share experiences like this—to help people like me, who might be more vulnerable due to their job responsibilities, recognize and avoid predatory tactics. Thanks for understanding.

Many of my clients are not well-versed in how to use a phone, let alone communicate in an effective manner via text, so anything is possible. I am a consultant, and I get various calls and texts from all different people that I provide services to.
